Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Anyway the worst Elder is the Stranger
He wears a picture of his own mustache on his shirt
His only redeeming quality is that he's secretly a million small people formed into a giant man
However he is indirectly responsible for Toad's "Entitled to Wanda's love" stints as the Toad King so there's no redeeming him

. . . Agree. To think that guy was going to be a Bigger Bad for the X-Men.
So. Idle thought: Dr. Strange.
One thing I've talked about in the past with the Doctor Strange film was that I really wish they’d set Strange’s crippling in phase 1. They should have had the early scenes of him getting his hands broken and seeking out Kamar-Taj take place before the Battle of New York changed the world.
There’s a lot of speculation that the Air Force guy whose spine was broken that Strange turned down a chance to operate on was Rhodey in Civil War. It should have been one of Justin Hammer’s test subjects from Iron Man 2.
What this would do, is it would provide Strange with several years for his montage to take place in, making his role in the rest of the film much more reasonable by letting him become an experienced practitioner instead of a startlingly talented new guy.
After seeing Ragnarok and Infinity War, I maintain that this should have been the angle, because both of those films use a version of Strange that is closer to how he is in the comics than in his origin film. The Strange that we’ve seen in his last two appearances is clearly an expert practitioner, highly trained and experienced with no question as to his qualification to be the Sorcerer Supreme. He carries himself with a professionalism and mastery of his craft that feels appropriate to the character, but unearned by his actual film.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I recall Word of God said it WAS the latter and not Rhodey, but the movie itself gives no clue as to when it takes place in the MCU timeline. I guess Wong mentions the Avengers once and that’s it.

Yeah, the Doctor Strange timeline is pretty open-ended. All we really know is that Strange spends enough time learning magic that he's able to hold his own, but not so much that he's able to match people like Wong who have been doing it for decades. The only real hint we have is his ex-girlfriend's reaction to seeing him when he teleports back into the hospital — she's surprised, but not completely out of her mind, which suggest that he probably hasn't been missing years... but that's just a guess, really.
There's also no indication about the time gap between the end of Doctor Strange and the beginning of Thor: Ragnarok, so it's possible that all of Doctor Strange takes place during Phase One and he spent the intervening years honing his skills and guarding the New York sanctum.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. If you wanted to lazily justify it, you could argue that Strange took a convenient opportunity to level grind. During Infinity War.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersThe one thing I'm unsure of is Sitwell mentioning Strange in Winter Soldier as one of the targets of Project Insight. I'm not sure if they're targeting Stephen Strange the surgeon or Stephen Strange the wizard.
This song needs more love.My theory
Once while Dr Strange, surgeon supreme, was giving an interview about some surgery he had done, he turned to the camera and said apropos of nothing "Also Nazis really suck and neo-Nazis also really suck and fascists really, really suck. If there was a secret fascist conspiracy at the heart of the US government, I would punch it in the face."
And Hydra is like "You wot, mate?"
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI figured they were just targeting him because he's a brilliant neurosurgeon. Fascists despise the intelligent. Their ability to control a regime depends on keeping the people too uneducated to find fault in the controls placed on them.
An anti-intellectual cultural swing is a typical sign of a descent into fascism, authoritarianism, or other oppressive systems that depend on neutralizing or suppressing anyone smart enough to question the Official Narrative. Those who seek a regime of dominance and control always turn against the intellectual community.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.She was an Avenger originally in the comics
At the absolute last minute right before she went off into space with her tree husband even though she had been hanging around helping the Avengers and sleeping st their house the whole time
Right before she left them they declared her an honorary Avenger

Yeah, as Elders go, "Guy who cultivates life in the universe" makes more sense than "Guy who obsessively desires to own all the things" or "Patron god of compulsive gambling".
