Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I feel like in his own movie Marvel was trying to copy what made their other films work rather than embrace the character they were adapting (the same mistake DC made with Green Lantern years ago, though not quite so catastrophic), and now that it didn’t work out quite as well as they hoped they’re course correcting.
That's probably the justification the studio has for all of that unnecessary humor, trying to "make them relatable." But it comes at a cost of harming audience respect for the character. Strange's "wailing child" moment isn't even from his perspective, but from Mordo and the Ancient One. We don't actually see him reaching the absolute lowest level of despair, the scene of him telling off Christine and left alone against the window does a much better job of that. You can mix humor and character growth, but you need to stick with the character.
They simply had a terrible writing team for his own movie....depending on in which direction they go next they might simply put Marcus and Mc Feely on the next one, if they aren't busy with another project. Or at least give them the script to look over.
Also, I noticed that they have now a "magic coordinator" (or something like this), so I guess they will have a unit which really has a sense for how to put together magical fights in the future.
The single worst MCU joke is the one right after Nebula's backstory speech in Go TG 2 (havent seen Ragnarok yet) which undermines a part of the movie that was already not that great.
"And when the last law was down and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, the laws all being flat?"...
There was a transphobic joke in...
Oh right. When he said he thought that female soldier was a woman.
...ok.
One Strip! One Strip!Yeah, Tony makes a really gross transphobic joke towards Rhodey in the first Iron Man that relies on the "trap" stereotype, something about Rhodey sleeping with a trans woman during a spring break. I get it, it was in 2008, but upon rewatch that just really hurt to watch.

This song needs more love.

I don't have any problem with the humor of Strange falling over when the door opens. My problems with the comedy in Doctor Strange are the forced attempts at humor in Kamar-Taj (Mordo and the wi-fi password, Strange's multiple quips at Wong) and Strange's cape acting up in the Sanctum Sanctorum.
In general my problem is more that Stephen Strange works better with a very dry and casual comedy rather than quipping. Hell, he's this way in Ragnarok and Infinity War, which makes him downright odd in his own film.
