Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

So clearly we should punch people who don't deserve it so that doesn't happen
Forever liveblogging the Avengers
Logic.
But doesn't that mean some of us who're still angry wouldn't be able to punch Star Lord?
Can we afford to give that up?
He deserves some punch but not a lot of punch so if we punch him a lot then he doesn't deserve it and its safe.

It's not about quality, but quantity.

But that's less people punching Tony Stark isn't it?
Besides, Steve would punch himself 10,000 times I think. Tony would want to, but would be too busy getting punched by everyone else.

One Strip! One Strip!Good. I'd hate for people to think I was 100% serious.
70% at most. I do still believe that Tony would be the greatest super villain the world has ever known if he actually wanted to be one.
One Strip! One Strip!Joe Russo: He got snapped in the middle of a Galaga game. He was seconds away from his all-time high score.
Damn.
He was our last hope. Now we gotta rely on those guys who barely do any avenging.
Curse you Thanos! Your villainy is endless!
One Strip! One Strip! So this just came up...
The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy. Not sure how to feel about that.
I mean, yes it was years ago, but as we said, he did write those things.
I want Guardians as it is to be completed by the guy who started it, but I don't know if Disney should roll back on this.
I'm massively torn.
One Strip! One Strip!I might be okay with it. I don't know.
If Disney wants to clamp down and say, "Pedophilic sentiment is a Zero-Tolerance thing at our company," I can get behind that.
If they want to say, "It was years ago and there's no evidence the guy still thinks those jokes are funny," I can get behind that too.
I, personally, am thoroughly disgusted by the things Gunn said and I'm not at all convinced that his employment by Disney is not the single and only reason he hasn't continued to say those things. Frankly, I also have my own beefs with his portrayal of Gamora and Mantis, which - as we've discussed in the past - I think has thoroughly vindicated the old concern that Most F*ckable Superheroes Guy might not be the best pick to depict Marvel's female characters.
There's a lot to like in the Guardians movies, but Gamora's reduction to Generic Love Interest and that weird thing where Mantis is 100% being enslaved and everyone's just fine with that is not great representation.
I think it's kind of a complicated situation because, like, it feels like the right thing to do would be for it to be 2012 and for Disney to not hire James Gunn to direct one of their franchises in the first place. But that ship sailed. So the question then becomes, do you try and correct the mistake or do you just declare that too much time has passed and let it play?

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. This is one of those situations where the feces is gonna hit the rotational device no matter what choice is made isn't it?
One Strip! One Strip!Oh, yeah. Pretty much from the moment a Nazi discovered that one of Disney's prominent directors liked to joke about pedophilia, Disney was between a rock and a hard place. They could either be the people who betrayed James Gunn or they could be the people who shelter pedophiles. There was never going to be a PR win for them in all of this.
They cast their bid on what seemed like the least shitty of the two options and now they may be reconsidering whether they weighed them correctly.

x4 Only Drax knows Mantis was kidnapped and enslaved. Everyone else just knows she works for Ego. Given that the Guardians immediately adopt her, claiming they’re fine with her enslavement is baseless. I agree there are gross orientalist undertones.
As for Gamora, I need to get around to writing an article defending MCU Gamora, because in my opinion she’s a rich character unfairly derided because she’s the least weird/edgy Guardian.

It would make seven people feel better deserved or not.
