Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

What happens after the joke and after the somber silence to stifle it because I remember a good amount of somber silence and then a scene transition that was itself somewhat somber minus the running gag of Thor throwing stuff at Loki that was played for feelings instead of laughs the third time.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersGuardians 2 had way more moments of the jokes ruining the quiet moments imo.
This song needs more love.
It had more unfunny jokes, but the dramatic moments were all spot on. Especially the funeral scene.
In any case, the main reason I don't want Waititi is because he will most likely come in and try to tell his own story, completely ignoring what was set up the way he did with Raganarok. Not to mention how dismissive the part of the movie which was announced in the title was treated, because obviously Waititi really wanted to make a Planet Hulk movie. So for his next Marvel project, I want him to do something mostly disconnected with which he can go crazy and do whatever he wants. But for Got G 3 I want someone who will respect what was done so far and put a honest effort into continuing the storyline.

The humour in Got G 2 did feel pretty weak compared to the first installment, which is fine I guess because that movie didn't intend to hinge on humour as much.
Speaking of which dangling plot threads are there?
The Gamora, Nebula and Thanos stuff will presumably get wrapped up in Infinity Whatever.
The Mystery Of Who Peter's Dad has been handled.
There's the OG Ravagers gearing up to steal some shit but thats probably more of a cheeky continuity nod than a plot hook.
Theres the Adam cocoon which does need to get dealt with.
Rocket's issues have been brought to the forefront. Not necessarily gone forever but made so explicit that him regressing while realistic would be retreading.
You could introduce Moondragon and I'd really like for that to happen and for her to be dating Phyla but nothing so far has indicated that Drax's daughter survived.
Mantis doesn't really have any plot hooks although I'd like to see her get more interaction with Groot, Rocket, and Peter.
We don't really have as many dangling plot threads as the Thor franchise had, I don't think. But if they don't introduce Cosmo, I will be disgruntled.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersJames did say that he wasn't intending for Adam to be in Gotg 3, he wanted to introduce him so that he could make appearances in later cosmic stories he was planning, but I could see his replacement wanting to use him.
THINGS I WANT TO SEE IN Got G 3.
Gamora and Nebula dealing with their new found freedom and, like, how to move on from their abusive horror-dad, and also the rest of their siblings being dead.
Drax dealing with having now enacted his revenge. Honestly I'd like for him to discover his daughter survived, and that all his bloodshed he's inflicted in his roaring rampage didn't actually benefit her or her mother's memory.
Mantis and Peter being adoptive siblings.
Peter dealing with space-marrying into a family with Nebula in it, and like, having to be supportive of Gamora's relationship with her terror sister.
Likewise, Nebula having to deal with her sister marrying a human-fool and a bug-victim into her family.
Groot coming of age.
I guess in terms of world building stuff, How the Kree react to both the Novaforce AND Thanos's armies being destroyed. I guess thus making them the top dogs.
Really, I'd like the sotry to be about, "how, once you've gotten free of your abusive birth family, do you move forward and go on with your found family"
The BIG thing I feel this trilogy needs to end with is with the guardians being on earth, and Peter reuniting with his Granddad. "Hi Grandpops. I'm back. It was really hard loosing mom and I'm sorry you had to loose me to, but I managed to find a new family. This is my adoptive sister via a horrifying planet brain which decided to ruin our lives from birth - a bug lady who can feel your dreams; this is my space-girlfriend who I met when she tried to kill me on a bounty mission - the deadlist woman in the galaxy, this is my sister in spacelaw who wants to kill me and everyone else in this room - a cyborg hate machine. Oh and this is my son, a talking tree."

That puts it pretty well. I don't think there's really any other way Disney was ever going to handle this, and I'm not really going to cast the blame on them given what they do and who they do it for. But I can sort of see that journey, from Troma to Scooby Doo to Guardians, and that impulse to shock and offend and rebel, and the use of early-days Twitter as kind of a small crowded hangout space as opposed to the sort of neverending press conference it's become.
Wish it could've been otherwise, but now that it's done, James Gunn owning up to the past here is the right thing to do, wherever the chips may fall.
I can say that I feel no ill-will towards him. And that I wish that he had deleted those tweets. But I still think that Disney did the only thing they could do, no matter how much it sucks. And frankly, I don't want Disney to be different, because for the better or for the worse, the name is standing for something.
I think the actual bad guy conflicts of the Gotg movies are un important to me. I'd quite happily have these movies be slice-of-life anthologies-of-shorts showing this weird family just, being themselves together.
I GUESS, if I had to come up with a plot that would encourage the emotional beats I mentioned in my above post. I'd have the Kree empire, now self declared un-rivalled, insist on having custody of Nebula for what ever reason, maybe secrets are in her data core the Kree want. And the team have to defend this person the majority of them really don't like, maybe Mantis has a big part in trying to read her cyborg brain to find those secrets.
Anyway, Phalya-vell takes the job to hunt down the guardians, because she recognises the name Drax and doesn't want her government to kill her girlfriend's dad.
Yadda yadda yadda, third act happens, maybe Adam Warlock is involved who knows, final sequence is Peter taking everyone to Earth and introducing them all to his grandfather.
I think what scares me the most is how Disney will be forced to respond to the growing calls for them to reconsider. It could make or break the company's future in terms of being able to attract talent and getting people to buy their products. There's no reason to believe that they'll rehire Gunn if they're scared of a right-wing wacko smuggling a gun or explosive into Disney parks or offices (and they have reason to fear that, as Comet Ping Pong found out).

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam Gallagher
That's the pizza shop that Pizzagate centered around. A guy who believed it almost killed a bunch of people there.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherI don't think they should hire him back.
I think it sucks, but we know he's not gonna say that kind of stuff again (and he'll keep a sharper eye on his twitter, as should a lot of people from now on), but Disney made a good choice.
If Gunn were smart, he'd say that himself and really prove he's the class act many have said he's become. Not only leave no doubt, but hopefully in a way that makes it much harder for those right wing pricks to pull something like this again.
Saying that Disney should stick to it's guns will certainly take power away from those guys, and ensure he walks out with class.
I do hope they keep Kraglin though. Him I liked.
One Strip! One Strip!About the scene with Korg and Asgard's destruction, here's
a comment on Reddit from a few days ago that I found quite insightful.
Tldr: Taika has deliberately brought the theme of imperialism and colonization into the movie; eventually you're not supposed to care too much about Asgard the place and Asgard's destruction is necessary in a way because of the way it got it's wealth; but Asgard the people live on as immigrants with a new wise King who will all try to be better than their ancestors.
The scene with Korg and Asgard is an exception to Thor Ragnarok generally being skillful at dodging bathos. I think Taika Waititi would be a solid replacement for James Gunn, as he is also able to pull off the cosmic side of Marvel pretty well, and in fact may be able to do it better in a GOTG movie now that he isn't forced to juggle two separate kinds of movies at once.

I actually went back and watched Thor Ragnarok again and the moment everyone points to with Korg ruining the destruction of Asgard with a joke is itself followed by a silent somber moment.
