Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I think with the voice it's ultimately just disposition rather than her actual tone or volume. We hear her talk in the film in what appears to be a period of mostly confusion and insecurity. Carol in the comics is past that point in her life and has refined her commanding presence, so it's easy to imagine her voice being different.

Basically, I imagine Brie's delivery will change as Carol comes into her own over the course of the movie.

Sounds like a good idea - I hope they do that.

So...

Considering that Humans and at least two other races (Xandarians and Asgardians) are physically indistinguishable, and that there used to be a minority race within the Kree who looked human (or something along those lines considering Mar-Vell) is it possible Carol didn't even know she was human in the first place?

[up]Dunno-it seems most of the races we have seen could initially pass for human if you concealed the pigmentation in their skin/hair/eyes. And a good chunk of them like the Xandarians appear to fall roughly within range of human physical and mental capabilities, so it is possible, I suppose. Depends on the specifics of her powers-in the comics, her physiology is quite different, including a more mixed Human/Kree biology than the Inhumans-depending on what her memories are, she might think she is just an unusual Kree.

Do we have any specifics yet of her range and source of powers, and if someone messed with her head? That happened a lot in the comics.

That's a cool take! I wouldn't hate that.

Brie Lars is a bit of a cemelon, so she totally could develop a deeper voice over time.

It's weird, I never EVER normally picture characters with voices, but Carol absolutely sounds like Jennifer Hale to me.

Yep, Brie Larson is a female Gary Oldman. You can watch two movies with her back to back and you might not even notice that you are watching the same actress.

I'm wondering if the Kree are deliberately turning her into Captain Marvel here, as opposed to it being an accident like in the comics?

I wonder if Ronan the Accuser will have the "judge the planet role" in this one.

We do see in the trailer Carol in air force clothes being caught in an explosion and then lying on the ground while power flows from her hand. I think her creation being an accident is being kept.

Something I look forward to in Avengers 4 is that cosmic characters might know who Carol is already. I'd like to see Thanos recognise her. Especially as in the comics he can have moments of Antagonist in Mourning towards Mar'vell.

There's got to be a scene in Avengers 4 where she and Thor team up, pretty please.

Or maybe "Thanos! We would have words with thee!" since Ao U outright refused to use one of Thor's best lines in the entire character's history.

How should that line be delivered by the way? I've always read the latter half as being deadpan but people seem to disagree.

Talking about Avengers 4 wish lists, I want a Fastball Special. Don't care if it's Carol throwing the Hulk or vice-versa - I've bought tickets to most of your ridiculous movies Marvel, I deserve this.

The spot where the Blockbuster used to be in my city is still unoccupied. Curiously, though, the indie video rental store a few blocks away is still going strong, even in this Netflix era and also not far from the local library. Must have great customer loyalty.
You gotta have free popcorn available to people walking through the store. That's the secret. (My local place also has nerd merch, but HMV had that as well and they tanked, so I don't know if it helps at all.)

Truly there's no better illustration of how power comes at a cost than the downfall of Blockbuster. Sure, we have all the entertainment choices we could ever want— but at what cost?

Any one Block Buster store had a better film collection than any one streaming service has today. Makes me nostalgic to think about it.

Loki and Scarlet Witch will be getting their own limited series for Disney's streaming services, with Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen reprising their roles.

Wow, that's big news! Very interested to see a solo Scarlet Witch show, and VERY interested to see if there'll be any crossover with the other MCU shows.
