Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Dammit!
Now Pirates is ruined for me!
...the first one. I admit the others ain't been that great.
One Strip! One Strip! To be quite honest, I don't think Gunn's career is over. On the pause, and very certainly he won't be directing Guardians 3. But this is on the comparatively lighter end compared to the many other Hollywood scandals this year, and the man who instigated his firing is so shady and corrupt that I wouldn't be surprised if something about him spilled out within the next few years.
Gunn claims he has reformed, so if he means it, then his behavior after this should show it, and if nothing else bad comes from him between then, then his career will eventually resume. Joss Whedon's already back to work on two shows after the reveal last year that he cheated on his wife multiple times throughout his life.

What makes this rotten to me is that back when Gunn was first announces as director for Gotg we DID complain about these tweets, but Disney didn't care. But now, when someone on the political right complains about them rather than from the political right, Disney does care.
It's this weird double standard of Disney only enforcing these roles when it's the right who are speaking up. Depp not being dropped either is another example.
I think it's less that it came from the right and more than Disney is protecting it's printing machine investment. Back then, Gunn was tasked with a bunch of C-list heroes team up, now that the GotG are worth almost 2kM. They have to act.
PD, short scale is a piece of junk.

Oh, yeah, it's definitely not the end of his career. He won't be welcomed back to Disney due to their high standard of not condoning pedophilia, but I doubt he'll have any trouble finding new projects. He's not getting blacklisted here.
EDIT: Also, back when Gunn was first getting hired, the controversy then was some blog thing he did about the Most F*ckable Superheroes. It seemed crass and disrespectful, and it cast doubts on his ability to direct a serious superhero film.
That's significantly different from talking about how cool it is when a monkey sexually assaults a child. Disney was okay with Gunn because that controversy was about a 3 on the shameful scale. This one's a 10.

I’m not linking because they clearly endorse Mike Cernovich and other unsavory fellows, but it looks like the producers of An Open Secret are making their intentions clear on the matter with James Gunn and may have just given Cernovich a push with all the things going on.
For those who don’t know, that was the documentary on Hollywood pedophiles released back in 2015. The two producers, Gabe Hoffman and Matthew Valentina’s, run a Twitter account for it in addition to tweeting themselves on pedophile related content 24/7. Notably, Director Amy Berg has had nothing to do with the handling of the documentary or it’s Twitter since it’s release. The original documentary was rather interesting and respectful towards the victims, something that cannot be said about the current climate fostered by the producers. Browsing at their history, they’ve since devolved into an alt-right sympathizing bunch, as they retweet a number of folks like Alex Jones, Mike Cernovich and Milo Yiannopoulos. They also frequently retweet people involved with Pizza Gate theories, so yeah, they haven’t turned out so well. They previously posted an article from Milo’s website claiming Dan Olsen covered up Justin’s crimes and posted his work info so people could get him fired.
I feel things are going to get ugly fast, because, should you risk your sanity looking at their Twitter feed, they’ve gotten emboldened and this may be leading somewhere real bad.
Power of Thor!Don’t bother arguing with them. Their tactics are to accuse people calling them on their bullshit of being pedophile enablers and a swift block. Drew Mc Weeny of the 80’s All Over Podcast learned this the hard way.
Power of Thor!

He's referring to Johnny Depp.
