Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

As I've mentioned before, on the one hand it would be super adorable if Peter were flustered because, duh, Peter.

ON THE OTHER HAND.

Okoye: "Remember, don't freeze when you see him."

Shuri: "I never freeze!"

Peter: -Does some insane parkour bullshit-

T'Challa: "Did she freeze?"

Okoye: "Like an antelope in headlights."

Shuri >:(

I'm pretty sure that, in the comics, Peter is one of the relatively few people that Shuri actually likes as well.

If anyone lands the killing blow on Thanos, I want it to be Nick Fury.

Fighting Thanos is the culmination of everything that's happened over the last 10+ years of the MCU, and Fury's the one who started it all by bringing different superheroes together. Add in that he's never really gotten a badass beat-the-bad-guy moment like everyone else has, and that Sam Jackson might not be able to play the part much longer, and it seems like it would be a great sendoff moment for him.

I don't think that Thanos will be defeated in this movie at all. That will happen in Avengers 4.

I'm expecting a big final battle at the end of Infinity War when Thanos realizes that neither he nor anyone else has any idea where the Soul Stone is and he tries to destroy half the universe anyway without the complete set. The superheroes somehow win and Thanos leaves Earth alone. Avengers 4 is about the superheroes and Thanos separately searching the universe for the Soul Stone.

  • Spider-Man: You already got what you came for! Why are you still here!?
  • Thanos: Do you take me for a fool?! The Soul Stone! Where is it?!
  • Iron Man: There's a Soul Stone?
  • Doctor Strange: Don't look at me. He already took my Time Stone.
  • Thanos: Space. Reality. Time. Mind. All of these Stones have turned up here on Earth already. Do you really expect me to believe you don't have the Soul Stone as well?
  • Peter Quill: Look, you're doing some trending, that's neat. But it's not like they knew about the Power Stone either.
  • Spider-Man: There's a Power Stone?
  • Iron Man: Wait a minute, you sent the Mind Stone here. We only even had that one because of you!
  • Thanos: That's fair. But the trend seemed...I mean, four out of six, you can't blame me for thinking...you guys really don't have it?
  • Iron Man: We literally have no idea what you're talking about.
  • Thanos: ...
  • (smash cut to Thanos's ship taking off)
  • Thanos: There's been a terrible misunderstanding!!!

Heh.

So what incarnation of Spidey's costume is your favourite?

Out of the four versions (Raimi version, Amazing 1 version, Amazing 2, and MCU version) I myself rather like the Amazing 2 version. Homecoming is a close second, but Amazing 2 is the closest to classic spidey (what with actually having the web shooters as opposed to the organic webs of Raimi spidey).

I like Raimi's the best. I'll also defend organic webshooters.

From a "just looking at it" Po V, the one form Amazing 2 is the most badass by far. And the most balanced in terms of proportions. But from a "how it works in the movie", the one from Civil War wins by a mile, because it has a good explanation for the changing eyes, which allow the character so much more emotive range.

Amazing 2's costume looks exactly what I imagined the Spidey suit was. Loose breathable fabric, as comfortable as pajamas!

The Rami suit had all this hideous plastic webbing all over it and it looked cheep and like a baseball, looked like it would be really unpleasant to wear.

However I love the textures of the two Tony Stark made MCU suits, they look comfy and cutting edge and I love that the eyes are animated.

Deadpool proved that audiences will accept expressive masks just fine. MCU Spider-Man corroborated it and it's for that reason that the MCU suits take Best Spider-Man Costume for me.

MCU suit is good (in that it's more or less his regular suit with some extra lines), but I don't like that it's basically handed to him by Tony.

Some of Pete's agency was taken away by him.

I prefer it. I never understood how the film’s experience expected us to believe that Peter made such a sleek and professionally embossed costume all by himself in secret.

After five movies of suspension, it’s nice to have one actually address it.

To be fair, his suit's usually not as advanced as the MCU one either. It's usually just a cool costume. That said, we've never been given any indication that Peter has the skillset required for tailoring, so it's still weird.

A case could be made for this being why Aunt May should be let in on the secret, but of all the things she should be informed about, this part might not be one.

  • Peter: Here's my suit. It's got a few rips and tears in it. Thanks for patching it up!
  • May: Is this a bullet hole?!
  • Peter: ...I'll be upstairs.

In case it hasn't already been established in this thread, buckle up, because Infinity War will be 156 minutes long or 2 hours and 36 minutes.

Thus making Infinity War the longest MCU movie since Captain America: Civil War.

Given how big in scale it is, and the ridiculously large cast, they'll probably need the extra time in this case.

Also that's almost exactly the same length that The Dark Knight was ironically.

That's good. Insufficient runtime killed Age of Ultron and even Civil War was buckling at the seams from its cast and Infinity War is also going to need a long runtime if it doesn't want to make anyone feel like a glorified cameo.

Also The Russo's essentially said that if some people aren't happy with some of the screentime for certain characters, well wait until Avengers 4. Which sort of says that, even if they aren't literally "Parts 1 and 2," they are connected nonetheless.

[up] So, by that they mean that the first part will focus the battle on Earth and more of Thanos while the next one will be more space-based and Passing the Torch?
