Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Evans didn't say it's been an honor to work with these people for the last 8 years. He said it's been an honor to play this role for the last 8 years. That puts the emphasis of the statement on Captain America, not the cast.

With regards to the Annihilation rumor, if they do wind up using the name, it'll probably be another In Name Only thing. Like how Age of Ultron had absolutely nothing to do with a character time-traveling away from an Ultron-dominated future to find a way to stop Ultron from ever being created in the first place.

This feels like a step further, though. Age of Ultron is still an Ultron story, where I’d be very surprised if this had anything to do with Anihilus.

Honestly my issue with it is that "Annihilation" sounds a bit too generic. If they're going to name it something that has little to do with Thanos, there are better event names to steal like Dark Reign, Fear Itself, or World War Hulk.

[up][up] Oh, it certainly won't. Annihilus is a Fantastic Four character. The Fox buyout hasn't been completed yet.

But it's a cool-sounding name and reflects the eradication of half of the universe, so that could be reason enough in Marvel's eyes to borrow it.

What about the annihilation wave itself? IIRC Marvel couldn't use named Skrulls like Kl'rt, but can use the race themselves, which is why they could use them in Captain Marvel, or did I remember wrongly?

The Annihilation Wave is an army from the Negative Zone, which is a Fantastic Four concept.

So. Like. They could probably use the Annihilation Wave if it does not come from the Negative Zone and is not led by Annihilus, which are the only distinguishing features about it. A featureless generic army of doom flying across space smothering life for generic reasons of doom is totally legally usable.

But kind of unnecessary since Thanos already wiped out half of the universe.

Oh, and they also can't use the Galactus-powered planet-bursting super-gun that made the Annihilation Wave so fearsome, because Galactus is a Fantastic Four character.

I'm not saying this would be a good direction to take, but I could see Thanos teaming up with the Avengers to fight an enemy under the justification that he already balanced the universe perfectly, and any further mass loss of life would unbalance it in the other direction and undo all his hard work.

In a film that also has to be about the Avengers taking down Thanos and undoing what he's done, trying to introduce a new threat out of nowhere that both sides need to fight as well would just overload the story with too many segregated plot threads.

I could see this working, actually, but not in a "it's the Avengers vs the Annihilation Wave" sense.

We know time travel shenanigans are going to happen, or at least we can assume it. What if we see a Bad Future, where everything's going to shit, and the capper of it is that Thanos' attack has made the universe too weak to stop the Annihilation Wave (in this case, completely faceless goons for lawyer reasons because they're not the actual antagonists of the movie). Everyone is screwed, the cosmos is getting ripped apart, and Thanos' falls having doomed the universe, etc.

So Ant-Man and Captain Marvel then go to the past to undo Thanos' defeat, and the actual plot is still about facing Thanos, but it's essentially the ultimate Foreshadowing for the next big threat: we now know the Annihilation Wave is coming in the future, and stopping them by being stronger in the past/present adds to the stakes of the movie.

I doubt it, regardless (as you said, there's too much going against it being about the Wave), and even so it's not ideal (not the least because the next threat would just be another guy with an endless army of mooks), but I could see it.

What exactly is the Annihilation Wave? Just in this conversation, it's been described as a wave of pure death and destruction, a planet-destroying storm, and a super-army of mooks.

It's all three — it's basically a bunch of huge space insects that eat everything in their path, directed by Annihilus. Of course, by "a bunch," I mean "trillions and trillions."

I can't think of a single Fantastic Four cartoon I'd recommend for someone getting to know the characters.

Personally, I liked the Fantastic Four cartoon that aired from 2006 to 2007. I think it’s as good as you can possibly get when it comes to the FF.

Frankly, kind of boring. I always think that insects in their usual size but in mass are way more terrifying.

A solid mass of insects the size of a galaxy would collapse into a black hole. Science and comics do not mix!

Well, In Name Only or not, if the movie would have the death scene of Thanos from Annihilation, that would certainly be amusing grin Most collected 'Being killed'-reaction ever.

I remember after the merger was accounced Chris Hemsworth and Sebastian Stan asked Hugh Jackman to return as Wolverine. Probably for a cameo in Doctor Strange 2 or some multiverse stuff.

It would make sense that some of these guys from the Fox and MCU universes might want to work with each other.

Jackman though has been logan far longer than any of the MCU actors (it's been almost twenty years).

As much as we'd all like to see Wolverine show up to give Cap a hand, we have to accept the fact that it's not likely to be Jackman doing it.

Rumor: Marvel is developing a Dark Avengers movie. I'm hoping this is more of a Thunderbolts movie, because I can totally see them bringing in some of the villains that survived in past movies — Zemo, Ghost — and setting up a Thunderbolts team.
