Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'm still vouching for a Kraven-Chameleon team up but part of me is still demanding Mysterio.

Drop it.

Not going to lie, while I don't have any love lost for Matt Damon either, a small part of me would find amusement in him playing the same character as he did in Thor Ragnarok as a Spider-Man villain. Like, literally the same character. Loki took a random guy from Earth to be in a play.

He got a taste of being a villain and liked it.

Casting a big name actor as Chameleon is such a meta idea that I can't help but love it. Casting a big name actor like Matt Damon famous for playing seemingly unassuming but actually incredibly badass and capable people would be even more meta.

Also, can we seriously drop it?

Drop it. And don't address me with "man", please.

Anyways, thinking it over, if casting Chameleon with a big name actor works in a meta sense, would casting a smaller actor to play Mysterio also work or something?

Mysterio could also be cool if you work with the whole Hollywood angle.

I know the odds are low but Brian Blessed as Mysterio would be pretty cool.

I feel like Mysterio should be played by an actor who used to be a big name but has since fallen off the radar for one reason or another. None come immediately to mind though.

Casting a small name actor as Mysterio would also have the added bonus of probably not being ludicrously expensive if they want to bring all their baddies together as the Sinister Six someday.

And in the movie itself, would have the plus side of possibly not having an actor who would be insistent on having their face seen all the time and/or the clout to ensure that they do so.

Eh...to be honest I've soured on him as a choice in anything. Wasn't he outed as being another abuser in Hollywood or something?

If not Bruce Campbell (who's still the number one choice) then get some other star who's stereotypically "washed up". Trying to think of one that comes to mind.

To go for an entirely different kind of meta joke, what about Daniel Radcliffe?

Depends on if he uses his natural accent or he goes with an American one.

Or he uses (and intentionally mangles) both, so nobody knows if Quentin Beck is an awful British actor doing a bad American accent, or an awful American actor doing a bad British accent.

[up]x5 Nicolas Cage has not been outed as an abuser in Hollywood. He is, in fact, a supporter of the Me Too movement.

I looked it up, this was the stuff he was arrested for in 2011 where he'd apparently gotten drunk and did some dumb shit. Sounds like a one time thing but I'd seen him lumped in with a lot of the people outed by the Me Too movement.

I'm willing to see him as Mysterio, but Known Unknown's Radcliffe suggestion is starting to sound interesting.

Precisely. And Harry is pretty humble throughout the series while Stephen Strange starts off as a huge asshole and has to be broken down before rebuilding himself.
