Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Just watched Thor: The Dark World. Didn't get this far into the MCU before, so this is my first time seeing it.
Thor movies seem to work best when you just turn off your brain and accept it. Why do things happen the way they do? They just do, don't think about it too hard. There's no actual internal logic, but that's okay, you don't have to actually follow anything — the movie will just tell you straight out what's happening and all you have to do is smile and nod, regardless of how much (or how little) sense it makes.
I could spend way too much time on that, starting from the very beginning of the movie. "These are the dark elves. The want to destroy the universe because they existed before it did and they don't like how it's taking up all their nonspace." Okay? Sure, why not. Pretty much the entire movie just keeps going in that vein. Movie makes a declaration. Audience says sure, why not. Dimensional shenanigans leading directly from Earth to the hiding place of the ancient universe-destroying weapon? Sure, why not! Thor is casually worldhopping because the Bifrost Bridge is fixed now? Sure, why not! (Wait, wasn't the whole reason why Thor was separated from Jane because he smashed the Bifrost and didn't have the juice to jump between realms willy-nilly without it? Nevermind, doesn't matter!) These magic science poles can prevent the ancient universe-destroying weapon from destroying the universe? Even though it's specifically stated in dialogue that they're just detection equipment and shouldn't be able to actually influence anything? Sure, why not! We establish in one scene that Thor can spot Loki's illusions now, but in a later scene Loki fools Thor with an illusion? SURE, WHY NOT! The whole movie basically runs on "sure, why not".
Outside the plot making no sense, I still have issues with the Asgardian aesthetic. The movie still isn't sure if they're sufficiently advanced aliens or actual gods. They use what seems to be magic rather than technology, but they also use swords and shields (except the shields have built-in energy deflectors to stop laser guns, and the swords have sparks and stuff emitting from their cutting edges sometimes), even when fighting dudes with laser guns and black hole grenades (who murder the hell out of them, because guns and grenades are better weapons than swords and shields). Asgard has laser cannon AA guns and space fighter jets, but their space fighter jets are also open-topped dragon boats. Like seriously guys, make up your goddamn mind. In other aesthetic notes: the Dark World stuff was dark. Yes, wonderful, thematically appropriate. But it makes it too damn hard to see what the hell is going on. That's bad.
Not a whole lot else to say, really. It was an entertaining enough "turn your brain off and enjoy the smashing" action movie, but it wasn't great even at that, and on any other level it fails miserably. Captain America: Winter Soldier is up next. Like Dark World, I have absolutely no idea what to expect going in. Hopefully this one is less silly.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.I might actually have to strangle you now Adric.
You don't get a pothole. figure it out for yourself if I'm serious or not.
One Strip! One Strip! Why do all of these threads have to turn to murder?
Edit: I get the best page toppers, I swear.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Excuse you, Rob said strangle, not kill. There's a certain degree of ambiguity. We won't know how far he goes until he's done.

Yeah, you're right.
I intend to kill her by strangling her.
See, this must be why I don't seem to have The Dark World the way all beings everywhere seem to.

One Strip! One Strip! Here's a set of questions that's been on my mind: most improved/downgraded MCU sequel, and most pleasant surprise/biggest disappointment?
Half of those are easy for me: Thor: Ragnarok for most improved, and Age of Ultron for biggest disappointment. With the downgraded sequel one it's probably Age of Ultron again, if only because I haven't seen IM 2 or TDW if you wanna compare it to Thor 1 and wager it as an answer. And most pleasant surprise...gonna have to come back to that one later, there's plenty of strong contenders.
On my wave, passing oooooooonI would like to take this opportunity to second Wisewillow's request.

One Strip! One Strip!Florida ain't ready for me! My madness cannot be bound.
One Strip! One Strip!

Kate Bishop is better even with not having appeared in the movies yet. She can shoot five arrows at once.
