Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Okoye is devoted is to Wakanda as a nation. She's obviously quite fond of T'Challa and the royal family and dislikes Killmonger, but she feels that she has to honor Wakandan traditions since technically Killmonger won the kingship fair and square (or so they thought).
However, spends the rest of the film seeing Killmonger repeatedly prove that he doesn't give a shit about Wakanda, its people, or its traditions, and seeing him blatantly disregard the ceremonial succession battle rules at the end was all it took for her to side with T'Challa, who was technically still king at that point anyways since Killmonger's whole coronation and rule at that point was fundamentally illegitimate.
This is all pretty clearly shown and demonstrated in the film.

Also, Disney have marvel, ergo it is a Disney movie too
.
" I get that might make it difficult to tell some of the more whimsical/"fun" stories those characters might be known for however."
I actually like that of Netflix seen I feel Marvel got adverse feeling of going for grittiness, and Phase 3 have just ramp that up with Ragnarok and Homecoming.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"I think it's also important to note Killmonger is racist as fuck. I don't mean just against white people but against Africans.
While you could argue the guy arguing for "racial justice" is the villain, he's very clearly the guy with the most disdain for Wakandans and the most representative of the militarily industrial complex as well as running on White Savior logic.
Or in this case Western Savior.
Killmonger fully expects when he arrives in Wakanda, takes over, and shames them that they'll follow his lead and is confused then angry at the fact the Wakandans see his claims as not just wrong but nonsensical.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. His father was kind of planning mass terrorism too. T'Chaka's call to kill his brother arguably was no different than any guy who found out a close associate was planning to draw his people into war.
I.e. the same as his son.
Wakanda didn't intervene globally but if you start as a CIA operative and American Special Forces guy, are we really going to take him as correct with, "You should be intervening more in the world?"

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Yes yes he grew up in a tough neighbourhood and was orphaned. That doesn't justify being a massively smug megalomaniac with designs on world conquest. It also doesn't raise a lot of sympathy at all for him.
There are lots of little asshole things he does in the movie that just piss me off, like him condescending to a museum curator about African artefacts that he plans to steal and sell on the black market. Or him murdering his girlfriend so callously.

"And when the last law was down and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, the laws all being flat?"On the prior topic of “why did Killmonger order an uprising in Hong Kong”, my theory is: since China has been involved in recent totally-not-colonialism efforts in Africa, Killmonger is attacking them as a means of securing his power. Ignoring them for lack of a large black population within their borders would mean leaving a major world superpower alone that could easily attempt to attack Wakanda or compete for power in Africa.

On a related note, this is a discussion by Nigerian viewers on the film, where they discuss its politics and what they would do in T’challa’s position of power, from overthrowing African warlords, to creating a pan-African state, to universal passports for black diaspora descendants, to even creating a tv show about the quality of life in Wakanda.

Remember that at the end of the day, what Killmonger really wanted wasn't rebalanced justice, or even revenge on Wakanda specifically. He knew fully damn well the consequences of his actions would be far removed from the afro-utopia he framed it as.
He wanted the world to burn, and feel the same pain he felt in his life.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!

It sounds to me like you formed a picture of Okoye based on your definition of Honor Before Reason, when in fact her adherence to that was pretty circumstantial.
Oh God! Natural light!
