Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Bill Maher has always been garbage, though. Islamophobic, racist, sexist, trash. Just cause he hates Trump doesn’t make him good.

I guess so.

I didn't even know about that other stuff.

...but it's...well it's Trump. The guy's such a cartoonish Super-Villain that I just assumed anyone who hated or opposed him was a good guy by default.

I suppose that's an easy mistake to make.

On the contrary, the guy's such a cartoonish supervillain that opposing him is literally the lowest possible bar of good. It's a bar that's on the ground. A child could walk over it. Therefore it doesn't mean "automatically trustworthy in everything".

Yeah, the more one looks at Maher and his history the more one has to wonder why anyone is a fan of him. The guy's an ass and he's got some frankly messed up ideas about how medical science works. He's flirted with germ theory denialism and vaccine denialism in the past.

I'll refrain from saying anything else about Maher because, frankly, I have not the slightest clue about his work, and the fact that I learned of his existence thanks to his comments about Stan Lee's death certainly don't make me particularly interested in learning more.

So to switch gears: with his primary weapon on the hands of someone else, would it still be worthwhile to put Beta Ray Bill in the MCU, or should we just skip straight to giving Valkyrie the protagonist role?

[up]So does the fact that said man's hedonistic lifestyle is utterly hollow and the movie is all about him becoming a decent human being capable of taking responsibility for his actions is worth nothing, then?

That's like blaming The Matrix and Fight Club for the existence of Red Pills, you can't blame a director if his work happens to be watched by a large number of morons.

MCU Stormbreaker is a completely different beast compared to comics Stormbreaker. Comics Stormbreaker is practically a carbon copy of Mjolnir, right down to being unable to be lifted by unworthy people. And yes, there was a storyline revolving around Bill being found unworthy by Stormbreaker.

MCU Stormbreaker has more in common with Jarnbjorn.

He did change from his initial brazen, womanizing perspective, but I guess Galadriel was simply highlighting that he had that perspective at the start.

All the characteristics I mentioned were part of Stark in all the movies where he appeared, not just in the first Iron Man, with the exception of disrespect for women (I only remember that being present in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and Age of Ultron). It’s not difficult to see that people who find him appealing might be drawn to the same brash, ostentatious, self-aggrandizing attitudes in Trump.

Yeah, how exactly a character be put through a redemption arc if he has nothing to redeem himself in the first place?

I love Steve an' all, but I don't want to live in a world where that is the only acceptable kind of hero one can have. Stuff like Berserk and God of Boy would never exist if that were to be the case.

[up][up][up]"Stormbreaker" is cool, but gotta agree with Rocket, it is a bit much.

BTW, I actually forgot someone: what about Thunderstrike? Should he be introduced (in a very modified manner, obviously)?

Ultimate comics? What's that? Oddly, despite not having any memories of it, the name inspires a sudden surge of white hot rage within me. Should probably mention this to my therapist.

And isn't Throg just Thor turned into a frog?

I was going to just post in this thread that I did a decidedly silly thing and some people may like if they're also fans of Super Smash Bros, but...

Then I saw the page topper. And I felt at home, as a human rights advocate comic fan who dislikes that hypocritical bigot. Some of you here who know my career and political leanings may be surprised by that, but don't be. Bill Maher sucks.

...aaaaanywho, I assume some here have thought about who they'd want to see in the MCU (that's feasible)? For me, it's:

  • The Ultimates (2015)
    • Monica Rambeau (likely to appear, as her mother will be in Captain Marvel)
    • Blue Marvel (both his backstory arc and his learning to forgive the Anti-Man arc)
    • America Chavez (maybe followed by a TV spinoff?)
  • Kamala Khan (likely also in the above spinoff)
  • She-Hulk online series
  • Amadeus Cho (tied to Hulk's story, and hell, just make Cho become "Hercules")
  • Nova (Richard Rider)
  • Blade (Blade 1 and 2 could EASILY be retconned in. He was the first successful Marvel superhero film)

I could see Feige planning a phase around both the "Eternity War" and "Annihilation" storylines.

Well, as I may have implied before, I really want Ironheart because I think the character has tons of potential but the writing very much does not do it justice.

I also really want the Silver Surfer and Madame Web to show up.

As for your picks: I want Blade but only if he's British; don't know much about Nova so I'll pass; yes to Monica, Blue Marvel and Kamala; a big "eeehhhhhh" to America.

I can't quite put my finger on why, but the character really gets on my nerves.

Edit: Good Lord, can't believe I forgot Amadeus and Herc, Marvel's best comedy duo!

[up][up]Honestly, Carol really gets on my nerves. I hadn't been reading comics for a while, so Ultimates was my first exposure to both her and America's personalities, and by the end of it I started to wonder how anyone could work with, or enjoy reading, Carol Danvers. Hell, even she realized she sucks partway through, and got better by the end.
Madame Web would be interesting! (was she in Spider-Verse? I haven't seen it) She doesn't have as much "done to death" as Norman Osborn or Victor von Doom do at this point. Galactus is possibly salvageable in that same way. But personally, I'm staying away from Spider-Man characters, including the Spider-Women, as I'm really tired of Spider-Man stories right now. 7 movies across 4 continuities, since 2002, is saturation.

[up]I think unless there's time travel involved, we're probably not gonna get Bill, after Ragnarok.

I might be rambling now, but one more (rational) thought before I call it a night.

Stark and Trump's common trait is their bluster, and I think this is what draws some people to their personalities. A problem is that sometimes people don't look beyond that bluster.
Stark's quippiest lines "genius billionaire..." and "Squidward" are immediately deflated in the context of the scenes - Cap calls him out on his self-serving morality, which Stark then learns from. Ebony Maw ignores the (nonsensical, honestly "Voldemort" would've made more sense) insult and hands Stark his ass - he does zero damage that entire fight. Stark then stops trying to act cool for the rest of the movie, in favor of actually being effective. When you look past the bluster, Stark actually has virtues, and learns from his flaws.
Trump on the other hand... if you look past the bluster, empty promises, proven lies, etc., you see someone who is doing solely self-serving bets, using his name, his perceived but not proven wealth, the (constantly declining) institutional strength of the United States, and fear and hatred of the "other", as currency.
But unfortunately, some people don't look past the bravado, and are content with whatever narrative makes them feel good, whether or not it's applicable. (this isn't to say anyone here is doing that)

Well, her fans like to downplay it, but the truth is that Carol is Tony Stark's biggest rival when it comes to oversized ego.

What [up][up] said. I meant the Ultimates (2015) team, set in 616, which consists of Carol Danvers, T'Challa, Adam Brashear, Monica Rambeau, and America Chavez. Their purpose was to (non-violently, if possible) solve some of the mysteries of the universe before they became problems on Earth.

Then you have "Eternity Watch" a different team with the same final mission as the Ultimates (2015), named by and including Galactus, and was made up of "allies" from the Ultimates' earlier missions. And Ego the Living Planet.

Then you have the "Ultimate Ultimates": all the incarnations of the Multiverse. Effectively the same final mission as the above two.

The Ultimates universe did indeed include a team named "The Ultimates", their version of the Avengers. Though they do show up in the 616 Eternity War storyline, because Reed Richards Is Useless, and are now technically a part of the 616 universe. Minus the one that got killed.

As of the conclusion of the Eternity War storyline, there's only one team now known as the Ultimates: and it's the one from the Ultimate Marvel universe.

So yeah, that naming got complicated.
