Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

What's with the reactions, though? Venom was really good. It had a cohesive narrative throughline about impulse control, Tom Hardy's acting was quite solid, if a tad hammy, and it highlighted an aspect of the Venom comics not commonly known, which is that Eddie and the Symbiote are canonically a married couple.
They’re so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they don’t stop to think if they should.
Seriously, I’ll eat a hat if they get this same kind of success with Morbius, because I have reason to believe Venom only got that much money because the masses know him as "Spider-Man’s evil twin." But who, apart from massive comic book aficionados, will know who the hell is Morbius? Because they’ll be drawing blanks more than anything.
Venom made back 6.8 times its budget.
Homecoming made back 5 times its budget.
Oh, you're right, that is the weird and tortured logic that investors use.
With regards to Riot: I liked Venom, but I do feel like the film's plot would have made more sense if Drake and Riot were bonded from the start of the movie. The spooky "Riot finds a new host" scenes don't add a lot to the film, and Drake's bizarre choices and moustache-twirling behavior really only make sense if he was trying to bring about the symbiote invasion from the start.
Plus, Drake having been taken over by Riot prior to the film would explain why he's a Villain with Good Publicity despite constantly acting like an inhuman death-bot programmed for maximum dickbaggery.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Jared Leto is one of those actors (along with Johnny Depp, Mel Gibson, and Mark Wahlberg) where I object to them having a career as a matter of principle. But if anything good could come from a Morbius movie, a Blade movie (maybe starring John Boyega?) would be great.
Also, although my preference would be for the MCU to ignore the Venom movie entirely, I had what I think is an interesting thought. Given that Hardy!Venom doesn't have a personal connection to or hatred of Peter, they could use him for a version of that comic storyline (adapted in the 90's animated series) where the Punisher hunted Spider-Man. Venom is just as good as the Punisher when you want to have a Let's You and Him Fight between a Technical Pacifist hero and a Vigilante Man.
Ok. I know what Gibson's done, and I know Depp has been revealed to be something of a prick.
What's your beef with Leto and Wahlberg?
Man, why are so many Hollywood actors suddenly turning out to be assholes? It's getting annoying.
One Strip! One Strip! He'd need to have a reason to go after Spider-Man, though. Venom's set in Miami. He's not going to just run into Spider-Man at the cornerstore.
Venom gave its protagonist just enough motivation to propel him into conflict with the film's villain, but there's no real indication that he's planning on taking on "The Superhero Gig" as a full-time job. Like, sure, he ate a robber at the end, but that was just 'cause he happened to be in the shop at the time; he made no effort to actually go find the guy. In fact, eating him was plan B; he was first trying to scare him straight, but then seemed to realize how much effort having to track this guy down again would wind up being and decided he didn't care enough.
There's nothing to really suggest that Eddie Brock plans to spend his evenings running around downtown Miami looking for bank robbers to thwart, as opposed to just becoming a Nat 1 on Bystanders. "Congratulations, you picked the wrong day to be starting shit!"

Hollywood actors are still human, and all that entails about assholery and dickcraft.
Sometimes you forget to lock the closet door when they come hunting for skeletons, other times you're just so wealthy and successful that you don't care if they find a few femur bones. What are they gonna do? Stop hiring you to be in movies that make them stacks of money?
As for why it's a recent trend, probably just the the scandals with Weinstein and Cosby blowing open the floodgates and spurring stronger scrutiny than before. It's not as if people suddenly became terrible, it was just more glossed over than before.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!@Handsome Robb-
Leto has been extensively rumored to prey on very young women. Although I have to acknowledge that the specific accusation I had in mind when writing my post was actually about James Franco (don't cast him either). Leto also engages in a lot of terrible, harassing behavior toward his co-stars in the name of Method Acting.
As of for Whalberg, from his Wikipedia article:
In April 1988, Wahlberg approached a middle-aged Vietnamese man named Thanh Lam on the street and, using a large wooden stick, bashed him over the head until he was knocked unconscious while calling him a "Vietnam fucking shit". That same day, Wahlberg also attacked a second Vietnamese man named Hoa "Johnny" Trinh, punching him in the eye without provocation. According to court documents regarding these crimes, when Wahlberg was arrested later that night and returned to the scene of the first assault, he stated to police officers: "You don't have to let him identify me, I'll tell you now that's the mother-fucker whose head I split open." Investigators also noted that Wahlberg "made numerous unsolicited racial statements about 'gooks' and 'slant-eyed gooks'".
He's talked a fair amount about himself being a deliquent when younger and says he's straightened up, but the fact that his actions were motivated by racial hatred makes me very skeptical and relucant to forgive.
Edit- And with Depp specifically, it's the fact that he was a Domestic Abuser. Being an overall jerk is not great either though.

As for Jared Leto, he just seems like someone who takes his work far too seriously. When playing the Joker, he sent his co-actors in Suicide Squad things like dead rats and used condoms.

A really, really interesting review of Infinity War...I especially like the parallels drawn to Nolan's Batman.
And no, I don't want this Venom in the MCU. It would feel too disconnected.
There's nothing to really suggest that Eddie Brock plans to spend his evenings running around downtown Miami looking for bank robbers to thwart, as opposed to just becoming a Nat 1 on Bystanders. "Congratulations, you picked the wrong day to be starting shit!"
Well I mean, he needs to keep fuel in the tank to survive, might as well nom on bad guys while he's at it.
<Read's the Mark Wahlberg stuff>
...
...
...I'm trying to express my feelings on this in a way that won't be taken as a wacky joke. Because I serious want to state how shitty an act that is, and that he shouldn't be forgiven.
He better spend the rest of his fucking life repenting...and not being forgiven. There's no damned excuse for that.
He should burn.
One Strip! One Strip!Oh, wow, that's not at all what I dislike Wahlberg for. I didn't even know about that one.
I just knew that time when Kevin Spacey was outed as a sexual predator and the production team for the film "All the Money in the World" asked its actors to come back in and do reshoots to remove the rapist from it.
Wahlberg's team negotiated a $1.5 million payout for the reshoots - again, intended to remove a sexual predator from the movie. Meanwhile, his female costar Michelle Williams was only given a $1,000 per diem. Williams and Wahlberg employ the same agency.
