Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Bullseye, Venom, Daken, and Norman Osborn are presumably out. But Thunderbolts has been sounding increasingly likely for a while, and is a similar enough premise. And besides, I want the latter more than, like... The Sentry or something.

Of those in the Dark Avengers, only Mac Gargan has been introduced in Spider-Man: Homecoming, although he's not the Scorpion. The upcoming Daredevil Season has Bullseye, although I doubt they will use him.

Just introduce the Task Master and have him play all six to eight roles.

That should be a comic mini-series. Task Master just loosing himself in all the jobs he's taken to impersonate various heroes and ruin their reputations, things getting increasingly complicated.

Either way, the other thing going against it is the rights. Annihilus is a Fantastic Four villain, and Marvel Studios by way of Disney just got the film rights back.

Ehhhhhh, I think the deal still has some hurdles to jump over. We can't say Marvel Studios got the rights back just yet.

Films take a long time to make, and Avengers 4 - having been in production for a while yet - isn't going to be about Annihilus, and unless they only finalized the name after the deal went through it probably wouldn't be named after a story arc that would probably have fallen under Fox's purview (since it's about a character they had providence over) either.

Yeah...but then again, Fox wasn't doing anything with Annihilus anyway, now were they?

RE: Dark Avengers: Not opposing the idea, but there's not a lot of baddies to work with, are there? I mean, I could see them establishing Norman Osborn in Dark Avengers like how they established Spider-Man in Civil War and I wouldn't be surprised if they revealed something like the Iron Patriot armor was retained for archival purposes and is displayed at a museum...and then someone goes and steals it.

Well, we have:

Baron Zemo.

Abomination.

Ghost.

The Vulture.

So that should do.

(I doubt Dark Avengers will be the actual dark avengers).

[up][up]That's my ideal roster, but also with a fifth member introduced within the film itself. Maybe Songbird.

And then Zemo betrays them because he's a scheming asshole, and the remaining four have to defeat him.

Songbird is a staple of the Thunderbolts.

Well, yeah. One might think that's why Anomalcaris suggested her. I think everyone posting is onboard for the idea that "Dark Avengers" = Thunderbolts in all but name — I know I had my fingers crossed for it for a long time, and then they went and actually made Ghost the villain of AM&TW, so...

I honestly think almost every team has that staple member: that guy or girl who is usually a part of it in one form or another.

I guess for the Thunderbolts, that's Songbird.

Like J'onn J'onz and Victor Stone used to be this for the Justice League and the Teen Titans respectively to some extent, being staples of nearly every incarnation, but that's kinda changed now that they've shunted Vic over to the league.

Personally, I think Annihilation just means that a lot of character will die for real in the film.

Continuously reading, studying, and (hopefully) growing.

Chuck in Sam rockwell as Justin Hammer and I think you're golden.

Honestly a supervillain team doesn't have to be massive. Abomination, Hammer, Ghost, Vulture and Zemo are a good bunch.

Apparently, Mark Ruffalo was on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon wherein he revealed some huge Avengers 4 spoilers...

...but he kinda got censored? I'm not sure what happened.

Its intentional.he's on there to promote Avengers 4 and releasing spoilers feeds the hype machine

At this point the title is going to end up being the generic Avengers four

At this point, I'm leaning towards Avengers Forever (so it can be stylized as Avengers 4ever) or Avengers Disassembled (because I hope they will never use the actual storyline).

You can't call it Avengers Disassembled when they never even said "Avengers, assemble!" to begin with.

...

Maybe they will call it Avengers Assemble both as a nod to getting the original gang back together and reviving those who've died, but also as a potential Title Drop where everyone is finally gathered together and Cap finally gives the line that Joss Whedon, enemy of all that lives refused to give.

Haven't you seen now much people despise Avengers: Age of Ultron?

Also, he apparently cheated on his wife, which pissed people off even more.
