Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I really hate the cliche of "brawny, dumb, comic-relief character dies to generate emotional torque".

In the first Guardians, he killed Korath and was the one to fire the giant gun that destroys Ronan's hammer and frees the stone for Quill to grab.

In the second Guardians, he befriends Mantis well enough so that Mantis tells him about Ego's real plan and he helps save her and the others during the climax.

So he is pretty essential during both movies.

He befriends Mantis by unintentionally negging her, which strikes a bit of a sour note, but I'll be damned if I didn't laugh.

Yeah, he unintentionally neggs her, which leans into his whole "dumb brawn" image, but I also like that, like Lindsay Ellis says, he has no shame at all and is one of the only Guardians that is completely in touch with their feelings, leading to moments like him explaining about how he loved his wife when she refused to dance or how his parents would tell the story of his conception or even admitting how wrong he was after losing to Ronan.

When you actually look at it like that, you could say that under all the silliness, Drax is one of the more mature guardians.

He’s had a life and a normal family(by his standards), and has even been a father.

I would like to see Drax find out that A) his daughter is alive, and B) that she is in love with a Kree.

Like, I feel like these films interest in family and emotional maturity, especially in their characterisation of Drax, makes for an interesting lense to look at that plot through.

Because in the end, even though Drax avenged what Ronan did to his family, did it actually benefit them?

Yeah, there's a moment in Vol 2 that goes:
Drax: I'm uncertain about parting ways.
Peter Quill: God, you're like an old woman.
Drax: Because I'm wise?

He doesn't feel any apprehension in stating his exact feelings, which pretty much makes him and Gamora the most mature Guardians. Gamora probably moreso, since Drax still does stupid stuff.

For all his emotional maturity, Drax is still an idiot. A lovable one, but an idiot nonetheless.

Well, Drax might win points by not having any hand ups about gender or sex, but he looses a lot of them because he cares way too much for looks.

And frankly, Mantis could take Drax's role of not really understanding social norms just as well. Especially since she apparently doesn't like the kind of thing Drax is (which I chose to interpret as "male").

And don't get me wrong here, I don't mind Drax. I am happy if he is around, I will tear up if he dies, and if they have to get rid of him, I rather have him settling down in peace somewhere. But I don't think that he is irreplaceable. The emotional core of the Got G is with Quill and Rocket and sometimes Gamora, not with Drax. And the big financial merch-gain is with Groot.

I think the Mantis/Drax thing in the second movie would have been a lot better if it was framed (more clearly?) as Drax wanting to be a friend and make it clear that his intentions were fatherly, but going about it in a completely messed up way.

I think there's some implication that this is the intent, but it's more so presented as a combination of different standards of attractiveness between species and an overall kind of sexist Slapstick Knows no Gender thing with Mantis.

I mean I still liked the movie and I don't think that Drax is that different, but I understood him in the first movie as being unintentionally callous based on not understanding metaphors/ non-verbal cues as opposed to being comically insensitive.

I have a huge amount of respect for Bautista being someone with that level of loyalty, but dammit I want him as Drax in GOTG 3.

The Bautista thing aside I think GotG 3 is the perfect time to shake up the Guardians roster anyway. Assuming Gunn won't ever be coming back, future movies after that would do better with a few new characters to give whoever the next writer will be fresh material for interactions and such.

True...especially since it is difficult to juggle more than five characters in a team, and currently the Got G have technically up to 8 members (depending on if you count Kraglin and Nebula).

[up][up]Well, Sean Gunn confirmed late last month that Marvel had spoken to him, and that they were definitely using James' script and that they still have every intention to do the movie, they just don't know when.

So, I dunno. Maybe a delay will be good. Bautista & company can finish Avengers 4 and then go off and do some other things and by the time it comes around to do the third, everyone will be a little calmer and more professional about it.

Assuming Bautista doesn't just up and break his contract, which is unlikely but possible

The Disney/Fox merger may be ready to close January of next year.

Also seeing rumors that Disney is probably gonna extend the Sony deal because they're looking to have Norman Osborn play a very big role in the post-Avengers 4 flicks. Apparently part of the reason for Silver and Black being shelved was that the script featured Osborn, but Marvel didn't want Sony to possibly contradict their own plans for the character.

Yeah, this news is days old. This is an optimistic prediction, but Disney has also already announced part of the future corporate structure. I am sure that everyone will be happy to hear that they basically will leave Searchlight and Fox 2000 untouched, same with FX. No changes in the leadership or anything like this. And it looks like Emma Watts will play a huge role in 20th Century Fox proper, which points to Disney wanting to run it like a brand.

First teaser poster for Spider-Man: Far From Home has been spotted.

RE: Spidey's future in the MCU: Hey. Hey. I was ecstatic when I found out Spidey was appearing in Civil War. I was mortified when he turned to dust. If Sony seriously tries to take him back. I will be livid AF.

RE: Disney/Fox deal closing on January 1, 2019.: That's really close. I mean, I don't want to get too caught up because a lot can still happen, but...still.

Wow.

Methinks we might be getting Secret Invasion and Dark Avengers after all...surprisedsurprisedsurprised (And Disney better extend that Sony deal. MCU!Spidey is best Spidey and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise.)

I wonder if Sony is tempted to close the deal at it's agreed end point so they can have Spidey free to dance around their up and coming venom verse.

However, it sounds like they already have a fair bit of freedom, because they're hoping to have spidey be in the Kraven the Hunter Film and I can't imagine that is slated be out after the original deal end point.

I'm keen for the Sony deal to last for a long while. I'd like to see Tom Holland's Spider-man age in real time with the rest of the MCU, and I'd love to see Norman Osborne and Dark Reign. And really I don't think Sony's Venom Verse NEEDS Spidey to be a major presence in it. Like, between Silk, Black Cat and Venom you have enough (anti)heroes to host the universe on.

If Bautista wants to leave, they don't actually need to kill off Drax to write him out. Thanos probably won't survive Avengers 4. Literally all he needs to do is go, "Thanos is dead. My wife and daughter are avenged. I am at peace."

Then he can walk into the sunset and everyone can just shrug and be like, "Yeah, that's Drax. Godspeed, buddy."

I don't think Drax would just walk away like that. The Guardians are his family now

What I think (or at least hope) they will do is just have the Guardians fly off in their ship at the end to adventures unknown, and have the scene make it ambiguous as to whether we'll ever see them again.

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.
