Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Yeah, any time you have a non-white or non-male protagonist, those people will scream bloody murder. Their fragile snowflake egos can't handle it.

They say the same thing about black panther. oh afrofuturism,oh this oh the mcu has been infected by the SJW curse.

I remember seen a comment by a guy, that said that that the mcu is going SJW and that he's been calling this since Ant-man and the Wasp, was announced.

This paranoia is stupid

Pardon my French, but quality of entertainment is a one hundred percent subjective factor
I've seen so many people online say how The Last Jedi was "objectively terrible" that I don't think many people know what the word "objective" means.

As for Captain Marvel: yes, it will get targeted by the "anti-SJW" crowd, but Brie Larson has already shown herself to be quite the badass in real life as well, so I'm confident that neither she nor Marvel will give a shit about those types of fans. All that's left, really, is for the rest of fandom to ignore them, too.

Really because I had the opposite issue with The Last Jedi. I could identify that it was an objectively well-made film with potentially interesting themes, in fact moreso than The Force Awakens. I just wasn't all that entertained in spite of it.

So is Fury so paranoid because he’s spent the last 20+ years wondering who’s a shapeshifting alien.

Oh, man. How ironic would it be if the reason Hydra was able to slide in under his notice was because he had all his Paranoia Filters set to Skrull? So busy looking at the stars that he forgot to intensely scrutinize his human colleagues too.

[up]

I could 100% buy that.

If we take Agents of Shield into account (especially the first season where Fury actually appeared in a few eps) he was probably waiting for the Kree to return as well.

I just hope that they don't create a plot hole with Ao S and let Coulson in on the secret.

[up] I don't know if that would create a pothole or not — after all, we don't know when Coulson was put in charge of TAHITI. It's possible that, after learning about the Kree, Fury decided to put Coulson in charge of it.

We know Coulson was in this, and he was one of Nick's most trusted agents and friend.

I couldn't picture him not knowing about it.

...except if there is a plot twist and it turns out that Coulson was a Skrull all along. And he's the reason Fury lost his eye.

[up][up]NGL, revealing that Coulson has been a Skrull this entire time (like even in AoS) would be the second gutsiest twist they could do here. Only Nick Fury himself being one this whole time would beat it.

So of course it's not going to happen.

Coulson wasn't a Skrull, but he became a Skrull. Yeah, TAHITI is actually just a Skrull replacement program. All that "Kree blood resurrection" stuff is just a really morbid cover story. What better way to hide your alien secrets than putting them behind other alien secrets?

Oh, he knows. He's a deep-cover Skrull agent spying on the Kree by posing as a human ally for the Empire who spies on the Skrulls by posing as a deep-cover Skrull agent spying on the Kree.

His only true allegiance is to the Denny's Grand Slam breakfast platter. He has no pressing desire to ever leave a planet where that exists.

Nick Fury took out his own eye. Yes, that's right: he trusted himself and that was the wrong decision.

I just hope that they don't create a plot hole with Ao S and let Coulson in on the secret.

Coulson got his memories of TAHITI wiped when he became the first successful test subject. Presumably that included the details of the Kree.

He might still have remembered the Skrull invasion, but he didn't remember that blue aliens were distantly involved.

They could keep Shang-Chi being the son of a super-villain, but instead of Fu Manchu they can use the Mandarin which could finally bring back the whole real Mandarin biz teased all the back to that short years ago.

Marvel changed the name of his father years ago though.

They changed it to Zheng Zu and Fu Manchu was just an alias.that said, having Mandarin be his father would be a cool twist.

Anyway, isn't Shang-Chi some sort of secret agent?

A British secret agent, yeah. At least initially.

Kinda hope they stick to that, would be nice to have an MCU film set in Britain.

His father being the Mandarin would probably be the best bet at ever using that character for real, if at all. Since the whole reason for the changes in Iron Man 3 was a desire to not get the movie Banned in China, it's possible the Chinese censors would react more favorably to a Chinese villain if he's offset by multiple heroic depictions of Chinese characters in the same film, making it clear Marvel is not trying to vilify China.

The thing about "Captain Marvel acting blandly" is that it's so obvious that the twist of the film will be "the Kree, who brainwashed Carol into thinking they're heroes are actually the bad guys", but Marvel doesn't want to explicitly spell it out in the trailer, and I'm sure that most of her big acting moments in the film will be in response to learning that.

Like, I heard one person complaining that she "doesn't have anywhere to grow as a character" because she starts off as a hero.

To expand, it seems like a lot of people are taking this trailer at face value of "Kree good, Skrull bad, Captain Marvel has tragic amnesia backstory" when I'm like 95% sure the movie is actually going to be "Kree revealed to be bad, some Skrull bad but mostly misunderstood, Captain Marvel has to break free of mind-control and fight against her oppressors".

I'm not familiar with Carol's comics origin, but this group of alien "warrior heroes" who undergo a superpower-granting, possibly humanity removing process so they can travel the galaxy fighting another group of evil, shapeshifting aliens . . . wonder if they're taking any inspiration from ROM Spaceknight.
