Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

"It's just not a moment that should be funny, and the defense I keep seeing that Asgard should get blown up because Odin got his gold from other cultures just doesn't work for me.

There's a bunch of innocent civilians, children, watching this happen. Why is that funny? They don't deserve to loose their homes because the old royal family were assholes. "

Because Asgard is a monument of conquest and one that it would be imposible to turn into anything else....or something about that line.

I really never get why to introduce a talk about colonialism in what is a buddy cop comedy between thor and hulk.

The legacy of colonialism runs pretty close to the surface in New Zealand. Maybe it shouldn't be hilarious, but it's a past that can't be shrugged aside or swept under the rug. People have different ways of processing outrage — humor is one of them.

The Asgardians didn't deserve to lose their homes. They didn't deserve to have homes paid for in blood either probably.

Deserve is a weird thing.

[up][up]While that is true, the problem is that humor come from another plotline(sakaar) that have little to nothing to do with asgard, so it give the already talk feeling of being two movie smash into one.

I think the Thor movies always had that problem, but never really tried to reconcile the two sides before. Sure, Ragnarok is messy, but that was always going to be messy. It kind of needed to be messy, and iconoclastic, and faltering. Flawed though it might be, it shook things up and gave Chris Hemsworth's Thor the shot in the arm he needed, to carry his sizable chunk of Infinity War. The versions of Thor and Hulk we had as of The Dark World, Iron Man 3, and Age of Ultron wouldn't have cut it.

Pretty much...every Thor movie is basically two movies smashed together, but usually it is the Thor Story and the Loki story, so both of them are still kind of connect. This time around though Thor and Loki have their story together and the whole Ragnarök plotline feels entirely disconnected. And that is the part where supposedly the thematical gravitas of the story is.

The problem is that the Ragnarok stuff, which is where all of the interesting thematic stuff and emotional resonance (not to mention tension) is, feels like the B-plot. The movie seems to me far more interested in Thor's "wacky hijinks" and goofing off on Sakaar. Honestly, as far as the Thor movies go, this one was the one where I felt like the two plots felt the MOST disconnected from each other, and not in a good way.

Also I feel like Hela suffers as a villain because of this as well.

Eh, we’ve had so many movies where the apocalypse is played so seriously and straight, it felt different to have one that plays it more lightly.

But it is partly consequence of putting Planet Hulk into a Thor movie because Marvel can’t make standalone Hulk films.

Personally, I want to be taken on an emotional journey with the movie, and not just sit back and enjoy a "fun romp." So if a movie is going to bother with an apocalyptic story, at least try to let me connect with the place that is about to be destroyed or the people who are about to be wiped out.

It's weaker than it could've been, but I don't think the comedy is the problem, just a lack of time spent developing the Asgardian side of things. I think a lot of the time we spent on Hela's exposition and dog-kicking with Skurge would have been better spent on showing Heimdall and the Warriors Three fighting a losing battle for Asgard. That could've easily worked to do more to flesh out Hela as well — think of the relatively small amount of time Saruman gets in the Peter Jackson movies, but his presence is felt because of the weight of that one confrontation with Gandalf.

"Also I feel like Hela suffers as a villain because of this as well. "

She does because she is ALSO thor and Loki older sister, the rightful heir of asgard, she and odin are the reason Loki exist with is messy complex as jotum and the reason so many hate asgard.

If anthing, the lack of interaction between the odisson family feel really annoying.

"it shook things up and gave Chris Hemsworth's Thor the shot in the arm he needed, to carry his sizable chunk of Infinity War."

Funny thing is, I like infinity war actually allow Thor to have a serious moment without any damn joke in the way, For me thor have quite a comic relief of sort, the "joey" of the group with two main chararteristic:He is atractive and he like fighting,so seen him try to deflect is fear and them give in was a really good moment for the movie.

"it felt different to have one that plays it more lightly. "

Maybe but a main draw of apocalypse event is that all bets are off, ragnarok feel....small

I wish Marcus and Mc Feely could write all of the MCU movies...nobody gets those characters as well as they do.

Markus and Mcfeely are great but they are not infallible. I thought there were a few issues with the Flanderization of the Guardians characters, and unless he's actually plotting something yet again, their Loki wasn't nearly as clever as he should've been.

[up] Eh, James Gunn had direct say in how to portray the Guardians characters.

But yeah, I wonder about the way they disposed of Loki....

So, on a lighter note, what are your favorite Stan Lee cameos in the MCU? My favs were The Avengers ("Superheroes in New York?"), all of the ones from the Thor trilogy (in the third one, we even got to see Stan play a villain, kind of), and Guardians 2.

Ragnarok cameo as a creepy alien barber with a scary tool is my favorite.

I did rather like his Ant-Man cameo as well, as part of Luis's story.

I like the "Superheroes in New York" one. And the one he did in Ao S. It's (unintentional I think) hilarious because he tells Coulson "you can do better now" and this is exactly the point at which the show starts to show its true potential.

I like the GOTG 2 stinger where he's rambling on to Watchers who get bored and walk away.

My favorite Stan Lee cameo in the MCU would be him trying to match drinks with Thor in Age of Ultron. But my favorite Stan Lee cameo period? Gotta be him as the oblivious librarian in The Amazing Spider-Man.

...Why didn't Heimdall try to Bifrost them away?

And where were they exactly? It looked like just random space, but the way they had Heimdall bring it up, I get the feeling it was supposed to be somewhere specific.
