Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

And he’s doing a damn good job of it even if he’s hampered by Brian Micheal Bendis’ slow as molasses writing.

Eh yeah I'm pretty behind, haven't read comics in a while.
The point is that Doom made for a pretty decent Iron Man as long as he lasted.
Same way Ock made for a decent Spider-Man ignoring the fact he stole Peter's body to do so & other stuff.
Eh still too similar as well as to Vulture in how Tony is responsible for them.
I would like for Doom to see Tony as a Rival but not as his inspiration. Doom has no inspiration other than Doom.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I don't think Doom would work as a multi-film villain like Thanos.
While he's often shown having some sort of power armor, his strength lies mostly in his brain rather than his brawn. That can make him an excellent foe for one movie at a time. However, if he's teased out as a threat across multiple movies, viewers will likely catch onto the fact that most of the MCU heroes could beat him to a pulp if they wanted to, and the fact that he avoids getting into such a confrontation for several movies in a row might start to annoy people.
I would like for Doom to be a sort of anti-Stark in a sense. The dark parallel to everything Stark tried to be. But I wouldn't want him to be doing that on purpose; it shrinks the universe to make everything about Stark.
Call attention to it, sure.
- Captain America: I once knew a man who thought like you. Except he knew better than to do what you've done here. You crossed a line, Doom.
But don't, like, encode it into Doom's backstory. Let him just be a bad guy who exists in the world and isn't the Avengers' fault.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. That's what I kept saying.
On a different subject, what if Jake Gylenhaal wasn't really playing Mysterio, but a different, more personal member of Spidey's rogues gallery?
What if he's playing Norman Motherforking Osborn?
Incidentally, put me down for "Doom rebuilds Sokovia into Latveria" too. It's a perfect way to introduce his character while sidestepping the question of, "Okay, asshole, where was YOUR super-nation during Infinity War?"

That...might work. Although we've already had two live-action versions of Norman Osborn already, so I don't know if they would try for a third. And Jake Gyllenhaal doesn't strike me as the type, although he might be Playing Against Type.

That's true, if he's really Mysterio we can't assume that just because he's wearing a cape and looking like Jake Gyllenhaal that he's actually Mysterio. Maybe he's Mysterio wearing a Jake Gyllenhaal mask under his fishbowl in a full-on Old Man Jenkins sort of situation, and then under that mask he's Chameleon, and under that mask he's Bruce Campbell — not Bruce Campbell playing a character, but the actual Bruce Campbell, of Evil Dead fame, from the world of the MCU. And then Deadpool shows up.

And then he pulls off that mask and he's Robert Downey Jr. wondering if he actually is Iron Man, and then he takes off that mask and he's Nicolas Cage, and Tom Holland takes off his mask and he's also Nicolas Cage, and then everyone else takes off their masks and they're all John Malkovich.
I was going to post the "Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich"
scene from Being John Malkovich, but then I realized that that would probably be too off topic.
But hey, look, a set photo from Spider-Man: Far From Home
. According to other set photos, Ned and Betty Brandt are totally dating now.
