Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'd imagine it's a prequel? There's a good couple of years between Thor and Avengers Assemble where he's just un accounted for.

Wanda is really deserving of this and I'm really happy for her and Olsen.

There's a lot of supporting characters in the MCU who could benefit from this. War machine and Falcon would probably be way too expensive I imagine - makes me sad - but Valkyrie seems like a great fit, Bucky for sure too. Okoye could get up to all kinds of spy shit on a TV budget without needing the larger MCU cast. Vision would be doable too. EDIT: No he wont I forgot how intensive his make up is.

EDIT: I'd totally watch a Wong miniseries.

I would be surprised if Vision isn't a supporting character in the Scarlet Witch show. According to the article, the shows are planned to be around 6 episodes long, with the budget of a full-fledged film.

I'd like to see some of Wanda reflecting on the death of Petrio already. That's over due.

Considering Wanda is probably the least developed Avenger next to Vision, I'm all for it. Loki, on the other hand, I'm more conflicted on.

Loki has potential, we don't often get to see things from his actual point of view. The exceptions being when we are the only people that can see him, like in Thor 1 when he tries to lift the hammer and Dark World where he tells pops that he's dead.

Also, since it was mentioned last page, here's my list of the five top funniest or most awesome MCU characters to throw in a Fastball Special.

  • Rocket
  • Shuri
  • Spider-Man, especially if he spends the whole time not shutting up.
  • The Hulk, preferrably by someone much smaller than himself.
  • Tony Stark. Without his suit.

[up] I'd rather he be established as their father in the MCU, then them continue to ignore that connection and cast him aside just because Fox used him poorly.

Nakia would be great if they could afford Lupita Nyong'o. Shuri could have a bloody mini series too if you could think of stuff for her to do.

Cap with his shield would be pretty good to throw in a Fastball Special. I feel like Falcon doesn't need it, but it might be nice to help him get airborne quickly. Obviously, though, Ant-Man is the single best Fastball Special fastball. Hell, he and Hawkeye already kind of did one.

Loki is give or take for me, but if there could be a Sam show, then between that, Wanda, and The Clone Wars I would very seriously consider coughing up for Disney’s service

What would be the point of making Magneto the twins’ father in the MCU? It’s an active plot point that their powers came from the Stone.

There can be more than one family of European minorities in the universe.

I'd love for Sam Wilson to get a mini series, but I have no idea how they'd get his flight to work, even on a game-of-thrones budget.

[up][up][up]Actually, Marvel seems to have intentionally left wiggle room on that front. The recent visual MCU dictionary that was published described Wanda's powers as thus:

She may be called Scarlet Witch, but Wanda’s powers aren’t derived from the occult. Whether it altered her or merely unlocked something latent inside Wanda, the Infinity Stone on Loki’s scepter bestowed incredible powers of the mind. Wanda’s internal neuro-electric interface allows her to conjure blasts of red telekinetic energy. She can also use this energy to create barriers, levitate and move objects; to communicate and read thoughts by telepathy; and even to manipulate the minds of others.

That seems like a pretty ominous wording there. And in the actual film, Ultron even says that Pietro and Wanda were the only people to survive Strucker's experiments with the Mind Stone for some reason, though he chalked that up to their desire for revenge.

Also, the ability to explain niggling details in depth is an advantage series and miniseries typically have over movies.

The Age of Ultron prelude comic also lightly implied they had dormant powers (back then presumed to be an allusion to the Inhumans.)

So I've had a theory.

The Netflix MCU is a slightly alternate universe where nothing bad has ever happened to The Avengers. Think about it: There's never been any mention of Ultron's technology, or the near-destruction of Sokovia, or the events of Civil War. No one's been dusted. Nothing.

Tony told the others about what he and Bruce planned to do with Loki's scepter. Thor, not being crazy about the idea, wants to supervise, since this is Asgardian Tech. They find out that the Mind Stone was inside the Scepter and make Vision, as Tony had always intended. There's no big cataclysm that leads to the Avengers needing to retire or split up, so they're at full strength and Zemo's plan never stands a chance while Bucky is found and put in a psychiatric hospital. Without massive collateral damage and widespread destruction, there's no need for the Sokovia accords, so there's nothing to fight over. Thanos decides to hit up Earth since he already has the Power and Space stones and the other two are on Earth waiting for him, but it's 13-to-5 and the Avengers win. Universe saved, nobody dies.

So maybe, at some point, when they go back to dealing with Terrorist organizations, they'll deal with this "The Hand" stuff.

My various fanfics.

Maybe the new streaming shows will allow the Netflix shows to be more closely tied to events and have their heroes appear.
