Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up][up][up] Well now that Hank’s dusted Tony beating Thanos would be saving his ass.

Yeah it’s ironic how for all of Hank’s insults towards Tony, he is the one out there helping the world while Hank spends his days sitting on his ass as a hermit.

Hank is only barely not a supervillain. I think he kind of knows, even if he'd blow up if you said as much to his face, which is why he hermits himself away from everyone.

[up][up]And then he hits them with the ants.

The major thing that keeps him from being a supervillain is that he's got relatively small ambitions

He doesn't want his tech to change the world. If he ever did he soured on it. He just wants a monopoly on it and his family back together. Then he'll move to a beach and retire

And that's probably best for everyone

MCU Hank lacks the motivation to be 616 Hank. That's why Tony made Ultron, Hank was too fucking lazy to be bothered.

Stark Industries is now working on developing renewable energy to build a brighter future. Pym Industries is not working on anything because it was completely obliterated.

I think their differing paths is because they both have differing views on their technologies' potential.

Tony is defensive of who wears his armor suits, but he sees a future for the arc reactor to be used in peaceful and energy-producing capacities, or for his drones to protect the planet. Hank doesn't see any good coming out of other people learning how to synthesize the Pym Particle; he's certain its only inevitable outcome is war.

Which is ridiculous. In-character, but ridiculous. Shrinking things has far more civilian applications than military ones. Storage, shipping, energy, medicine... the list goes on. Most civilian companies would sell their children for access to Pym particles.

...Probably not the right way of phrasing it to Hank Pym.

I think Hank just imagines being the next Oppenheimer or Nobel. He's clearly a glass-half-empty kind of guy. Imagine the civilian applications...! But you drop one nuke...

Here's a thought: What if Tony offered to sell Stark Industries to Hank.

Why would he do this: one, to end the Stark Pym feud (that he barely knows about true, but still).

Two, because if you combine Stark Tech and the Pym Particles, you could probably do things more incredible than either alone.

Three, because if Hank owns the company of the one person he never wants to own Pym Particles, then he never has to worry about it again.

....you know, this made so much sense in my head. Now it's just full of holes. Oh well, discuss anyway.

"STARK SELLS COMPANY TO INTERNATIONAL FUGITIVE FOR $4.20"

But seriously, we've yet to see Pym and Stark in a room together. I do want that.

...Both of them de-aged to the point where Howard was still alive, all three of them and Maria and Janet at a fundraiser leading into the most epic Hank Pym blow-up.

Only if Hank slaps Howard Stark across the face while raving about how he's got to save the day right before their eyes. It's the only way he can redeem himself.

Does Tony even know Hank Pym exists let alone that he has a grudge against him? He didn't have any reaction to Scott dropping Pym's name in Civil War.

It'd be kind of funny if Hank and Tony met up, and they actually got along really well due to their mutual love of badmouthing Howard Stark.

[up][up][up] I don't think he does, no. The Pym/Stark vendetta is entirely one-sided. Stark is much too busy with very important things like

  1. Saving the world.
  2. Accidentally endangering the world.
  3. Saving the world from himself.

Etc. to actually know or care about who Pym is.

Hank Pym was someone that Howard Stark knew, but was clearly not important enough for Howard to mention him in between all of the times he had to think of Steve to climax.

As if someone who is p... off with his father is in any way anything new for Tony.

Frankly, I don't think that either of them care that much about each other.

Another distinction to note between Tony and Hank:

The driving reason behind why Tony focuses so much on developing inventions with a hoped-for positive effect on the world is because of his history as a weapons manufacturer. He feels guilt for what his creations did, and wants his life to leave more of a positive legacy on humanity than a negative one.

Hank has no such regret. He was much more successful at keeping the Pym Particle out of the hands of unsavory parties and thus no war crimes were committed with it. So he feels no need to heal the world with better inventions like Tony does because there’s been no misuse he has to atone for.

Interesting read. Given Marvel's current track record with villains, I'm not too worried that they'll just be the Dark Elves all over again. The last weak Marvel villain was probably Yellow Jacket. All of the recent Marvel villains have been stellar.
