Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Keep in mind that what we see of young Hank isn't at his best either.

His wife had just recently 'died' and he found out that the friend he trusted Howard Stark was trying to steal his invention.

We tend to see the Pyms at their worst.

With the universe (finally) getting wider rather than taller, it would definitely be a good way to give small but strong amounts of attention to certain characters while not necessarily giving them big projects.

I'll be going to Infinity War in a few hours myself.

Not gonna post in the spoiler thread, though, unless I have any burning questions that need answering.

I'd love to see a One Shot in which Korg and Luis are are roomies.

Speaking of Korg, two clever and cool observations about him I read on Reddit. So in connection with his "rock paper scissors" comment, joke, they noted that his rebellion failed because he didn't print enough flyers. Which means that paper beat rock. Additionally, he accidentally crushed his buddy Meek. Which means that rock beat scissors.

Just got back from Infinity War. It is easily the best Avengers movie.

I was planning on seeing it tomorrow, but the tickets were sold out. How long until people will be posting spoilers here? I probably won't be able to see it for about a week or so.

I awas always a big fan of the one shots and think it was a crime that they stopped after Iron Man 3. Team Thor shorts were very satisfying though.

I've been thinking about Avengers 5, and if they do do a New Avengers storyline, who I'd want to be on the team?

I'd go for a team of six. And I'd probably have no founding Avengers. Have one legacy character for each of the big three, so Rhodey, Sam, and I guess Valkyre? And then that leaves three more spots, so, Wanda, because I love her and want her to have magic twins so we can get a Young Avengers all ready. You'd have to have Carol because, duh, she's kind of a big deal.

And I guess that leaves one spot, which could go to any one of Parker, Scott, or Hope. I might just be fearless and introduce Jen Walters as She-Hulk completly out of the blue. She's a really iconic Avenger and her absence in the MCU feels really weird. Even more. So than the F4 or X-Men, because the MCU is so Avengers focused.

GOTG 2 was good, but not as good as the original. The writing landed a bit too far on the "wacky hijinks" side for most of the movie and then overcorrected to too serious for the climax. The great thing about GOTG 1 was that the writing felt natural — the humor felt like it was just the characters being themselves, not deliberately trying to entertain the audience. A lot of the writing in GOTG 2 felt much more forced. It was still funny, just not as smooth about it. Stuff like Rocket and Yondu making messed-up faces from jumping too fast, or Groot being bad at following instructions, were cheap, dumb laughs, while the first movie's writing was a lot more clever.

GOTG 2 also suffered because the supporting cast wasn't nearly as good. GOTG 1 had some great minor characters — the Nova Corps people, the Collector and his assistant, Ronan's lieutenant, they were all great. GOTG 2 had the Sovereign (who worked for the cold open, but were too one-note to stay interesting for the whole movie), Yondu's crew (who could have been more interesting, but get unceremoniously killed off), and Mantis (who's more of a plot device than anything else).

Not a whole lot more to say about it than that, really. It was a fun ride but doesn't manage to reach the level of the original.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

I feel like I'm the only person here who really didn't like the humor in Guardians of the Galaxy all that much at all, to the point that even their scenes in Infinity War which is by a different set of writers still rubs me the wrong way in terms of obnoxiousness.
