Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Vulture was more of an Iron Man knock-off than a Falcon knock-off. He was a foil to Tony Stark rather than Peter, which is one of the things that made him so fascinating as a villain.

I've said this before, but one of the most interesting things about Homecoming is that for once, the bad guy doesn't actually feel like Spider-Man's personal nemesis. Until the Liz reveal, there's no real relationship between Peter and Toomes. Toomes doesn't even know who he is.

The story is still Peter's journey but the conflict is Iron Man 4. Toomes is another Stane or Killian, a dude with a personal reason to hate Tony Stark to complement his wicked business. He doesn't give two shits about Peter Parker as a person; his vendetta is 100% Stark.

This isn't Peter's fight. But he makes it his fight, and that's what really makes it resonate as a Spider-Man story. It's not about him, but he makes it about him. Toomes doesn't care about Spider-Man, but he makes him care. One of the greatest things about Spider-Man, the reason he's Marvel's flagship character, is his propensity to just throw himself into things he has no rightful reason to be involved in.

Spider-Man is the guy who can't walk away. Ever. It doesn't matter if it's an alien invasion or magical demons from Hell or mutant violence or a mugging. He doesn't have a pay grade. He doesn't have a jurisdiction. If shit is happening and he's nearby, it's his business. Homecoming is the first film that really showcases that by putting him against a guy who, by all rights, is someone else's villain.

MCU Vulture was purposefully differentiated from the Falcon, but comics Vulture is frequently considered a knockoff.

In the end, the MCU Vulture we got was fantastic, but I sometimes think about the what-if scenario where Vulture's suit is deliberately more like Falcon.

Basically, this version of Vulture worked for Stark Industries, and he invented Falcon's wingsuit. Stark stole his design and sold it to the military, and Vulture's motivation is revenge for that.

I'm honestly not sure if this take would've been better or not, probably not, but it certainly would've been a possible alternate route.

Honestly, I think that this take on the character is more interesting than anything I saw beforehand, so I am completely okay with it.

"The story is still Peter's journey but the conflict is Iron Man 4"

Now I imagine toomes thinking he is in iron man 4 and wondering why Tony have take so long to show up.

So....I have to ask, what other chararter do you think have being affect by the snap? vulture? any from netflix? take you pick.

Everyone gets effected by the Snap

One thing I've wondered about is how you could avoid being caught in the radius of the snap, since it's universe wide it's impossible,,unless you slip into another dimension, something like a pocket dimension which are frequently in a little universe of it's own or ouside time and space altogether

Toomes is absolutely expecting the hero he has to clash with to be Tony Stark. Heck, I think he genuinely wants that to happen. His big daring final act of supreme villainy is robbing Tony Stark blind.

Instead he deals with this spider guy people have spent less than a year sharing vines of.

[up][up][up] How do you think the Snap affects the tv shows? Because, let's face ait, half the world is just... gone. That's way too big, it'd have affected all the shows in some way or another as the biggest tragedy ever.

I can only hope that it didn't interrupt his last few days with May by taking her away from him.

[up]well it depends: ether it does, maybe they can tell story before the snap or netflix truly live in a alternate universe.

Which a this point I will said "why not?" things are too weird right now.

Something I just got to wondering about: did Thanos exclude himself from the effects of the Snap, or was he also given a coin-flip's chances of turning to dust, and just happened to get lucky?

I figure he must've excluded himself, or else upon his death someone else could easily pick up the Infinity Gauntlet and immediately undo the Snap.

I don't think Thanos cared. Maybe him wearing the gauntlet just happened to protect him, maybe it was luck.

He did immediately teleport himself to Titan, so that could have been to protect the Gauntlet.

On the other hand, he said he’d “bask in the glow of a grateful universe”, so that does imply that he was planning on living through it.

There is a good chance no one could wield the gauntlet besides him. And as mentioned, the effect of the snap did not all happen at once but there was a delayed reaction. By the time everyone started dusting he had already teleported away.

Well Thanos is the only one with the resolve to do what really needs to done, you see. So when the universe inevitably repopulates itself back to pre-snap levels, Thanos needs to be there to snap us up a second round of salvation.

Chris Evans officially wrapped on Avengers 4.

Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.

too cliched for my tastes, have him go out fighting and leave it as last words type thing "I'll finally get dance" and leave it up to the audience's imagination whether he gets to dance with Peggy in the next life
