Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I liked the performance of whoever played M'Baku (hopefully I don't confuse the name here) even better. He dominated every scene he was in, despite someone dressed up like a Gorilla should be stupid. But he managed to sell it as absolutely badass.

[up][up] Man that's sad cause seriously making a nonhuman character feel so human is certainly an achievement.

Its like Serkis' performance as Caesar from the Planet of the Apes trilogy.

That'd be Winston Duke as M'Baku. And yes, he is delightful.

M’baku’s actor is Winston Duke.

Serkis not getting a nomination for Ceasar is one of the biggest injustices in to world of cinema.

Or Gollum. But I guess I see the point...the acting is only half of the recipe, the animation is the second part.

Maybe there should be an award for best Motion capture acting, with the actor AND the animation team getting honoured. But there are only so many movies per year which feature one.

Best animated character? Covers mo-cap actors as well as all characters in animated films.

Danai Gurira also deserves a best supporting nomination. She was dynamite as Okoye. Really tremendous performance.

Winston Duke definitely deserves an award for playing a Scary Black Man who hoots like a gorilla and is literally called "the Man-Ape" in the comics, and making the audience go "THIS GUY IS AWESOME AND THE BEST CHARACTER EVER" instead of just coming across like a super-racist caricature.

Danai Gurira also deserves a best supporting nomination. She was dynamite as Okoye. Really tremendous performance.

I also agree with this. In terms of the narrative, Okoye was basically a Mook. Her job was to be a Warrior Woman in a group of Warrior Women who had a name and a face so that the film could develop the mooks' identity. But her performance went far above and beyond the call of duty for a role that, by all rights, could have just been a Mauve Shirt, making her scenes into some of the most memorable parts of the entire film.

It's hard to describe exactly why but I was glued to the screen whenever Okoye was doing anything, even though what she was doing wasn't always narratively remarkable. Gurira had an amazing performance.

From the Hollywood Reporter:

Would you consider reviving the Marvel shows that Netflix canceled?

They are very high-quality shows. We haven't yet discussed that, but I would say that's a possibility.

I mean, what are they going to do, say no?

@Life being tough for mocap: I still remember the debacle of Tintin not getting nominated for an animated Oscar because it was mocap, but not getting nominated for a live action Oscar because it was animated.

Well, mocap isn't animation. And apparently we have decided that even heavily CGI animated movies are live action if they just look realistic enough…

Frankly, the line between live-action and animation has blurred since Tron.

With the way video-game graphics are advancing, they’ll be playable live-action movies in no time.

There are live-action video games. They're mostly restricted to visual novels with limited choices, but they totally exist.

Frankly, the line between live-action and animation has blurred since Tron.

And is set to keep burring with debates over the new "live-action" Lion King.

Which isn't live-action, for the record. Photo-realistic animation is still animation.

No one involved in the making of the film has called it live-action.

This forum moves quickly.

I think we definitely need to have a mocap award... And then retroactively give like five of them to Andy Serkis.

And Winston Duke is charismatic as hell.

Also, I second that The Return of the King is a masterpiece.
