Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I liked the coat he was wearing in the Sokovia battle.
I'm also kinda nostalgic for both of Carol's old costumes (I gained an appreciation for the original during EMH).
I know they're both kinda dumb, but I can't help it.
One Strip! One Strip!I do kind of want to see a classic Leotard of Power costume at one point in the films, just one, especially if it’s on a character they acknowledge is a little kooky.
I’ve wanted to see a little more Silver or Bronze Age design for a while: while a lot of the character look great in the general MCU, a lot of others do come off a simply having more boring designs.

The problem with the leotards, well aside from translating them to live action traditionally being decidedly hit or miss quality-wise, and that it really wouldn't fit in with the overall aesthetic of the MCU, is that it tends to be MUCH easier for comics to over-sexualize them to ridiculous degrees.
Heck Liz Olsen complained about her outfit showing too much cleavage not too long ago, so I cannot imagine the problems that leotards would cause.
And yes, I agree with those who say that, while some characters can believably wear that stuff, Carol is not one of them given her background.
You want to see what a comic-accurate Leotard of Power would look like in live action? Behold the Scarlet Witch.
I don't know about you, but I don't think it works at all.
As for the current conversation...I love Iron Man 3, because it's a Shane Black film in the MCU. The one thing I do agree on is that Maya should have been the Big Bad instead of Killian — it would have made a better twist and Maya could have even have been turned into Monica Rappaccini
, which would have made a lot more sense, what with the inclusion of AIM in the film (which never went anywhere).
No worse than I am. In the parallel universe where it got made, no doubt it has since become a So Bad, It's Good cult classic, and as someone who particularly enjoys inviting friends over to riff on bad movies, there's no doubt that if I had access to multiversal travel, going to that universe to track down a DVD of that film would be the first thing I'd do.
I think a Leotard of Power would work on a character who is intended be seen as not taking the world as seriously as the others - the kind of character who has the mentality of "I want to dress up in a costume and fight crime."
And given that we should finally be getting characters who have grown up in a world of superhero idolization, and Doylist-wise we're slowly starting to get more accepting of the idea that superheroes don't need to be sponsored or created of powerful organizations or conspiracies to exist, people (and series) with that kind of mentality is not really a stretch any more.
Like, if we ever actually get the New Warriors (looking less likely these days, admittedly), it would work for one of them because they're supposed to be idiots who are more concerned with looking flashy and being bombastic than being safe and conservative. Or, like, Squirrel Girl
◊, where it looking silly is wrapped up in the point of the character. Or better yet, Hercules.
Whether or not it's comfortable (physically or emotionally) for the actor or actress involved, however, is still a very good counterpoint. Not everyone is comfortable with putting their image out there for millions to see while wearing a gymnastics uniform. Though they could keep hiring professional wrestlers, who are more used to it.

I've always said that Bautista would have made a great Hercules if he wasn't Drax. Just look at him in "Guardians Inferno."
...We don't talk about that.
Well, it wouldn't be the first time a wrestler played Herc.
One Strip! One Strip!Or, like, Squirrel Girl, where it looking silly is wrapped up in the point of the character.
God, I hate that art. Their faces look like the "weird/creepy face" style change moments in shows like The Amazing World of Gumball, where the weirdness or creepiness of the face is the punchline. Or Randowis. Those faces look like they're from reaction faces in the Randowis comic.
I find them very Uncanny Valley in a very bad way. They have the appearance of being melted to the point of looking disturbing.
It's kind of like the Uncanny Valley for me, except the emotion elicited is disgust instead of fear.
I've heard that reaction before, though I admit not quite that level of disgust. The faces are deliberately pinched, off-centre, and stylistically flattened by design, for comedic effect. I find people like it better once they've seen a few pages in a row, seeing the characters in "motion" so to speak, because it's very much cartoon-inspired.

It doesn’t fit her personality much tbh, especially nowadays.
Though the dissonance can sometimes be amusing. EMH had that affect with her and Mockingbird, where these all-business military types just decided to up and wear extravagant and colorful leotard costumes in between appearances.
Mockingbird, especially. While Carol has the excuse of getting alien superpowers and being sent to keep tabs on the Avengers (the most extravagant and colorful people around), Bobbi just got a promotion and was only ever seen doing normal spy stuff in a normal spy setting. Wearing this.
Though admittedly, she was Veranke in disguise.
