Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

If Tony dies we will run out of problems for heroes to solve!

Peter Parker will inherit Tony's mantle as the one who constantly fucks up and creates new problems for his teammates.

I don't want Falcon as Captain America....for two reason:

1. I would rather have him been beloved in his own right as Falcon than him taking the hand-me-downs from another character.

2. Captain America should have a shield. And Falcon would look really stupid with one. His wings already function as one so why the hell should he awkwardly carrying around a shield on top of it? How is he supposed to throw it properly from the air and why should he bother when he already has little guns?

Completely agreed on both points. I could see Bucky taking over as Captain America, though, which I would be fine with.

Did Peter ever create a messed up robot like Ultron in the comics?

He looks just fine with it in the comics.

It's ironic that you should bring up the shield, though. It's actually a recurring plot point in the comics that conservatives instantly hate him and start looking for ways to prove that he's a disgrace to the title of Captain America. His detractors create a hashtag movement demanding he immediately relinquish the mantle called #GiveBackTheShield.

He gets a lot of flak for getting involved in politically-sensitive controversial topics such as illegal immigration, with his detractors insisting that Captain America shouldn't be political and that things like opposing police brutality or being black undermine what his office is supposed to represent.

I don't like Sam taking over for Steve because it implicitly says "the world needs Captain America more than it needs the Falcon" and one of Falcon's things is that he's adamant about being equals with Cap and not his sidekick.

In the comics, he passes on the mantle of the Falcon to an up-and-coming new super. So it really doesn't, actually.

Maybe it should be but it's not

That's also what happened when Ms. Marvel became Captain Marvel, too. An up-and-coming new super got the Ms. Marvel name.

Marvel tends to treat superhero mantles like job openings. Regardless of whether you consider Sam moving from Falcon to Captain America as a promotion or a lateral move, the office of Falcon did not go unfilled for very long.

Captain America is an icon. Passing the mantle is a symbolic gesture, but that’s the entire point. The person behind the shield represents an image of America, and how that person acts reflects the part of America’s soul that they represent.

Steve was the idea of FDR’s America; of patriotism tempered by the perspective of a weak man made strong. A man who fought Nazis and is appalled by modern America’s (and past America’s) sins.

Making Sam Wilson Captain America was intentional social commentary. Why can’t a black man represent the idea of America? Doesn’t America include black communities too? Aren’t their rights important? Yes, Steve has fought for black rights in his career, but it’s very different when Sam fights for black rights.

But why does it have to be Sam? You could create a different black character. DC did something like this when they made Dick Grayson Batman. The issue is he was already Nightwing and a superhero in his own right. Having a non-sidekick abandon their identity to take over for a preexisting character seems weird to me.
