Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

If the Four get a movie, it should be dedicated to building the universe and expanding the franchise's horizons. That's really what they're best at.

Actually, the FF have been called "Marvel's First Family," with a heavy emphasis on the family part.

I’m well aware of what they’re called. Them being the first family of superheroes doesn’t mean that their franchise isn’t foremost a super-exploration adventure first, and a family drama second.

I'd say it's the other way around.

It's both, Lost In Space style. Family drama WHILE exploring strange new worlds.

Watching Infinity War for the millionth time (Peter Quill sucks!), and it occurs to me that the thing with Shuri talking down to Bruce, while kinda funny, also seems mean because he deserves it far less than Tony does.

Not only that, but there actually is a good reason they didn't do that thing he suggested:

They were under pressure (not only to create it in time to save Widow, but also due to Cap arriving with Wanda and Pietro and a fight breaking out). He didn't have to suddenly be silent and like uh...I don't know.

So yeah, wrong guy to do that joke on. Still funny.

That's the Hank Pym Effect (named for comic book Hank) in action: for someone to be a genius in fiction, typically someone else has to be an idiot in comparison. Even if that other person is, themselves, a genius.

Shuri was able to figure out a better way under the same circumstances as Stark and Banner, without already having the idea behind Ultron.

Quill costing them the win on Titan is kind of overly hard on him. They all kinda dropped the ball in some way. Except for Strange, and to a lesser extent, Peter.

I wish we saw Mantis actually knowing how to fight hand to hand.

Not exactly.

Shuri's enough of a genius that she was able to figure things out after looking at him, but she had the finished product in front of her.

Though I guess it's unfair to say she wasn't on the clock (since she was), but up until the battle of Wakanda began, it was much bigger.

I should get around to watching Ant-Man and the Wasp again since I have it physically now. Probably gonna stop before the mid-credits scene though lmao

Always thought the scene with Shuri was an unnecessary bit of Character Shilling: we already know Shuri is a really smart cookie, there's no need to make poor Bruce look like an idiot just to prove it again.

A friend of mine argued that the scene was needed to establish Shuri's TV Genius credentials to people who haven't watched Black Panther (which is most of China, granted), but I say that anyone who hasn't figured that out when the rest of the cast clearly puts their trust in her to take out the stone from Vision, is really dumb and has only themselves to blame.

I dislike it when writers do that in-general, be it in comics, films, TV, or whatever. Like there's an issue of, I think that it was Mighty Avengers, where Hank Pym is talking to Reed Richards and they're bickering. And Reed basically says that HE discovered the Pym Particle thing before Hank did.

And I hate it when they do that. That's Hank's thing, don't have another character swoop in and take it from him just for a cheap argument scene.

And I don't like seeing supposedly smart characters made to look dumb just to prop up another smart character. Let them exist on their own without that nonsense.

And when writers call Shuri "the smartest person on the plant" or something, there's no need to go that far. I mean they didn't shill Tony, or Howard Stark, or Banner, or Pym, or Helen Cho, etc like that.

Reed didn't claim he discovered them first, he claimed that he knows more about them than Hank does. Still a dick move though.

Sure everyone ranks on Quill for losing his temper, but nobody faults Thor for not going "for the head".

Thof had good reason to assume hitting Thanos' chest would work fine. Quill knew exactly what would happen if he interrupted Mantis but he didn't care.

Speaking of Peter, I'm still disappointed there wasn't a joke like Tony saying 'Peter!', and then both Parker and Quill say "What?" in unison.

[up][up][up]

Just for the record, I've made it clear I do understand this. Quill was overcome with rage, and had he been calmed down before hand, he'd have realized what a bad idea the thing he was about to do was.

I just don't care. He did it, and that's too much to ignore.

Remember, I've fully admitted that I'm not really being fair to him. Nor do I have any desire to.

Shuri mentally pwning Banner had been a meme everyone kept demanding to be in the film just as they did with Rocket asking about Bucky's arm or Thor and Cap comparing beards or Thor and the Guardians comparing awful family.

Really?

Why Banner? Tony would be a much better choice. What did Bruce do to deserve something like that?

Nobody was asking for Thor and Cap to compare beards (nobody knew Cap even had a beard until the first trailer), just as nobody was asking Shuri to mentally pwn anyone aside from Tony. People were asking for Rocket to steal Bucky's arm, but that was just because we've seen before how Rocket thinks that's funny and, well, it was funny.
