Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

So, with Agents of SHIELD now on hiatus until Summer of 2019, it's only Luke Cage and Cloak and Dagger coming on TV for the rest of the year, right?

Speaking of Marvel t.v. shows, weren't the New Warriors supposed to be getting a series from Freeform?

Freeform isn't buying it, it's being shopped around still, last we know is that it's still a thing and that a recent scare about it being cancelled was a false alarm and the creator says it's still alive. They might put it on a streaming thing, is what people are suspecting.

Yeah...like Damage Control? Sorry, I believe it when I see it.

At least Cloak and Dagger looks good so far and has positive early reviews for its first episode.

Difference is that Damage Control didn't have a pilot, cast, and a showrunner who explicitly said that it wasn't dead. Last we heard is that New Warriors is alive and well and is still being shopped around, so there's still something going on. We don't know what yet.

Again, I believe it when I see it.

Most Wanted wasn't picked up, the guy behind New Warriors, again, has said that the show isn't dead. It's different.

I still want Power Pack so freakin' bad. The last time Marvel brought up the idea of using them was in like 2013, so it's not happening any time soon, but I want it.

I wouldn't mind a Moon Knight show.

Wait, no, spoke too soon about the Power Pack. Per The Other Wiki:

In 2000, Marvel Entertainment entered into a joint venture agreement with Artisan Entertainment to turn at least 15 Marvel superhero franchises into live-action films, television series, direct-to-video films and internet projects. These 15 franchises included an adaptation of Power Pack. In September 2017, Marvel Studios announced that plans to introduce Power Pack into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with their own film are in development. Jonathan Schwartz, an executive producer on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, will oversee the project, with the plot being described as "a Spy Kids-like story".

I actually don't want any new Marvel shows just yet. Unless they have a really, really good idea for one.

You know, I'm super fine with Power Pack being Spy Kids-esque and being worked on by the Guardians people. Considering they get their powers from a magical space alien horsey, the Guardians flair might be the only way that would work.

Another plus of a Power Pack movie would be to have the first pansexual character in the MCU. Granted, Julie Powers is probably going to be 10 in the film, so she probably won't be aware of her own sexuality yet, but that can be saved for sequels. Hell, her particular brand of super-speed even comes with a rainbow trail. If Marvel plays their cards right (even if they don't, Tumblr would probably do it anyway), they could turn Julie Powers into their LGBTQ+ icon.

Blade seems like it would be pretty budget friendly as long as most vampires have basic powers

And making vampires a faceless evil threat is less fucked up than doing the same with Asians

Also you can get some good fantastical allegory with vampires

I am still not buying into the notion of f... vampires in the MCU.

We have demons and aliens and magic dragons with Phoenix down bones but I guess that doesn't necessarily mean vampires exist

Vampires are extremely plausible in the current status of the MCU, particularly after Doctor Strange hurled the idea that magic operates underground in it.

Plus, I'm sure you can derive a meaningful social metaphor from blood-sucking parasites who prey on the poor and the weak.from the shadows.

Power Pack is an interesting idea, also, because it turns the idea of "lighthearted kid adventures" on its head: the Power Pack are plucky kids with powers, but intentionally deal with some seriously traumatic stuff.

Tonewise, i keep thinking of the new Lost In Space series.

They've said Spy Kids-esque, so I wouldn't bet on anything too dark. It'll probably have a few moments, but I'm imagining a PG-rated Guardians of the Galaxy.

Does the MCU own the rights to Namor? It would be a fun side-story to see him team with Dr. Strange and the Hulk, kind of as a shout-out to the founding members of the comic book Defenders.

Swanpride Since: Jun, 2013

[up] It's complicated....the right might be back with Marvel by now if the Disney lawyers did their job, but nobody really knows.

I think it's the case that Marvel has rights to Namor, but any project that utilises the character is contractually obliged to have certain producers/cast/crew attached to it.
