Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'm not sure how innocent Scott is. He is literally guilty of the crimes he was arrested for and in the backstory he got caught because he got careless.

And then when he got out of jail and it seemed there were no other options, he decided to rob an old man he didn't know when his redeeming quality is that he always robbed people that deserved it.

It just goes to show that the prison system and Dairy Queen encourage recidivism.

That might have been a good way to better tape over the cracks between Edgar Wright's 'lol what women' script and the revamped one Marvel built on top of it.

You also wouldn't have gotten the trope where a woman who should be capable of doing the Thing has to train a man to do it instead.

I mean he doesn't need to be the expendable guy for a weird old man with overprotective issues. He could have chosen to stay in jail.

Its not a great choice but it is a choice.

Because he did the crime again and this time it wasn't 'these people are robbing their customers' it was 'but he's got so much money and I have so little'

While this is true, the mass consensus of morality hasn't quite gotten to this point yet.

My issue with Hope is she basically is furious at her father for not letting her be a superhero but never really tries to go around him...or just calls the Avengers or cops on her own. She also is the one who pushed Daddy Pym out of the company.

To which any and all moral superiority there goes flying out the window since that put a terrorist in place.

There's a more cynical and IMHO better movie where Hope is the star and it has her having allied with Cross in hopes of getting superpowers of her own, unwittingly setting the plot in motion because she sided with him to achieve her dream of superpowers.

[up]That dosent mean Scott is not a nice guy or a good guy, it just mean he is dumb.

I mean, he got into airport fight which it didnt involve him in any way whatsoever and he got into jail as criminal......AGAIN.

Scott is....not a smart man. at all.

[up] My God do you complain about everything? Cause thats literally what you do.

My issue with Hope is that she was an asshole for a lot of the movie. Hard to feel sympathy for her, especially after calling the cops on Scott.

I don't think it's about specifically wanting to be a superhero

She could have stolen the suit from Hank if it was

It was about Hank pushing her away since Jan's 'death' and pulling in some felon rather than trusting her

As for outsing Hank initially I'm pretty sure that she didn't know he was a 'terrorist' at the time and I'll assume there wasn't any way to oust Cross within the company for some reason

[up][up][up]Well, yeah is kinda what I do because it bother me.

[up][up]Pretty much, while Hope was waaaaaay to abrasive, she have very good reasons.

Actually, the fact she is so abrasive is probably something she pick up from her father.

I didn’t find Hope unlikable, because she had a good reason to be bitter towards the other characters. Usually “the jerk” in MCU films tends to be (both heroically and villainously) the “smug a-hole who thinks everything he does is great and no one can match his specialness”. Which is a mold pretty far from where Hope was.

After keeping Hope out of the super action for the first movie, I'm pretty hype about The Wasp and Ant-Man

Only problem with naming someone Hope is that if they mess up they become known as No Hope or Hopeless

[up][up]....Ok, now THAT is hilarious.

Granted I always imagine her as somewhat of a bully in her youth, not for anything bad with her but having her father personality....

Bear in mind that Hope's current prickliness is after years of emotional neglect and mostly toward Scott and Hank.

She may have friends that she's actually nice to.

[up][up]Maybe but for what we see of Hank in his youth, she does shared that with is father.

I mean, is nice to see when a father and their sons actually share things in comon, is nice chararterization.

Hope didn't "just expect it". She is genuinely the best for the job...she knows the company, is able to do hand to hand combat and she can already control ants. Add to this that they are on a tight schedule, I can't think of anyone better.
