Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

What did Bruce do? Again, he's a people user to the hulk and is trying to gaslight him to make him think it's anything approaching a fair share.
Second Helen Cho reference in a couple of pages. I think we might care more about her now than the MCU does.
I'd previously wrongly "corrected" someone, as I thought Quill's response to Stark saying "You're from Earth" was "Yeah I'm from Earth, I'm from Missouri", not "No I'm not from Earth, I'm from Missouri." To which Stark responded "That's on Earth, dipshit!"
Either way that scene is read, it makes no sense for one of the characters, and just does what was mentioned last page, has someone look like a dumbass to establish someone else as "better". And earlier in the film they suggested Quill was "almost fat", to do the same thing when it came to looks, to Thor.
I did like Quill's later response: "the half of me that's stupid? That's 100% of [Stark and Parker]." Because he's actually right, and he's owning up to being half Celestial, and they (Stark) could use being taken down a peg.

I've got no problems with the Shuri scene. Shuri's supposed to be the smartest person on the planet; this is the first chance they've ever had to show how she actually stacks up to the franchise's other geniuses, rather than just mentioning it in interviews.
She doesn't just mentally pwn Bruce in that scene. Vision was Bruce and Tony's project. She's mentally pwning both of them by calling out their design.
Should she be smarter than them? Abso-f*cking-lutely. The whole idea of Wakanda is that it's a secret kingdom of wealth and privilege that makes the rest of the world look like dim-witted primates by comparison. Compare the greatest mind of 2099 to the greatest mind of 20,000 BC; both will be leagues ahead of their peers, but there's just no competition between the two individuals.
Science is about standing on the shoulders of those who came before you. The shoulders under Shuri's feet are significantly higher than those under Bruce and Tony's. It's only natural that she makes them look like idiots.
And you know what? Let her have this. Because fictional black women don't get to make fictional white men look like idiots in scientific fields very often.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Is the whole shit with Vision even in Bruce’s scientific domain?
I mean sure he’s super smart but he’s did focus primarily on a specific field.
It’s sorta like a tank engineer calling a car engineer stupid for not being able to get a tank at first.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Tony considered Vision's body to be Bruce's domain when he begged for him to work on it. Said Bruce was the better biologist than him, since Tony specializes in robotics.
Tony: No, of course not. I want to help you put JARVIS in this thing. We're out of my field here. You know bio-organics better than anyone.

Huh. When you bring up that last part, I'm more ok with it.
Still would have preferred she do it to Tony's face rather than indirectly via just mouthing off the job he and Bruce did (because Bruce is a lot less arrogant).
But yeah, when I look at it that way it more that I just mostly wish Tony got mouthed off instead.
One Strip! One Strip!Honestly, I'd say that Tony's nanite armor in Infinity War is at least as impressive as T-Challa's nanite suit in Black Panther. Granted, Infinity War is two years after Black Panther, so Tony had plenty of time to research, and he was talking about it like it was a recent development, but it seems Tony is only a couple of years behind Shuri.
Then again, it's possible Tony copied the idea from the Black Panther costume, which means that Wakanda going public actually did help push the world forward technologically like T-Challa hoped it would.

I still would like it if the MCU were a little bit more specific about the specialities of the various scientists. If for no other reason that I feel it would be an important point to make that not one person alone can really know everything and how important corporations between experts from all over the world really is.
But yes, it makes sense that Shuri is the Vibranium expert.

Shuri can't call out Tony's subpar design to his face if he's not there.
Black Panther specifically discussed that the rest of the world was catching up to Wakanda.
I would honestly love for there to be a scene where Shuri is breaking down design to Rocket, and even her meeting him at his level is still flying above the head of Stark (and Pym and Banner, I guess) in the background.
There's been more movies lately willing to play with scientific specialization and less use of Omnidisciplinary Scientist. Part of this comes down to the creation of the "Hollywood Science Hotline". The making of Thor is discussed in this video.

Isn't the favourite thing the fandom likes to do with Shuri to pair her up with Peter so that they can annoy the hell out of Tony together?
