Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Korg talking about how Asgard still has good foundations and they can rebuild, only for it to immediately blow up: that was a good mix of humor into a serious moment.

Korg following that up with something like "never mind" was pushing the humor aspect too far.

[up] Honestly, I could have even lived with it, if they had then lingered on the moment more and had shown Thor grieving. But that they directly went to "hey, we can go to earth" really ruined it for me.

Btw, why do Asgardians think that Norway is somehow the most secure place on earth?

he idea that humour shouldn't be used during serious moments is always going to be weird to me, as I'm from a family of people who tends to use humour to deal with tragedy. Is it entirely emotionally healthy? Probably not. But it happens.

Relative to a film, it's not so much about having the characters try to deal with their situations through humor or serious moments so much as whether the film itself stops the dramatic moment with a joke. One of them preserves the drama and serious nature of the situation, the other undercuts it. It's not like having bathos is always bad but you should be careful about how you do it.

For me (some of those a switchable, it was hard enough to come up with a top three)

Action: The Winter Soldier, Civil War, and GOTG

Story: The Winter Soldier, Civil War, and The First Avenger (What can I say, I love the Cap franchise...but this was truly the hardest category. Honorable mention to Got G Vol 2, which has by far the best dying scene)

Villain: Loki (9.5), Ego and Adrian Toombs/The Vulture (Honorable mention to Hydra in general and Zemo).

Music:

Best use of songs: GOTG Vol 2., and GOTG, Ragnarök

Best score: The Winter Soldier, Black Panther, The First Avenger - honorable mention to Ironman and bot Got G movies

Best Original Song: The First Avenger (come on, it is hilarious).

My honorable mentions as far as villains go would be Ego (who just BARELY missed out on making the top three, barely) and Alexander Pierce.

Zemo deserves some acknowledgment. Determined and effective, clear motive and understandable backstory, just not super showy.

Zemo would be directly below that top 5 for me.

@Swanpride: Zola actually is Swiss in the comics so it's also a Shown Their Work nod.

Killmonger's weird, since sometimes the movie assigns him gravitas he hasn't really earned.

Zemo doesn't do much for me personally. He's not BAD really, but I found him to be rather, eh to be honest.

Also special shout out to Andy Serkis as Klaw as well. He's not an especially deep villain, but wow was he fun to watch.

For all those people still hoping for the symbiote, Tom Holland says Disney and Marvel haven't even discussed it.

I don't hate the Symbiote and Brock, but lets give him a break until they're ready to do it right.

[up][up] That's probably one of my least favourite moments in GOTG, since if Ego hadn't said that his plan would have worked. So Peter doesn't win because deep down he's a good person or because he has a new family in the form of the team. He wins because Ego grabbed the villain ball and started motorboating it.

[up][up]Ego grabbing the villain ball there makes sense though. He's so arrogant and self-important that he thinks Peter is going to be down with his plan no matter what he tells him. That's completely in-character for him.

Not really, he was still vastly More powerfull that everyone there, hell the plot bend down quite a bit to defeating him.

Ego pointing out to Peter about his mother's death is actually something I quite like. Gives Peter closure about Meredith's demise and it suits Ego's character pretty well, because it's clear he says that in a careless way, as if he doesn't really realize the weight of what he has done. It's basically Ego's signifying character trait: He's unable to see things outside of his own perspective (he is named Ego) so he's a tad careless regarding that information.

It's much like Ronan the Accuser in the first film being distracted by Peter's dance-off and losing time making a speech rather than just killing everyone because Ronan is a raging drama queen.

[up][up] What?

That's not related to Ego telling Peter.

Ego telling Peter makes sense, especially since Peter was in Celestial mode so he assumed that Peter no longer had any Earthly attachments only to be proven wrong.

I'd probably put Stane over Pierce just because he had the stronger personality, but that makes sense given their individual backgrounds.

Just out of curiosity - anyone out there think that Malekith isn't the least well developed MCU villain?

I rank Aldritch Killian from Iron Man 3 as below Malekith but they're very close as far as bland and underdeveloped go.

...hmm. I’d say Kaecilius is worse actually. Nothing about him makes any sense. At least Malekith’s motivations are kinda understandable.
