Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Yes, but DmC also had more interesting setpieces as well.

It's much easier to make crazy surreal imagery in a video game work than it is to do in a live-action movie.

Can we just stop to take a moment to appreciate Drax and Dave Bautista's performance as him?

The scene of Drax talking to Mantis about his family is easily one of my top three (emotional) favorites in the MCU. The other two being Peter trapped under the building in Homecoming and Steve & Bucky’s final dialogue in Winter Soldier (the “you’re my friend”/“you’re my mission” bit)

Seriously, Bautista took a character who very easily could've been one-note and annoying and turned him into one of the best characters in the MCU. Dave doesn't get nearly enough credit for his performance as Drax, and I'm gonna be mad if he doesn't get at least a few good scenes in Infinity War.

Dave Bautista is absolutely underappreciated, as is Drax.

I'm guessing he will going by the fact Gotg vol 1 had a scene Drax pointedly tells that the person he has to avenge himself upon isn't Ronan, but Thanos.

I thought Drax got some of the best reception following GOTG - in a team with a talking raccoon and Vin Treesel, it was a completely nondescript alien who managed to stand out the most.

I wonder if Drax is going to die fighting Thanos.

[up] Maybe not, given that there will be a third Got G film coming up...unless it's an interquel like the second one...sort of.

I thought that Feige and co already confirmed that the deaths in IW would be permanent?

I read it more as, "there will be deaths in Infinity War that will be permanent", not necessarily "all deaths in Infinity War will be permanent". The door's still open for some deaths to be reversible.

Drax's death would make the most sense but I also wonder if they'd seriously alter the dynamic of the team like that. The one I could most see dying is probably Nebula. She has a personal connection with Thanos and I don't think there's much left to do with her in the Guardians films proper (hell, she was already almost killed off in the first movie).

I’m okay with Nebula dying if she gets to have catharsis/revenge on Thanos first.

Nebula is definitely dying. Out of the core guardians (Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Quill and Drax) Drax is the only one I can see dying because of two things A) Big Guy Fatality Syndrome B) He has the least relationships out of any of the main cast (Quill has his UST with Gamora, Rocket and Groot have a bromance going on. Drax just now got Mantis) C) His arc directly relates to killing Thanos.

I can see him dying as a Sacrificial Lion to the Guardians the same way I can see Bruce Banner dying among the Avengers, particularly given he's the one character they can never use for solo movies so he's basically cattle for slaughter. My predictions would be among the Guardians Nebula and Drax die, among the Avengers we lose Hulk, Iron Man and Captain with Thor sticking around as a Retired Badass King of Asgard

If it were up to me, I'd promptly kill Nick Fury and Hawkeye too. Natasha Romanoff: Director of SHIELD.

I saw something on Tumblr yesterday. It was a screenshot of someone's Twitter; their post, and a reply.

OP: The fact that the russo brothers won't give us the title of Avengers 4 because it spoils Infinity War scares the shit outta me!

Reply from the Russos: It should.

Thoughts? I admit I got a bit concerned when someone asked "What if Avengers 4 is called 'The Last Avenger'?" Probably a joke, but...

NO! Don't kill Hawkeye!

He save the universe from the Grandmaster! He saved both the Marvel and DC universes! He deserves fracking respect!

I swear, we need to get some kind of Hawkeye is Awesome Reddit thread or something so we can get more of his feats and accomplishments. Maybe then people will want to see stuff done with him instead of shitting on him.
