Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Yes but Gunn was allegedly also supposed to play a role in the creative direction of Phase 4, so....
"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherI assumed that Disney would start to replace the Guardians after the third movie anyway...I mean, Pratt is expensive (though they still might dish out for him), Zoe Saldana will soon be very busy with Avatar, so there would be a need to mix around the group anyway. I think they will be fine as long as they have Rocket and Groot - which are both CGI characters. But frankly, I would watch a Got G movie starring Sly, too.
Disney won't ring him back. The reason for his firing is understandable, even if the person who raised the isdueis reprehensible in his own right.
Firing him drew anger from some quarters, rehiring him will bring heat from others and stir up the whole debate again. Right now I imagine Disney's focus is sweeping the whole mess as much under the rug as possible and working out how to go forwards, not back.
"These 'no-nonsense' solutions of yours just don't hold water in a complex world of jet-powered apes and time travel."I've softened up on Disney and Marvel just moving forward and finding a new director for Got G 3. It's not like they're gonna remove any and all of Gunn's influence. At the very, very least I'm expecting a quality movie.
On my wave, passing oooooooon![]()
So far it only says that Disney draws a line at paedophilia. And frankly, this is nothing new, Disney was always very careful about its image.
I really don't like this narrative which has been built around the firing. I would feel waaaaay more comfortable if it would be discussed in the terms of what actually happened. I hate the story the alt-right build around James Gunn, which is mostly BS, but I also dislike the whole "innocent jokes from ages ago can get you fired" narrative. The jokes weren't innocent, they weren't from ages ago (in: we are not talking about one or two idiotic jokes James Gunn made as a teen, we are talking about a whole list of offensive jokes he made as a 40 year old, and he only stopped to do it because they nearly cost him the Disney gig. That's what happened, not some impressive epiphany which lead to him changing his tune. Which doesn't mean that he didn't reconsider his actions later, but the point is that we don't know this...frankly, a lot of the jokes in Got G Vol 2 go pretty much in the same direction. They were the one thing I didn't like about the movie, even before the whole story broke. Like the "Drax thinks Mantis wants to have sex with him" joke or the "Drax brags about his turds" joke.
Yeah. This is definitely a situation where they can't win, only make the best out of whatever long term choice they make.
I do think that while the cast should be angry about it, they should be more angry at the asshole who did this just to satisfy a controversial agenda than Disney itself (even if their reasons for firing him may not be completely altruistic, as it's been pointed out on this thread that there are others who've done worse).
Not that I'm saying it should be a who is worse contest or anything.
Honestly, I'm a little mad at Gunn for saying those things, then not at least erasing the tweets. While you can question whether he's really changed or not, the fact that so many are coming to his defence makes me think there's some truth to it.
He's made it clear he's not proud of saying those things and I'm sure there's no hard feelings towards Disney either.
What we need to do is focus on making sure Alt Righters don't use this incident to cause more trouble.
One Strip! One Strip!Bautista now making noise about quitting
Guardians 3 if Gunn's script is thrown out.
Guess he's willing to risk a legal battle for something he's passionate about, and I respect him for that. But it's going to take a lot more than a walkout to convince Disney to stop pandering to the alt-right.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherHe's not even making the ultimatum about Gunn himself—I think the cast has pretty much accepted that he's probably not coming back (and their official statements have been very careful to be respectful to Disney). This is just about the script, which has no more to do with those tweets than the first and second movies did.
So basically, Bautista threatening a walkout wouldn't bring Gunn back and he knows it. But it might be enough to keep this small part of his legacy alive, if only because Disney wouldn't want to bother with all the extra expenses throwing out the script would cause.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff. The problem is we don't know whether or not Gunn's script was actually finished by the time he was sacked. What if it was just a first draft? Will Disney want to use a script that's, at best, incomplete? And who's going to make changes to the script if Disney finds something they don't like?

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherNicole's too busy with Captain Marvel and Detective Pikachu.
"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam Gallagher...Fuck, These two were the only involved in the writing...
How bout Christopher Markus and Stephen Mc Feely?
The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy.I wouldn't mind them bringing some fresh blood in. Also I'm kinda iffy on Markus' and Mc Feely's writing.

On my wave, passing oooooooonI'm conflicted.
Reading about these actors and such crying foul at Gunn's firing kinda makes me feel like an ass for being so okay with switching him for someone like Taika Waititi (even if that might not really happen per se).
Then again, pedophillia isn't really something anyone should joke about...
Then again again, Drax is one of my favorite aspects of the Guardians movies and I'd hate to see Bautista up and leave.
...
ARGH! Stupid alt-right asshat! Why did he have to go and mess things up for us?! I don't really want to bring politics into this, but why can't he take the hint that Trump's kind of SERIOUSLY dragging the USA into hot water?!

You're asking why a racist misogynistic possible rapist with connections to actual pedophiles hates basically everyone else and thinks that equality is a direct attack on him personally... might try to drag others into the mud with him?
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.I'm... not confident that this will have the effect that Bautista hopes it will. I certainly hope I'm wrong but my gut is telling me that Marvel would sooner kill Drax offscreen than cave into an ultimatum.

This song needs more love.

I was assuming that Drax would eventually dramatically die in battle anyway.
