Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I was recently thinking about Raimi Spider-Man 1 and found myself annoyed that he let the criminal go because he was personally annoyed at the wrestling promoter. I think it worked better when he stood aside because he had no investment in the situation one way or another. He didn't see how it concerned him because he was big shot entertainment guy why should he do a security guard's job for him?

[up]That was a crappy distraction. The bus driver totally would have looked in the mirror to see what the commotion was and seen Peter.

A hypothetical question here: If they were to adapt Agent Venom would they have to give his backstory including his military service to a different or new character?

I've had two ideas:

One would be to give it to Rhodey, since he is already a veteran with a debilitating injury who wears a black costume. And it would do more to characterize him/differentiate him from Tony by giving him a new and different power set.

Otherwise, I'd keep it with the movie's Flash (which I think would fit with the Ultimate cartoon). My idea was that he would have some positive character development and then get grievously injured protecting his classmates. And then through Tony/Peter pulling some strings, he'd be given the symbiote as an experiment (note- he could either be the first person wearing one or this could be after Peter and/or Eddie wear it).

Kind of an issue though that Eddie is seemingly not going to be a Spider-Man villain or even in the same 'verse really. And I'd expect that movie to bomb.

It wouldn't really be the same if Flash didn't have his military training.

Like it wouldn't make much sense to give a possibly dangerous alien being to a possibly high-school or college age kid just cause he did a brave act. A cyborg prosthetic would be better in that case.

A disabled soldier getting back into service through special methods would make for a good story.

If we had the time for it, I would love a movie progression where minor character Flash - starting out as a bully and and asshole - goes through character development, joins the military, gets wounded and ends it all with a much more mature lease on life. Kind of as a comparison to Peter’s own development, especially if his growth was kicked off by Peter in the first place.

But... yeah, I don’t know if we have the time (even if we do cut out the “Flash gets amnesia and thinks he’s back in high school” ridiculousness). Maybe if the next Spider-Man movie starts with Peter in college, and then goes into him as an adult, with Flash as a background character changing as the movies do.

It's a new continuity so you could do a lot different.

Say, for example, it's Flash Thompson's older brother.

Why invent a brother that the audience is less likely to care about when you have an already established character right there.

If were going with current Flash to become Agent Venom then Tony Revolori is gonna have to get jacked for the role.

Because Flash Thompson is an nonentity in the Homecoming movie?

[up][up] If he's such a nonentity then why would the audience give a crap about his random, previously unmentioned brother? Flash already exists in the universe so there's no reason not to flesh him out.

Sony is already using the symbiotes, the idea can't work for Marvel sadly without their permission.

Just re-watched Age of Ultron. I hate it even more than I remembered. Just an appalling waste of everyone’s time and money and energy. Absolute crap characterization, terrible editing and pacing, an incoherent storyline, miserable lighting, and an overall chaotic mess.

Guardians of the Galaxy, by contrast, has aged very well. Guardians 2 gives it more depth, but the film stands well on its own. FANTASTIC editing and pacing, great use of music, great character arcs for each guardian. Really a fun time.

The film is so goddamn brown and gray in some parts that it reminded me of the DCEU with its own coloring issues. The fight scenes were there just to be fight scenes and lacked any weight. The jokes weren't jokes, they were painfully unfunny and at worst out of character for everyone. Seriously, Whedon has no idea how to write most of these characters, it's insultingly bad. I literally stopped watching partway through out of sheer frustration and decided to listen to a Ween album instead (good album by the way, The Mollusk, classic, 9/10, recommend it to everyone, it's the one with Ocean Man).

They also turned Ultron into a complete pussy in that movie.

Seriously its motherfucking Ultron one of the Avengers greatest & most vile villains, he deserves better.

It's still my favorite film in the MCU. Joss Whedon is one of my favorite working writers and directors, and Age of Ultron is an absolutely fantastically enjoyable film from start to finish. Great pacing, great character writing (honestly, I think Joss did all the leg-work on Natasha, since she's utterly forgettable in the Captain America films), and great lighting.

Yeah, the fight choreography was absolutely terrible. Cinematography of the fight scenes is bad, and the characters weren’t used properly either. None of the fight scenes had any weight or tension. Also, after all the stuff they built up with Hawkeye, he should’ve been the one to die. It would’ve given some emotional resonance. Instead, somehow, the guy with superspeed who we barely know dies, depriving us of both an entertaining character, and of any emotional connection to a character death. Not to mention that the way Quicksilver died was idiotic.

[up] why must you be this way

It's a little something called "subversion of expectations", Hawkeye dying would've been predictable.

[up][up][up][up]

I'd advise against using a gendered insult like "pussy", please. It's kind of sexist.

[up][up][up]

Whedon is a sexist idiot and everything in Age of Ultron pertaining to Natasha is glorifying a blatantly abusive relationship that came right the fuck out of nowhere.

[up]

It's a waste is what it is.
