Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

While the Warriors Three should have done more in Ragnarok and Thor should have mourned them, it's hard for me to care because they were never utilized well. Not that the movie shouldn't have rectified that, but I didn't really expect anything from them anymore. Thor's friendship with them was so underdeveloped in the previous movies that it wasn't a particularly jarring flaw to me.

"Say Heimdall, where are Lady Sif and uh those three guys she hangs out with"

"Lady Sif was exiled and the Warriors Three were brutally slaughtered trying to stop Hela"

"What a tragedy! Exile! Well as new cyclopean king I'll see about that"

"Should I arrange a memorial service for Hogun, Fandrell, Vollstag, and the others killed by Hela?"

"Who?"

Odin death feel pretty insincere to me because of Is questionable treatment towards Is sons. From banishing Thor to not properly dealing with Loki, in the end he got away with everything and Is sons ended facing the Fallout for that.

And the movie does have the same mistake of AOU, where serious moments get undermind by joke.

So, I made a spreadsheet for our MCU rewatch group to rank all the movies. We all scored Music, Humor, Action, Story, Villain, Hero, and Ensemble Cast on a 1-10 scale. The spreadsheet then automatically calculated our individual overall scores, and average scores for each category.

Unsurprisingly, Black Panther won overall (9.6), with Winter Soldier in second(9.4) and Civil War in third (9.3). Killmonger won best villain(10) and Ego was second (9.8). Cap and Spidey tied for best hero(10), with T’Challa a VERY close second(9.8). I’m happy to answer any spreadsheet questions, I can’t link it because it’s got my real name from my google drive.

So the three overall worst were Incredible Hulk (2.59), Age of Ultron (3.01), and Doctor Strange (3.4).

The idea that humour shouldn't be used during serious moments is always going to be weird to me, as I'm from a family of people who tends to use humour to deal with tragedy. Is it entirely emotionally healthy? Probably not. But it happens.

I think it’s more about using it judiciously. Whether the moment has time to breathe. For example, Korg’s joke about the foundations being gone now at the end of Ragnarok. The moment/gravity of the situation didn’t get enough space.

Yeah, it is more about the right timing...ie Got G Vol 2 has a lot of funny moments in the finale battle, but they don't detract. They also have some jokes during the funeral scenes, but they are created in a way that they allow you a laugh while you still crying instead of taking you out of the moment, because they are still in the moment. It is hard to explain.

So...which one got the most points for score?

The Sovereign work in my opinion. They are the consequences of Rocket’s jerky behavior. They create conflict within the group as the result of Rocket’s ego.

I think she's referring to the soundtrack itself. The score's score. Which is fun to say.

Part of the issue is that comedy's highly subjective, and what is too much for some people is going to be just enough for others. Ragnarok's comedy didn't really bother me, but I've also only seen the movie once.

Yeah, the soundtrack. Sorry for the confusion.

[up][up][up]Maybe but they are really detach from the main story and it feel they were there to make the fight funny.

You know what? If it is not too much work, I would like to know the top three in each category....and maybe the bottom three or two.

No love for The Winter Soldier? I mean, I know that it is a very different kind of soundtrack, but I happen to adore it. Especially the Winter Soldier theme. It is so effective.

Not much love for Ironman in this group, I see....(Not that I disagree, Cap is my fav, and I am always glad when The First Avenger gets some credit).

Iron Man got an 8.3 overall and scored between 8-9 for every category but humor (7.83, some of the jokes aged badly). It’s a great movie, just outclassed since then (which is great).

Yeah, it would be sad if the first movie were still the best. Marvel had to improve.
