Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up] Well of course, but I'm thinking after that.

I think we are looking at a timeskip anywhere from 6 months to a couple years. Enough time for Hawkeye to go down what looks like a dark path and for Cap to be in total disbelief when Scott Lang finally shows up (instead of "oh, I guess he's still alive").

I did find it hilarious that they worked in an appearance of sorts from Peggy in the trailer before actually doing anything with Sharon.

Rocket is now naked and mute and living among his brethren eating trash.

Portrayed by Bradley Cooper.

I think they quite deliberately referenced back to Steve's and Tony's first movie...Steve is staring at Peggy again, Tony is again trapped in a place with a bunch of scraps.

I actually wonder if they'll do something with Rocket learning about actual raccoons and having some sort of identity crisis. A recurring trait with Rocket is that he hates being treated as an inferior being or a dumb animal. So, coming across an entire species that looks exactly like him, but spends most of its life eating garbage for a living... I feel that would give him some serious issues. Combined with losing all of his friends in a single moment, I don't think Rocket would handle that very well.

I always hoped that they would explore that in Got G Vol 3.

There's an issue of Guardians where he comes to Earth and sees a normal raccoon. He yells and it, telling it to put on some pants.

[up] That certainly seems on-brand.

Alternatively, they just haven't bothered to finish any of the CGI for Rocket yet. As much as I love creepy, blocky, half-rendered 3D models, I don't think they'd go over well in the trailer. That probably isn't it, because they have oodles of money to work with, but it lets me take potshots at CGI.

I am pretty sure they aren't done with the CGI yet. Hence we barely see anything of Thanos either.

Ant Man was in EVERY CLIP! Did you see him?

(sorry, couldn't resist.)

It amuses me that Thor is still stuck with that hair cut. I think it's because a Stan Lee cameo had some kind of effect over multiple films, is why I find it so amusing.

So when do we start making jokes about Hawkeye's scenes getting cut from the final film?

Honestly, the true funny thing is how many reactors are excited to see him in the trailer. Guess you only realize what you had when it is suddenly missing for a whole Avengers movie.

[up][up]He got the sword they used to cut his scenes.

Now he'll cut everybody else scenes so the movie'll be all about him.

I personally love the idea that Rocket is curently TV famous, just doing interviews all the time about the universe and his opinions on Earth's culture.

If anything I'm glad they're letting Scott shine so much as of late. From the way he appeared it does seem as if Hawkeye's family got snopped, that or they were murdered at a later point in the ensuing chaos and he wants revenge on the people responsible. Either way, a bit too fridge-y for my taste.

[up][up][up]I really like Scott as well. I think the gag is he's a character a lot of people overlooked but now are rethinking because it looks like he has a pivotal role here.

The amount of people I saw today saying some variant of "Shit, I need to go watch Ant-Man and the Wasp!" was massive.
