Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Fair enough.
You gotta be even handed on this. T'is a shame we won't get to see how he'd have finished things, but that's life.
I'm sure he'll spend the rest of his life kicking himself over this. He knows he screwed up bad, but at least he's not trying to spin it or act like he didn't do anything wrong...
...right?
One Strip! One Strip! So this is interesting
. There's apparently debate though whether it was actually commissioned by Marvel or just a fan script. But I've never heard of the Black List taking fan scripts before.
If true it may suggest Tony doesn't die, but retires after Avengers 4.
I don't agree at all with the "shame but this is how it's gotta be" attitude. The only reason this is back in the public eye—six years after Gunn offered a blanket apology for the tasteless things he wrote over the years—is because a piece of garbage like Mike Cernovich, who merrily writes about how date rape doesn't exist and how a woman should have given him a handy 'cuz his junk itched, weaponized outrage over this.

It was more to do with his blog then
, but I'm pretty sure that's where the bulk of his writing was.

Finally did some homework on this Mike guy and discovered some choice quotes. My favorite one has to be: "To beat a person, you lower his or her social status. Logic is pointless." I've seen people dodge logical fallacies or rationalize them, but this is the first time I've actually seen someone outright endorse using fallacies.
Didn't mean to imply that. If I were that kind of person I'd probably hate Full House and Roseanne.
What I meant was I never got into them so I'm not looking at Guardians Vol 3 like, "aw man, this is going to suck without Gunn involved."

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!So he was already called out on them (btw, one of the jokes which got him this time was from 2011, this article is from 2012), apologized but didn't think it was a good idea to delete those jokes but instead allowed them to stay on the internet? Honestly, if I feel really uncomfortable about what I published in the past, I remove it if possible.
The only thing I was waiting for was Gunn to say that he regrets all the stupid things he's said, him having already said such a thing years ago is better than I expected. Give Gunn his job back. Also, regardless of context, fuck Mike Cernovich.
About that Ironheart script: I am 100% down for a Riri Williams movie. So super down that I even pitched my own idea for it a long time ago. Make it, Marvel. Ignore that some people apparently don't like her in the comics, people didn't like Civil War either, and the MCU salvaged that.
I'm not sure I give autor theory enough weight that I think Guardians needs James. These films are collaborative efforts, and he doesn't have sole writing credits.
However, I know James kept dropping hints that Phayla-Vell would be in the third film, and I'm worried who ever replaces James won't have the clout in Disney to convince them a lesbian space alien paladin who's banging Drax'a believed dead daughter is film worthy.
Surely there are much worst directors than Rian for the job.
I think the hypothetical worst director for Gog 3 would be someone who has poor sound design, a bland colour pallet, is really poor at handling family dynamics, and generally makes everything really conventionally heterosexual.
Heck, who the flip did Disney hire to direct Pirates of the Caribbean Five, because that film ticks all those awful check boxes.
Aaaaaand fired.
Edit: Ah, it was already mentioned. I didn't see that.

He also made the following comments on Thursday
:
It’s not to say I’m better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger. My days saying something just because it’s shocking and trying to get a reaction are over.
In the past, I have apologized for humor of mine that hurt people. I truly felt sorry and meant every word of my apologies.
For the record, when I made these shocking jokes, I wasn’t living them out. I know this is a weird statement to make, and seems obvious, but, still, here I am, saying it.
Anyway, that’s the completely honest truth: I used to make a lot of offensive jokes. I don’t anymore. I don’t blame my past self for this, but I like myself more and feel like a more full human being and creator today. Love you to you all.
I don't know, I've seen Marvel Studios play it safe, and it gave us Doctor Strange, which was... meh.
Meanwhile, when Marvel let's its directors takes risks it gives us Guardians of the Galaxy, The First Avenger, Ragnarock and Iorn Man 3 which, yes, was divisive, but didn't damage the franchise in anyway and made a billion dollars.
Marvel tends to work well when it's unexpected. Which is possibly not true for Star Wars. (I think this is because Marvel comics are a lot more open to reinterpertation than Star Wars)

He tweeted that way until he got hired by Disney so it might simply be that he knew that his new employer wouldn't appreciate this kind of humour..if he had been smart, he would have deleted the older stuff, too, just to be save.
I am very unhappy about the notion that we will lose his talent for the MCU, and I don't like how the whole story broke. But the situation being how it is, Disney can't afford to keep him on. Plus, there can't be a rule for people I don't like and a rule for people whose work I happen to enjoy.
