Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

An angle on this I've not seen is how this raises issues of worker rights.
I'm absolutely for people being held accountable for their actions, but the idea that companies can tare up contracts because of poor public conduct from a decade ago. That's just not cricket.
I'm not surprised that Gunn got fired for it, I am surprised that it's legal for Disney to do it.
I mean, I don't care about James Gunn exactly, he's got a net worth of 40million dollars and he's not a lynch pyn of modern culture, so he and these movies will be fine, but it's not a prescient I can condone.

Yes, we all know an official divorce statement is the full, detailed, truth. And that every domestic violence victim always pursues his or her case rather than drop it. Also, that same statement specifically says that no one made anything up for financial gain, aka Amber wasn’t lying.
Depp’s managers backed up her accusations. And it’s really not okay to reduce the photos and videos
to “bad-looking.”
Absolutely not. She donated her entire divorce settlement to charity.
That’s not what one does if one spun accusations to “leverage a better divorce position.”
We’ve already litigated the Depp domestic violence case at least once on this thread, but a fact check
is in order here.
“Rock star life” is a gross way to minimize repeated incidents of assault and battery. Also, an ex-spouse coming to one’s defense is meaningless. That’s like defending a friend accused of murder because “well, they never murdered me!” And plenty of people lose their moms without turning to abusing their spouses and staff. Her death might explain his behavior, but it does not excuse it.

Directors aren't exactly employees. They are contractors. Which means it is based on contract if you can fire them or not (or how much it will cost you to fire them...ie Burton had for a while a clause that studios had to pay him once hired for a movie even if said movie never got off the ground). And you can bet that James Gunn has some sort of behaviour clause in his contract.
I think the more cynical belief would be hand-waving away Depp's accusations as "a rockstar lifestyle" and "lawyer spin" rather than the claims of an abused person that got nothing out of the whole ordeal (as Wisewillow just pointed out) other than the irrational and everlasting hatred of Johnny Depp's toxic fanbase and the toxic elements of the internet in general. Believing what you just described (Heard being forced to recant and Depp covering his actions with the law) isn't cynicism, it's a basic sense of Hollywood's reality.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."Yes, Johnny Depp is pretty indefensible. Regardless of how a given person feels about the James Gunn accusations, I hope we can all agree that active violent abuser Depp deserves the boot a lot harder.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. Then Amber Heard will remain a battered victim.
You can't unbeat someone.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Yeah, fuck Depp. I was already sick of him and the Pot C movies, but hearing about these abuse stories...eesh.

On my wave, passing oooooooonOkay please stop trying to spin this in a positive or optimistic context.
There is nothing positive or optimistic about this at all unless he just gets straight up fired & blacklisted as punishment for all his troubles.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."If he shows no desire to atone then let him face punishment.
And if he only shows desire to atone after said punishment then that changes nothing.
Cause it’s like a serial killer being remorseful AFTER they get caught. What am I supposed to be sympathetic? They would have kept on killing if they remained uncaught.
They made their bed, now them lie in it.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."This is getting into non-MCU weeds.
~KJMackley, you're edging close to, if not over, the line regarding physical abuse victims. Thumped to caution.

I know we aren't guessing names any more, but I'm gonna say Avengers 4 the win.
Don't steal it, or I'm hunting you all down.
You guys know how crazy I am. I won't let logic stop me.
One Strip! One Strip!

Am I still the page-topping king?
