Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

How do you feel it compares to Age of Ultron?

As someone who loves Age of Ultron and thinks it is the best MCU film... Infinity War just invalidated that previous statement. Infinity War is legitimately one of the best films I've ever seen, and it is easily the best MCU film.

I feel it is hard to judge Infinity War just yet..

That's fair. It is new, and new things do tend to generate stronger opinions while they're still new.

Not to mention, that beforehand, Infinity War was supposed to be a two-parter and despite the backtracking they made when everybody started hating 2-parter movies (thanks for nothing, Divergent series), the movie really felt like a part 1 to a much bigger story.

The Box office estimate are out...ladies and gentlemen, the audience assembled and broke records left and right. Infinity war now has the highest opening weekend of all time, both international and domestically. Early estimates are 250,000,000 at home, 630,000,000 worldwide...meaning as of this weekend the movie is a win for the studio, despite the high production cost.

[up] Millions, naturally. Sorry, corrected it.

Is the 630 million including the 250 million domestic, or is the grand total projected to be 880 million?

Swanpride Since: Jun, 2013
#85911: Apr 29th 2018 at 11:54:07 AM

[up] worldwide means domestic plus international market...it's the overall number. Otherwise the result would be crazy considering that the movie hasn't been released in China yet.

It premieres in China next week, but I have a friend who has informed me that bootlegs are already out on the streets in Beijing as of yesterday/this morning (time zone travel be weird)

Also there’s a shitty cam copy up on pornhub.

That said [up] Black Panther did hit the billion mark without China, though it also wasn’t in just a week.

So yeah this might as well be Avengers: Infinite Money

Yeah, 630,000,000 is still an absolutely bonkers number. To put it into perspective, that's only 30,000,000 less than the entire box office earnings of Justice League.

Even if its RT score is lower, people seem to be enjoying it much better than AOU. Would make more sense for it to maintain its high box office in comparison. In hindsight AOU's relative failure may be less fatigue and just that Whedon didn't make all that great of a movie in the eyes of many.

Heck just from what I've seen, it seems to be more widely beloved than TFA (er, the Star Wars one).

Huh. I could've sworn someone said it was still in the 90s recently. Makes sense, I thought it was a decent movie with some severe flaws so for 25% of critics to be turned off by it is about right.

Guess I was thinking of the score for the original Avengers.

Domestically, possible (though not probable) if you don't control for inflation; certainly not going to happen if you control for inflation. For example Titanic made over $1 billion domestically if you control for inflation.

Globally (you can't control for inflation globally) - possible, but it's a long shot. Avatar made over $2.7 billion, which is a pretty high target.

[up][up] Avatar made 700 mil domestically alone, with 2 billion made oversea. There is no way Infinity War will surpass it.

[up] It actually a pretty common problem on the site. Because of its, eh, main content, thousands of videos are upload everyday as well as the lax content moderation of the site. Among other films: The Big Sick, the entire first arc of Hamilton, every Star Wars movies, Zootopia
