Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I thought the jokes in Got G 2 were overall worse but most of the first one's landed for me.

Agreed on the humor especially on repeated watchings. The Mary Poppins joke wasn't all that great to begin with and only gets worse every time I watch the movie. Taserface was tired before the first watching was even done.

Okay I can accept that much of the humor in Vol. 2 isn't that good (the fucking toilet and sex jokes are gross) but that Mary Poppins joke is awesome.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

For me what makes the moment isn't the joke itself, but Quill's reaction: he doesn't tell Yondu who Mary Poppins actually is because he doesn't want to spoil the moment, so he lies to Yondu to make him feel better.

I mean it was a nice scene, I just don't think the joke itself was particularly strong is all.

To clarify, I'm just talking about the "I'm Mary Poppins y'all" line. Yondu floating down on an arrow like her is awesome.

The emotional beats were better anyway.

Yondu's death & funeral was Goddamn beautiful.

Back from Infinity War.

It was certainly a war of an infinite nature. Not gonna say any more about it, but hot damn was it awesome.

It's a funny thing with Got G 2. I SHOULD be put off more by some of its issues (certain jokes not landing even though I like them more than others do, mood whiplash), but I can't bring myself to not love the movie to bits. Just some really, really fantastic highs in there, particularly Yondu's sacrifice and funeral...actually most everything to do with Yondu come to think of it. One of the best characters in the entire MCU I swear, and it took just one movie to manage that.

The GOTG movies' humor is really not my cup of tea (too gross, too on the verge of Too Inappropriate for my liking) but I loved how GOTG Vol 2 nailed its emotional beats, which more than made up for the humor for me.

When we're done, there won't be anything left.

While a lot of GOTG 2's humour did fall flat for me the things that really bother me about the film are more serious stuff.

I'm fine with GOTG 2's humor because I'm all for crude humor.

It was balanced out with a great villain Ego the Living Planet.

Going to see it tonight, see you all on the other side.

That I said [up] I really, really hope that you aren’t trying to be coy about something that happens. People who do that are never as subtle as they think they are, and what you just posted makes me think that I’m going to see someone or some city full of people or something get incinerated.

Sooner or later it was going to happen,it's going to get harder and harder to keep the spoilers out as more people see the film

Which is why I must remind everyone that we do have a separate thread for infinity war spoilers, which can be found here

Don't click the above link unless you want to be spoiled, you have been warned.

You know, I'm proud of how well this thread has been doing with not spoiling Infinity War. Usually, I have to duck out of here 2-3 weeks before the movies come out until I see the film in order to avoid getting spoiled.

Having the second discussion really helps...and I think nobody here really wants to pull a Forbes.

Hopefully next time around Disney doesn't show the movie AT ALL, so that nobody can spoil anything before opening day....screw the critics. The people who want to watch the movie will do it anyway. And screw marketing, too. Don't show anything from the movie, just remind everyone that this is the movie they HAVE to see.
