Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I'm mad it involved fucking pizzagate of all things.
And I'm mad it involves the Marvel series that I liked the most so far. I loved Guardians and I loved Guardians 2 even more than I loved the first one. And the fucking pizzagate guy brings it all down?
He already apologized for this shit ages ago and has clearly become a better person.
Do we as a society believe in second chances or fucking not???
I'm so mad.
Ugh. Ugh and a half. Ugh and three quarters. That's a good summation of my feelings right now. I mean Gunn's tweets from years ago were trash and I understand Disney's decision but still, given that he directed my favorite Marvel movie ever and is pretty much the reason why I got into the MCU...ugh.
On a lighter note, thinking about who should replace him... it's between Taika Waititi and Ryan Coogler. I just think they're among the most trustworthy active directors under Marvel Studios at the moment. Maybe if Captain Marvel turns out to be awesome then I could see the team behind that taking the helm. I love my cosmic a-holes dearly.

What changed is that back then the discussion was about questionable tweets which could be read as homophobic or sexist. This time around someone who really wanted to take James Gunn down put together a list of tweets in which James Gun "jokes" about raping children.
There are also allegations made of him having connections to a new paedophile, but knowing from were the allegations are coming from, I suspect that this is most likely a "two ships pass the same place in the night at different times" situation.

I don't think we do in this day and age. Court of public opinion and all that.
At least in Gunn's case nobody credible has spoken out against him yet - so Disney might have dropped him, but he's not totally out of work.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!

I'll put it simply and as clearly as possible because this shit is insane.
Pizzagate is the conspiracy that there was a child sex trafficing ring in the basement of some random pizza place (I believe it was in Philly?) that was funded by Hillary Clinton. Or she was involved somehow. That part gets... messy. Anyway, this conspiracy took off and ruthlessly attacked the pizza place until one day a guy with a gun charged the restaurant to free the children.
The pizza place didn't even have a basement.
The man we've been discussing is someone that a certain controvercy we're not really allowed to talk about referred to as a "based lawyer" and he also offered legal advice to Fred Brennan, owner of 8chan, which is an ACTUAL Child Porn site with tips on grooming and abduction.
This whole fucking thing is a goddamn mess.

Some things are so gross that they become difficult to handwave away with "He was a different person then!"
Saying that it made him "extremely happy" to watch a monkey sexually assault a child actor is exactly the kind of thing Disney does not want associated with their brand.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. When the tweets were made likely doesn't matter much to Disney. Once they're out there and going around with people talking about them, most people won't bother to check dates.

This song needs more love. What it boils down to is that actions have consequences and people will judge you on them. "I was young and stupid!" is not an excuse. If you want to post things to a public forum like "I like when little boys touch me in my silly place," then you don't get to work for Disney. Ever.
They aren't going to just take you at your word years down the road that you totally grew out of that harmless pro-rape pedophilia phase. What you say and do is directly reflective of who you are as a person.
There are seven billion people in this world. They can find a director who doesn't endorse rape and pedophilia.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.For what it's worth, modern society is also souring on the "Just a Joke!" defense. Every offensive and harmful position imaginable has been defended with "It was just a joke."
Jokes are funny because people, on some level, agree with the sentiment behind them. A joke is a sincere message told in an absurd fashion.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I gotta agree.
If he regretted saying them (back then and now) that's good, but he shouldn't have said that in the first place.
While the way it got brought out (someone with an agenda) was shitty, it's still on him for saying it.
I just hate that we won't see how he'd have completed his run on the Guardian's films.
One Strip! One Strip!I'm with Slimcoder, as those tweets are the kind of thing that, even back then, are Dude, Not Funny!. I've made some off-color jokes elsewhere in the past, but nothing to this level.
You don't have to agree with the idea presented in the joke to laugh at it, its humor can come from exactly representing the idea as absurd and untenable but also a real opinion people have. To see the words alone of someone as a window into their secret inner evil seem to me a conjecture from the onlookers.
In the case of Gunn specifically, it seems pernicious to me, not because it is somehow okay for him to say them, but because he disavowed them already. He didn't deflect or push it on somebody else. It is an understandable business decision, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.
I'm not going to disagree that those tweets are godawful. If he had made those yesterday, fuck him. If he's reformed and a lot better and more aware of a person and not that fuck boy he was... I guess maybe I just, being in a fraternity, I deal with a lot of immature people who say shitty god awful things that I know they'll regret and become better people in a couple of years.
Like, I remember some friends who said some PROFOUNDLY racist and homophobic bullshit in high school. I wanted to punch their lights out bad. Those comments are also now an extreme embarassment to them today and they're horrified at the slightest reminder of it.
I do think its odd where Disney draws the lines on these things. Director who has apologized for offensive "jokes" he made over a decade ago? Fire him. Racist woman gets a revival of the tv show named after her? Don't fire her until the racist tweets just go that one step too far. Actor who is profoundly cantankerous to deal with on set, refuses to learn his lines, and is wrapped up in a pretty big controvercy of domestic abuse? GIVE HIM ALL THE FILM FRANCHISES!
There's an inconsistency here.
And I do worry about Guardians 3 since Gunn has been so heavily involved in the previous two and really putting passion into them that... switching hands after two solid installments is a red flag to me.
...Shouldn't ask. Gonna.
Who?
One Strip! One Strip!

What bothers me most on this situation with Gunn is that these tweets had already come to light years ago, and he had already apologized for it back then. So what changed? What I can see is that last time it was an LGBTQ+ group complaining, while now is a dangerous alt-right conspiracy theorist. And it is disturbing Disney decided to listen to the later, not the former.
