Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Makes sense. You need a script before you get a director, unless said the director is pulling double duty and writing the movie themselves.

And since they already had one, why not use it?

There’s also the part where the main cast has publicly stated their disagreement with Disney firing Gunn, and at least one has threatened to break contract if Gunn’s script isn’t used.

Yes, But it seems risky to draw attention to it, because what if whatever director they get end up making loads of changes? Film making is a collaborative process, so this is true of any script, but I was anticipating them waiting until they had a director and and then saying "so and so is adapting James Gunn's script"

Eh, maybe I'm paying too much attention to semantics.

They are pretty straightforward about the situation, that's all.

Either that or... *Set spoilers for Avengers 4* it's the much-speculated Avengers 1 Cap.

This song needs more love.

I don't know how that would necessarily work, unless the plot is kicked off by Steve biting it and Tony going back in time to get a younger version of him. Besides, his uniform is different since it has the scalemail look.

I really hope that they are played a bait and switch with the audience. They seem to do everything to convince the fans that Cap will die without outright saying it. I can actually see them going so far to have the scene, revers time and then someone else dies.

I am not ready to let go of Cap.

On a different note, I really like what this video says about not being too pretentious when judging Superhero movies:

Unlike the creator I am not worried about the future of the MCU, though. Yes, Infinity War and Avengers 4 will be the peak for now, but, well, when Avengers was released a lot of people thought that this was the peak, too. There will be another high down the line. And the common audience, well, they are already on board for Black Panther, Ant-man, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and hopefully Camptain Marvel. (There really need to be more females in the next bunch of franchises the MCU seeds).

Honestly, I don't think they necessarily need to top Infinity War. Small, personal storylines would be a welcome change after this huge event, to be honest.

[up] True. I expect them to tune it down a little bit for a while and building up towards the next big event. Marvel is nothing but patient.

If the hints in the Captain Marvel trailer and production are anything to go by, Phase 4 might involve the Secret Invasion with the Skrull. That's a pretty large arc in the comics to be resolved within a single movie (not that they didn't take a nice stab at that kind of consolidation with Captain America: Civil War).

Personally I feel like Infinity War was too big, and I'd gladly not see its kind for another decade.

Like there's just no room for character focus.

[up][up][up]On the other hand, I kinda worry if the whole civil war did in fact have any repercution at all aside of capitan being a outlaw.

Well Civil War also drives the plot of Spider-man Homecoming and Ant-Man and the Wasp.

I feel like Civil War could have been a phase spanning conflict, and it kind of is as we're still ye to see Tony and Steve reunite. But even more so Secret Invasion could span all of Phase 4.

I didn't watch that video so I'm not sure if this was covered, but people seem to be under the impression that it's improbable for a continuous story to have less obvious stakes after something literally earth shattering. It's so limiting to think that way about media.

[up][up]Well, is kinda pointless to care about what tony said to steve or what the accords means when have of the population of the entire damn universe just die.

is kinda the same problem we have in Ao U-CW, they put this team and....we never seen them before they fight each other.

[up]It depend of the how, most often that not it feel....lesser, after fighting the being who snap half of the population it feels....hollow.

By the same token, continually escalating the stakes of each conflict risks fatiguing the audience.

Ant-Man and the Wasp was probably the second lowest-stakes film in the entire MCU and it was still really really good.
