Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I can't wait until Strange tries that line on Thanos, only to be told that the best offer he can make for that Time Stone is $50.

What is it with the Hawkeye hate? I like Hawkeye! Especially in Civil War when he is all "I retire for five minutes and everything goes to sh..."

I never bought into the notion that Hawkeye or Black Widow for that matter aren't "good enough" to be Avengers. Yes, they are more spies than soldiers, but those abilities can be very useful. And especially Hawkeye provides a more down to earth perspective.

[up]Maybe because he's almost useless? I don't find that useless, just that he doesn't much screentime.

I like MCU Hawkeye.

He's not my favorite but he brings his own unique stuff to the cast

Hawkeye's main problem isn't even his lack of powers or choice of weaponry, it's that he's kind of a dull character. He mostly only exists in Avengers as a satellite character to Natasha and has very little presence in the film otherwise. Age of Ultron is the closest he gets to being compelling.

Given the crazy shit comic Hawkeye's done, I'm 100% expecting him to land the final blow in either Infinity War or Avengers 4.

I don't think that Hawkeye is dull either. But then, I like "normal" characters in general. They are more relatable to me.

I actually quite like Hawkeye as well. If anything can be said for Ao U, it definitely fixed him. He's got his own thing going now.

I think Hawkeye's alright. He's not my favorite but his characterization since AoU has been pretty likable. That's one of the few good things that movie did.

Movie!Hawkeye is like one of the few characters completely different from their comic counterpart.

Then again, Comic!Hawkeye quit the Avengers every 5 seconds (including one time, the Scarlet Witch rejected his romances pursuit towards her) and divorced his wife when she didn't save her rapist.

I only know EMH Hawkeye and that was for me a pretty boring character - all snark, little substance - so from my point of view the one in the MCU is an improvement. Better snark, more substance.

I loved EMH Hawkeye

He was such a good foil for Black Panther and Hulk

I thought EMH Hawkeye was pretty bland, too. Also, Hot Take: I hated how EMH drew Tony Stark. He looked like he hadn't slept ever and survived solely on coffee. The EMH artstyle in general is pretty on-and-off. Say one thing about Avengers Assemble, it's a much better looking show, even if the writing is much worse.

I won't agree with that

The character designs may look more realistic but they're stiff and bland

[up][up][up] I didn't dislike him either. His interaction with Hulk was usually fine, but not fleshed out enough (a general problem with the show, btw). There just wasn't much to him. I guess the problem was partly because the show did rely on the audience having at least some background knowledge about the characters, which made it difficult to fill the blanks for characters like Hawkeye.

[up][up] I prefer the design of EMH.

Hawkeye's problem is that he's played by Jeremy Renner, who's a black hole devoid of any charisma.

Meh. I think he’s pretty bland. Apparently Jensen Ackles was a finalist for Hawkeye? I’m kinda mad we didn’t get him instead.
