Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up] Actually, the networks have studios within them — so CBS has CBS Studios, Fox has Fox Studios, and so on. For CBS to air a show made by CBS Studios is actually cheaper than buying a show from another network — but then again, they might make more money selling the show to another network, so it's kind of a complicated game.

The only network that has a restriction on which studios it can buy from is the CW — since it is a combination between CBS and Warner Bros, it has to have half its showed produced by CBS and half produced by the WB. (You can guess which ones the WB likes to do.)

But, of course, when I said the networks will continue to "make" shows, I meant "buy and air" them.

[up]That's what I meant when I talked about production companies belonging to the same company. But those production companies don't produce exclusively for said company, not by a long shot. They develop their shows and then shop then around, with their attached Network having first dips.

There is a difference between financial producers and creative producers. To my knowledge Netflix is purely financial, they seek out creative talent and give them money to make stuff, they don't have any actual in-house works.

I find the current line of discussion tangential at best to the topic.

To return the thread to a marvel related conversation(yeah, I know is weird IM the one rerail the thread...).

I will said Mantis status as slave dosent since off because everyone was kinda buisy trying to understand what the hell is going on: Peter is feeling happy is space that is there, Gamora that something is wrong, Groot is groot and drax....well, he is drax and dosent care.

That and Ego seen affable and omnipotent, so for many mantis is just that.

I felt it was more a case of them having more pressing things to be concerned about then freeing one (apparent) slave.

I always figured it was like Star Wars’ Outer Rim, where the universe is so grungy and amoral overall that people just accept things like slavery, and you only see outright horror about it from people from the most sheltered places. Most of our protags are people who would be right at home on Tatooine.

[up]Kinda, Guardians are pretty much a zany version of star wars to being with so yeah, Peter is pretty much what Ben solo would have being with a good parent.

....Which is a lot consider Yondu isnt the best father figure at all.

He still had the values Meredith passed on to him, too. I think there's a sense in which Yondu learned as much from this kid he'd adopted as the other way around. It's like all those sitcoms where the swingin' bachelor/galactic marauder suddenly finds himself a single dad to a family he NEVER expected. *tinkly heartwarming piano music* *live studio audience says awwwwww*

So having just finished Daredevil Season 3, I expect Bullseye to blow up in popularity very soon...and for Daredevil to also be cancelled.

Though it felt to me like it could end on the note the show left us on.

We'll see. Honestly, I wonder how the contracts look like, if Netflix owns those shows permanently, or if there is some sort of clause which ensures that they fall back into Marvel's hand eventually.

And I wonder about the Marvel TV shows in general. I mean, someone at Disney apparently really likes Agents of Shield (luckily), and Cloak and Dagger will get a second season, but it has been some time that they talked about TV projects in the works. I also wonder if Disney will move Marvel live-action TV under Feige's control eventually. Nothing against Loeb, but the current structure doesn't really make much sense.

Also...which one is the most obscure property you think would make a good movie? Mine is still Silverclaw.

A discussion I recently had with someone who called Thor: Ragnarok his least favorite Marvel movie, because its sense of humor and timing felt so different from that of Thor, has left me wondering if it really seems impossible to find someone who loves Thor, but would still agree with someone who prefers Ragnarok. (Personally, I don't consider any of the Thor movies my favorites from Marvel, but Ragnarok feels the most up my alley.)

I liked Thor.

Hell, I like The Dark World and everyone hates The Dark World.

I don't think I've disliked a single Thor movie, though I do admit that I like Ragnorok the most, even if I hated what they did to the Warrior's Three (Volstagg and Fandral didn't even get a cool last stand the way Hogun did).

Thor is my favorite phase 1 film, and Ragnarok my favourite phase 3 film. There's not really much of a difference in tone, as a lot of Thor is slapstick humour or Thor being a dork. Ragnarok just makes it bigger.

I’m rather sad at the idea that we might never get Beta Ray Bill.

Wait Chris Hemsworth is still playing Thor after Avengers 4oursome right?

Beta Ray Bill kind of looks like if Frank the Rabbit from Donnie Darko dressed up as Thor and was a horse instead of a rabbit. And we've got Jake Gyllenhaal in Far From Home, and probably time travel coming up in 4vengers 2 4rious. Rule nothing out.

[up][up][up]See, I thought Thor: Ragnarok felt more like "a Thor movie" than Thor: The Dark World did, because Thor and Ragnarok both turn him into a fish out of water; Ragnarok goes further by sending him to places that the viewers would find as weird as he does.

He's a fish out of water in Ragnarok, too. A high fantasy-styled warrior prince stuck in a madcap, post-apocalyptic-styled sci-fi battleworld. Much of the plot on Sakaar is dedicated to how everything about being there is way out of his comfort zone, adding to his desire to get the hel out of there.

I mean, I like Ragnarok well enough. It's a decent popcorn flick. Not one of the better MCU films, but better than Thor 2, and maybe about as good as Thor 1. But it's difficult to deny that the entire middle of the movie has pretty much nothing to do with anything Thor both as a character and as a plot is actually about, including both the beginning and the ending of the actual film itself.

It is rather sad that Ragnarok ended up cutting a lot of material from the Planeet Hulk storyline like Caiera & the Warbound in general.

Would have been great seeing them on the big-screen.

I'm reading rumours saying that Disney is devloping four marvel mini series for their streaming service, so that's two more in addition to Loki and Scarlet Witch, and one of them will have Sam Jack's Nick Fury playing a large, but not starring, role.

However I can't find a good source for these rumours so I'm treating them as a nice hypothetical for now.

A SHIELD series that's actually in continuity with the movies?

Nick Fury could reasonably turn up in a lot of people's stories. The guy gets involved in anything he deems worth his time.

Agents of SHIELD is in continuity with the movies. If the real question you are asking is "A SHIELD series that the movies will acknowledge?" then the answer is still "No."
