Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Don't know that much about Shang-Chi, but I know he was originally the son of Fu Manchu before copyright got in the way. Do you think Marvel Studios will go the extra mile and try to bring that part of his backstory back, or will they just keep it a wink-wink-nudge-nudge deal like the comics do nowadays?
I really don't think that Disney wants to use one of the original Yellow Peril villains. In any case, Shang-Chi's connection to Fu Manchu has been downplayed ever since Marvel lost the rights; I believe at the moment, his father is called "Zheng Zhu" and is an exile from K'un-L'un.
I'm just flashing back on the discussions we used to have when they first announced Iron Fist. On the topic of why they should give a show to Mighty Whitey Iron Fist instead of legitimate Chinese martial artist Shang-Chi, an argument commonly thrown around is that Shang-Chi is fundamentally unadaptable because of his connection to Fu Manchu.
It had to be Iron Fist, defenders said, because Marvel just can't use Shang-Chi in the MCU.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.??? I really can't remember that argument to be made. The reason why it had to be Iron Fist was because he is the one half of Powerman and Ironfist. Once you decide to introduce Jessica Jones, it is logical to also introduce Luke Cage which makes it logical to introduce Iron Fist.
Anyway, isn't Shang-Chi some sort of secret agent?
Assume Tobias is talking about people who don't browse TV Tropes.

He was a member of the Secret Avengers. Which, you know, I really hope they make into a movie — I would love have a low key Avengers mission where the world wasn't at stake, but it all just spy stuff.

"It’s the “never compromise” speech reworded. As many of us I’m sure have learned the hard way, life can’t function with everyone as a zealot. "
So Moore was wrong, Cap is not The comedian, he is roshnarch....well, that is unexpected
": I said Superman is a moral paragon of pure rightness, not Clark Kent."
......Ok, you lost me here, what?
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"As long as they bring in good, varied, & just plain over the top martial arts.
I’ve been getting really into martial arts because I’ve been reading martial arts Kengan Ashura every day cause it’s updates daily.
That series has a serial killer judoka, a nak muay who’s also a championship boxer, an old karate master who can stab you with his fingers, a Burmese man with a hard as steel skeleton, a tiny young grappler, & a mercenary from the Congo who’s all about practical attacks.
I expect good variety from Shang.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
Kengan Ashura is hardly a good example for "accurate" portrayal of martial arts, it certainly is good (just not my cup of tea).
Man, this sucks.
I hate to say it but I really hope the shows just pick up where they left off on Disney +. It would be a greedy dick move on Disney's part, but it's better than the shows just disappearing into the ether never to be resolved, or getting rebooted and losing all the progress they made.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!I don't know. I don't think we have enough details to suggest who was pulling the plug here. Based on the reports about how Luke Cage went down, the fact that Disney is starting their own streaming service to compete with Netflix, and the fact that they do not want to use any of the Netflix shows on their app, I feel like the evidence thus far suggests Disney is the one to pull the plug here.
Netflix can't go ahead if Disney is unwilling to sign off.
With Marvel producing the show and Netflix distributing, the way I understand it is this:
- Netflix cannot continue to release new seasons of the show unless Marvel is willing to produce them.
- Marvel cannot release the show on their own streaming service without paying Netflix to license the distribution rights back from them.
So in order for the shows to continue to exist, either Marvel has to pay Netflix to borrow the shows from them, or Marvel has to directly compete with themselves by producing shows for a rival streaming service. Neither of these things are ever going to happen.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Correct. So, Both teams need to cooperate. And since Disney's whole move with their streaming app is 'ALL THE DISNEY STUFF IN ONE PLACE' (minus anything more mature) and they don't want to compete with themselves, meanwhile Netflix seemingly had Season 3 of Iron Fist and Luke Cage and Season 4 of Daredevil sketched out, it seems like Netflix was trying to actually make it happen and the ball was more in Disney's court.

Morality can be flexible, but there are some things that are inflexible. Murder, for instance — sure, you can kill in self defense, but you would never murder someone just because, would you? Because that would be against your morals.
Ultron didn't care about being "good"; generally, if someone says "by any means necessary," they are being amoral.
