Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Most of Rocket's time with Yondu is spent bonding over being assholes together. They've got a ship full of mutineers! People who "deserve" their assholery, yay! So they go around having a grand old time blowing things up and murdering people.
Compare the Rocket from the first movie, who tried to convince the rest of the gang to just give up and run away, because he thinks being selfless is stupid and genuinely doesn't want to see his friends get killed, but in the end goes along with their (to him) stupid heroism because he'd ultimately rather die with them than live without them.
Rocket being a Sad Clown doesn't speak to the moral duality I'm talking about that was missing from GOTG 2.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Been avoiding this thread to avoid spoilers for Ant-Man and the Wasp because I somehow haven't gotten around to watching that, so I don't know how aware of the next MCU!Spider-Man movie you guys are, but apparently:
- Jake Gyllenhaal is in this movie as Mysterio.
- Avengers 4 spoiler: Cobie Smulders is (probably?) also in this as Maria Hill, probably in a role similar to what Jon Favreau had in Homecoming as like an anchor for the larger MCU.
- The next MCU!Spidey movie is called Spider-Man: Far From Home.
- And we now have an official logo!
Eh...the point of the second Guardians movie is that Rocket's assholery is mostly self-protection. He doesn't want to get hurt, so he lashes out pre-emptively. His arc is to realize that he doesn't have to, that the Guardians will be with him till the end and will always forgive him unless he himself pushes them away deliberately.
Honestly, the second Got G made Rocket to one of my favourite characters in the whole MCU. I am ridiculously invested in a CGI raccoon.
Variety reports James Gunn is unlikely to be rehired for GotG Vol. 3 despite cast pressure
.
Disney's reasoning for not doing so, per an insider? "Those tweets were so horrible and Disney has a different standard then other studios." (LMFAO; as if their Golden Age cartoons were any less racist than their counterparts) They also make the old-fashioned excuse that "We didn't know!"
Didn't matter who was pushing the old tweets out, or how old they were.
If I were a Fox employee whose contract could get picked up Disney in the future, I'd quit the moment of contract pickup in protest over this incompetence.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam Gallagher
Because what if the staff end up having tweets similar to, or worse than, Gunn's and the alt-right starts to circulate those old tweets? Is it worth being in Gunn's position? You might as well find another studio who won't care about old tweets.
I don't see what happened in the Golden Age as being particularly relevant to this discussion. And it's a bit of a leap to assume someone would immediately decide that the uncertainty of unemployment was worth a protest resignation. I mean, most people I know don't think it's okay to post pedophile jokes on social media - it seems like a reasonable view to have...
While I have have qualms about Gunn's firing, Disney was well within it's rights to do so, and Gunn has acknowledged that. Still, I feel like they could have done so while pointing out that Cernovich is a scumbag whose actions have put innocent people at risk before. And they didn't.
"LMFAO; as if their Golden Age cartoons were any less racist than their counterparts)"
Actually...they were. There is neither a Disney cartoon under the 11 censored ones, nor does Disney tend to make the cut whenever someone list the most racist moments in animation, unless it is specific Disney animation.
Just so that you get an idea what Disney is up against:

Compared to this the Crows (whose "racism" is debatable) and sunflower (which is easily Disney's worst moment) are positively benign.

All a question of branding.

Disney certainly had its share of blatantly racist caricatures and characters back in the day, they were just always capable of making good enough of an overall product that it’s easy to overlook and whitewashing what they can’t. Not that this always saved them, hence the very old and still very well remembered backlash against Song of the South.
In addition to the ones already noted, there’s also the many caricatures from the official Disney comics, and the most obvious example: Sunflower from Fantasia.

Yes, Disney did stuff in the past. But we all know that, as of now, Disney absolutely holds itself to a higher standard than most studios in one regard in particular: being non-offensive, edgeless, and safe to maximize profits. Seriously, it's most peoples' biggest issue with Disney and the firing is wholly in-line for them.
I'm fully against Gunn's firing but claiming it's hypocritical for Disney is absurd.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.I feel that they aren't going to be able to maintain that image now that they own Fox, and all of their properties, including Deadpool. Kind of hard to keep the image of "family-friendly and edgeless" when their logo appears in front of a movie about an anti-hero who's made of cancer, kills constantly, and makes incredibly offensive jokes all the time.

Did you miss the whole big conversation he had with Yondu? I disagree with most of your assessment, but that's the biggest. Rocket is a textbook Sad Clown; he covers his many issues by being a funny asshole. Except every once in a while the mask slips and we see his loneliness and self-loathing.
