Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Brandon, hopefully this discussion answered your question.

Moving on to positive things- god, Black Panther is so goddamn good. Soundtrack came up on shuffle, and my god, it kills.

One of my favorite African artists - Baaba Maal - contributed to the main Wakanda theme. I just about had a happiness overload when I found that out.

Now, Ironman 2....

I actually like how they introduced Black Widow. Her assessing Tony made so much sense and for someone like me, who went into the movie blind, the question what is up with this new PA was genuinely intriguing. Plus, she got the original hallway fight, and it is awesome.

Love the Ironsuit-case

Love the scene when Tony watches the old reels of his father. And that they got the Sherman brother's to do a melody for the expo.

Speaking of which, everything related to it is pretty awesome, too.

And call me crazy, but Justin Hammer is entertaining. He is not a good villain, but as a character, I actually want to see him back at one point.

All the Stars is such an absolute b o p and goes nicely with what's already one of the best credits sequences in the franchise.

Ooooh, I forgot how pretty the credits were!

If I weren’t going to see Into the Spider-Verse tomorrow I’d totally rewatch Black Panther. Just talking about it makes me wanna watch it [lol]

[up][up] I am partial to the The First Avenger one, because of the art-style. And the Black Panther one, for similar reasons.

[up][up][up]No, go see Into the Spider-Verse. It's awesome. I'd actually mark it above even Black Panther.

Damn Ninjas.

I actually enjoy the Ant-Man and the Wasp end credits scene.

Black Panther is probably my favorite MCU credits sequence with Winter Soldier as a distant second.

And yes Into the Spider-Verse is freaking phenomenal.

Sorry to bring it back to this, but I'm gonna try and decipher what Whedon's talking about here:

Joss: I love it because it means young (often too young) and sexual (or sexually attractive), but as a kid I found a definition from 1900 which defined it as "of marriageable age." So it's awful sort of double! English language, keepin' it creepy.

Obviously, right off the bat, the order of the sentence is awkward and confusing, he starts off saying "I love it" in response to a Tweet talking about a word they hate, but it's clear from the rest of the tweet that he's actually saying "I love how bad it is".

I think what he's trying to say here is "I love how awful the word 'nubile' is, because as a kid, I found an old definition from 1900 which defined it as "of marriageable age", which is the exact opposite of the definition we commonly know nowadays, which is young (often too young) and sexual. The fact that this word can mean two completely opposite things makes it easily twice as awful as previously thought. The English language is creepy."

Sorry for opening this can of worms. The previous discussing of the rape "joke" from AOU lead me to asking that. :(

SV gels with me just a liiiittle bit more, though this does warrant re-evaluating as time passes and it comes out on DVD and the like. Both movies have their own strengths and stand alone surprisingly well for me. Well, as much as they can with the characters and franchises they have to work with, anyway.

Sorry for opening this can of worms. The previous discussing of the rape "joke" from AOU lead me to asking that. :(

Welcome to rape culture. Ultimately, debating whose fault the prima nocta joke really is, is a distraction from the overarching point. Because the answer is everyone. It's everyone's fault.

It's the fault of a writer (whether the scriptwriter or Downey's ad-lib) for making that joke.

It's the fault of the actor for not objecting to the joke.

It's the fault of the director for keeping the take with that joke.

It's the fault of the editor for not cutting the joke.

It's the fault of the producers for signing off on a final version that has that joke.

This isn't, like, something someone snapped off in the middle of a press conference and then it was too late to unsay it. A lot of signatures went on that joke in order to deliver it in the final published form of the film. Trying to pinpoint who came up with the joke is splitting hairs; what's more important is that nobody, at any step of the filmmaking process, objected to Tony Stark being an aspiring rapist.

And that is the problem with society today.

Now Thor...I actually really, really dig everything related to Loki. The new backstory they created for him is just so much more interesting than what most villains have. And I love the Shakespearean touches - especially the sense when Loki confronts Odin (shout our for the set designers, too).

I also love the twist in the end when Loki kills Laufey. Didn't see that coming. And the suicide. Such a dramatic moment.

Oh, and Clint's line make me laugh. (fun fact: I didn't even realize that he was supposed to be another hero character).

[up] For as much flack as these films get for not giving Clint/Hawkeye much attention, one of my fav line exchanges from the 1st Avengers film involves him.

Thor: "I have unfinished business with Loki!"

Hawkeye: "Yeah, get in line..."

Well, I just saw Winter Soldier....and yep, it still remins my favorite Marvel movie to date, I only have some issues like living Nick fury alive(I feel he dosent have anything els eto do a this point) and Natasha "you are not going to arrest us" which aside of blatanly un democratic and arrogant of her part is funny because THAT is exactly what would end happen anyway, which make her look like short sight fool.

Also her no selling the electric trap of Pierce, like....what? that thing were suposed to KILL people, how? just.....HOW?.

And The Winter Soldier kept being one of my favorite villian, what a glorious killing machine.

Not sure what you mean. Pierce never gets to activate his trap card on Black Widow, she shorted it out with her shock doohickey.

The electric trap was just turned off in the nick of time before it would have killed her, is my recollection. Not really no-sold by Nat.

[up][up]Now I imagine that Capitan plan to defeat Thannos is gambling the fate of the galaxy on a children card game.

[up]No, Nat take the shock of the electric trap and Nick shoot Pierce, then Nick go to see her and she....is just find with a headache, the same trap kill the other members of Shield so she just sort of....shurgged off.

Yeah, because it was shut off just in time. The World Security Council died in agony, but it did take a few seconds. The impression I got at the time was that it was, like, burning down into their chest, so someone could have had a very brief window to stop it from happening.

Actually I'm pretty sure that the electric trap was hers (she used something similar to briefly disable Bucky's metal arm early on in the film). And Pierce's trap was basically, burning a hole through people's chest. So she disabled it by shocking herself long enough for Nick to shoot Pierce.

BTW I will never get tired of seeing Robert freaking Redford say "Hail HYDRA." That's just great, and even The Russo's admit that they weren't sure if he'd do it and were pleased that he did.

She shocked herself with her wrist zap thingies to short out the Evil Security Clearance Badge of Doom. As soon as she drops like a sack of bricks (from her own weapon) Pierce realizes something's fishy and tries to activate his trap, but it has to reboot. During which time Fury unleashes his fury.

That's explicitly what happened. Pierce never even got a chance to activate it on Romanov.

Since they're doing a Black Widow solo movie, what do you suppose will be their explanation for why she doesn't use the face changing technology from The Winter Soldier, like, all the time?
