Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

He didn't this time because he actually manage to dig something up which is problematic in any context, especially if you work for Disney.
James Gunn just should have deleted those damn tweets when they first came up.
So, regarding Cloak and Dagger...I don't think that they have shown any actual dates in the show so far, but it should be set before Luke Cage season 2, because the character which turns up in the show was mentioned in Luke Cage as having left beforehand.
I just worry how far back this precedent might go back now.
Like, for example, I have a bunch of high school classmates that have said truely reprehensible things in the past. I made facebook posts ages ago complaining about their comments of "holding down a girl and choking her out while fucking her".
What happens if that gets dug up well over a decade later? Yeah, its a completely disgusting thing to say and there's a lot of problematic shit there, but am I going to judge a 30 something over what they said when they were 17?
I'm worried about how far this might end up going. Hell, even as understanding and compassionate as I am, I'm sure I've said a shitty thing or two if you dug far enough into my facebook or something. God, there was a time when I was really uncomfortable with homosexuality and now I'm happily comfortable with my sexuality and my partner.
I think this is just going to get nasty if we go back further and further into a person's history and deem it worthy to judge. People can be shitheads. MASSIVE shitheads. But we need to value the concept of redemption and working to being a better person with proof to back it up.
ESPECIALLY in this state of America. For example, Trump supporters that say really awful ignorant things. Do we want them to learn and understand their ignorance and become smarter better people for the world? Because, as much as I want to punch them in the face for what they say today, I know that they'll keep on existing and saying stupid shit (and, well, VOTING), but saying 'Fuck 'um they won't change' won't solve the problem.
To accept that people will not change and strive to be a better individual is to accept that there is no solution to the evil they can cause in the world.

You'll just have to decide on a case to case basis. James Gunn wasn't a high school student when he made the remarks, he was a grown man, and it wasn't that long ago either...the MCU is older than those tweets.
There is no use to this line of argument...that is like saying "if we take down confederate statues we might take down statues of Washington next". It's nonsense.
The old saying goes: If you don't want bad things being uncovered, don't do them at all. Because anything put out, especially on the Internet, will come back to haunt you.
I am not surprised that the alt-right would do something like this considering that their own "role models" have been hit with a wave of accusations relating to scandals and crimes dating back from a year to a decade ago (looking at Jim Jordon, Micheal Cohen and of course, Donald Trump).
With that said, I think Disney can weather these accusations out. And who knows. Maybe when all of this cleared up or if the alt-right is caught in a bigger scandal, they can rehire Gunn again. Or they can hire new blood and talent in the market.
As for the alt-right itself, remember they still have idols on pedestals. And a Broken Pedestal can demoralize their followers aka their source of power.
Well, first of all Marvel needs to find the right people to finish Got G 3...I think they should start with putting Nicole Perlman on it. Remember, she was the one who picked out the Guardians in the first place, she decided which characters which be on the team and she was the one who wrote the first script. Nobody in the writing room knows the property as well as she does (plus, I always felt that James Gunn's attitude in playing down her involvement was always kind of sh... considering that there wouldn't even be a Got G if she hadn't made them her project).
And then they need a director...not Taiko Waititi. While some of his humour is similar, he lacks the gravitas I love so much about the Got G franchise. Plus, his style is too distinctive to be able to jump into another directors work. They need someone who is able to deal with a CGI heavy property and who would be able to leave his ego at the door.
Well, here's a list.

The Zellner Bros and Macon Blair sound promising.
The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy.Well I do hope they find someone else to finish the job.
Gunn screwed up by making those comments, and now he's gotta live with that, even if he did apologize.
I'm sure he's aware of that. It sucks for people who wanted to see the end product of his direction for Guardians, but this won't impact him too much (beyond probably kicking himself for saying that and not erasing it) despite the attempts of Cernovich. If he's truly as repentant as he claimed about it, he'll be able to show it.
Disney will find someone new, and hopefully someone who can keep ensure the character feel the same.
...Not much else left to say really. Can we find a new topic?
One Strip! One Strip!Even if it's not out yet, looks like Avengers 4 might even surpass the original Avengers.

If I might make a suggestion, what about Nicole Perlman? She was involved in the original movie, so it might be interesting to see what she would bring to the table if Gunn isnt involved.

Oh God! Natural light!
No, it couldn't, because that will be Captain Marvel anyway.
And yes, everyone has to start somewhere, but if you try to jump to the top of the ladder you will just hurt yourself...remember Josh Trank? If she even wants to be a director (maybe she is perfectly happy being a screenwriter and sometimes producer), she should at the very least direct a Marvel one-shot before being allowed even near one of the big movies.
Perhaps they can poach Wan from Warner Bros? If nothing else he would embrace the craziness of Marvel's cosmic properties...

Taka Waititi and Nicole Perlman combine together into their final form to direct Vol 3.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."

I don't know the first thing about this James Gunn but Cernovich tried the exact same tactic months ago with Sam Seder, a Left Wing reporter. He took an old tweet where Sam sarcastically mocked defenders of Roman Polanski and tried to take it out of context to make Sam look bad. Got Sam fired from MSNBC and made his show lose sponsors but then there was outrage and Sam was hired back when MSNBC realized "don't listen to the Pizza Gate guy."
So that failed dismally but it looks like he's back and maybe it's working this time.
