Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Just because Bast would exist doesn't mean Moon Knight really is talking to Egyptian gods.
Let's say I said I was friends with Will Smith. Will Smith is a person that actually exists but that doesn't prove I am actually friends with him.
Even in a fantasy universe, seeing is believing.

I'd like to see a multiracial character, raised Jewish but coming to grips with other aspects of his heritage, possibly Egyptian Arabic and Muslim, but also black, white, and American — someone who can't be easily sorted using that as yardstick. That might not be a huge part of Moon Knight now, but given that the character is all about taking on other identities, wrestling with mental illness, I think there's a pretty powerful metaphor there. Khonshu is just one more voice from the past, pulling Marc Spector in yet another direction.
I'd like it established, to the audience at least and maybe at least one Secret-Keeper for the character, that Khonshu is in fact real, even if others wonder. But just because he's a god doesn't mean he's any more of an authority on mental illness than anyone else, so the real source of Moon Knight's strength is still Moon Knight himself.
For a little bit historic background: The Ptolemaic dynasty was the result of Alexander the Greats attempt to rule the world. Basically one of his generals took over Egypt and reigned there after Alexander died pretty young. And then the family proceeded to marry among itself because they saw themselves above the people they reigned over. You know, being cultivated Greeks/Macedonians and all. Cleopatra was the last daughter of this dynasty unless you go all "well, the child of her and Cesar survived somehow" which opens the next can of worms.
So...yeah, bad idea. And I frankly don't think that a direct blood line is even necessary.
One of the reasons why I vote for a character with a mixed cultural heritage is because that would represent Egypt itself. I mean, this country has changed its main religion more often than any other. In a way it was one of the first leaning towards monotheism, before adopting Christianity for a period and nowadays Islam is the most predominant religion. Plus, Judaism has its own sad history with Egypt, a lot of it fairly recent. Moon Knight's parents could have been between those who were pushed out of Egypt.
But then I somehow doubt that they would delve that deep into religious conflict, so maybe it would be better not to touch it at all....

Personally, from what little I've read of the Moon Knight, he's a great character, similar enough to Batman to fill the same niche, while being distinct enough that he's able to stand on his own.
Plus he's Crazy Awesome incarnate, and pretty much the only worthwhile thing from the Shadowland crossover.
Besides, with Daredevil cancelled and The Punisher ruined, we need another gritty, street-level Anti-Hero to fill the gap.

That's firmly inside Fanon Discontinuity for me, and no one will ever convince me otherwise.
I don't see what would be so impossible about making Moon Knight a Jewish Egyptian-American person. There are still Jews in Egypt to this day (even if their population is rapidly dwindling), after all.
I'm not too sure what gives you that impression.

"All you Fascists bound to lose."Yeah, and as long as all that is preserved, anything added can make for a better story.
It can also make for a worse story, of course, which is statistically far more likely, but there you have it.
@Very Melon Well honestly I don't really want him to join the MCU. There are a great many characters who would be far more interesting, imO.
Certified: 48.0% West Asian, 6.5% South Asian, 15.8% North/West European, 15.7% English, 7.4% Balkan, 6.6% ScandinavianBy that token, Marvel shouldn't do a series with female or minority leads because they have a history of treating them disrespectfully.
I fail to see how the answer to that problem is to never depict mental illness at all.
If they do it badly, slam it with bad reviews, and so on until someone gets it right.

I didn’t say never do it. I simply said I have my doubts that they are able to pull it off with respect as of current.
If they hire more writers with experience at truthfully portraying mental disability, in comics and in film, my confidence will significantly increase.

The showrunner for Iron Fist Season 2, by the way, was M. Raven Metzner

Raphael Bob-Waksberg, creator of the popular BoJack Horseman show, has ADHD. Best one I can think of.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."

The ptolemaics were mostly apathetic to the egyptians and there culture as a whole so...no its not a good idea.
