Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Come to think of it, I think he was operating on like 60-something percent at the end of Iron Man, right? And he surged to 400 percent when Thor zapped him with lightning...

So did Tony only get strong enough to fight Thor because Thor jacked him up with electro-steroids by accident?

Eh, Tony has this habit to let Pepper do the actual killing of his biggest enemies.

Eh, Tony has this habit to let Pepper do the actual killing of his biggest enemies.
Not really. Killian is the only case of this. Tony needed Pepper to turn on the reactor to take out Stane and it was all Tony’s idea to begin with anyway.

So Tony and Rhodes plus Vanko filling in that last bit (he was probably knocking on death's door by that point but he made sure to amp it up to "fucking dead as shit").
Well like with the above, it was Tony’s idea and the only reason Vanko even resorted to that was because he knew he wasn’t long for the world of the living and he wanted to take Tony with him.

Well, what type of super villains would they be if they didn’t eat healthy? Also when do Hela, Ego and Red Skull display lust? And how are Zemo and Kaecillius sloth?

Keep in mind that the meaning of lust had been a bit misused in the context. It fully means "Having a strong desire for something."

Well, what type of super villains would they be if they didn’t eat healthy? Also when do Hela, Ego and Red Skull display lust? And how are Zemo and Kaecillius sloth?

Lust and sloth are more than just sexual desire and physical laziness.

Sexual desire is the most common depiction of Lust, but it really refers to any hedonistic pursuit of pleasure, especially immaterial things like sex, highs, bloodlust, and most pertinently, power. Any villain who craves power simply for sake of being powerful (Hela, Red Skull) falls under Lust. Ego's got it twofold; the satisfaction he craves in being an omnipresent being, and of course his sexual dalliances (even if that was more or less a utility to facilitate the former than a goal in itself).

Sloth also encompasses nihilistic despair, moral apathy, and indifference. Zemo and Killmonger want to watch the world burn because they've given up hope and want to quash everyone else's, and Kaecillius is eager to turn the world over to Dormammammammammammammammammu because he's miserable and sees it as beyond saving otherwise. Few villains actually embody the "lazy bum" aspect of Sloth unless they're the type to sit around on their throne making everyone else do all the work.

Yeah, Tony hasn't killed any of the main villains of the movies he's been in, has he?

He's got loads of minion corpses behind him, though.

I was actually surprised when he apparently switched to using non-lethal rounds against HYDRA in Age Of Ultron.

Come to think of it, post Ultron neither he nor Cap (nor Thor, who also did quite a bit of it in his first two films) kill all that much, beyond robots. It's both implied and stated very blatantly at times that they do so, no doubt, and their enemies murder loads and loads of people onscreen so it's not quite a censorship thing, but maybe there was some kind of a push to make them all more conventionally heroic. Even Guardians conspicuously still includes the obligatory Space Opera "heroes mow down enemy starfighters" scene, but has all of the starfighters be drones...

Actually, do the big three of The Avengers even kill?

In the three Cap films, Red Skull is killed (maybe) by the Tesseract, Pierce is killed by Fury, and Zemo lives. In the three Thor films, Loki lives, Malekith...maybe counts (I guess Thor is responsible for his ship dropping on him?), and Hela is felled by Surtr.

Meanwhile, Scott Lang is responsible for Darren Cross's outright gross death, the Guardians of the Galaxy kill Ronan and Ego (fitting, they're billed as being more antiheroic), Spider-Man doesn't kill Vulture and just turns him in, Vision kills Ultron, and T'challa is sort of complicit in Killmonger's death but ultimately it's Killmonger who chooses to die on his own terms.

See also: Seven Deadly Sins

[up]Greed: desire for stuff because stuff. Lust: desire for stuff because pleasure. Gluttony: desire for stuff to use it up.

(technically, there's sometime an 8th sin: Despair, which I would qualify some practitioners of Sloth under)

As a counterpoint:

Tony: Pride, Greed, Lust, but also Kindness, Temperance, Dilligence

Bruce: Wrath, Envy, but also Humility, Chastity, Charity

Thor: Pride, Gluttony, Wrath, but also Patience, Temperance

Steve: Envy (pre-steroid), Pride (a little bit), Steve's The Paragon, he doesn't exhibit the Sins very often or very much. He does exhibit Temperance, Kindness, Charity, Diligence, and Patience.

Peter Quil: Lust, Sloth, but also Charity, Kindness

Stephen: Pride (pre-accident), but also Temperance

Scott: Sloth? Also Kindness, Patience

Peter Parker: Pride, Envy, but also Humility, Diligence

Matt: Wrath, Lust, but also Charity, Diligence

Luke: Sloth, Pride, but also Charity, Patience

Jessica: Sloth, Lust, but also Temperance

Danny: Greed, Envy, Wrath, but also Charity, Chastity, Diligence

Haven't seen Black Panther, so I wouldn't know what to do with him, aside from Wrath in Civil War. Anyone want to add supporting characters?

[up][up]There's a lot of overlap, and how they vary will... vary from interpretation to interpretation. They're all sins of desire.

Greed is the pursuit (and hoarding) of material wealth such as money or other non-essentials of value. Lust is like greed, but for incorporeal desires like sex, power, visceral satisfaction, thrills, or intoxication/highs. Gluttony is a bit of a tricky one, since excess consumption could fall under the purview of lust. Some interpret it as "greed but for things you actually do need, just not in excess" like food and drink, others interpret it as "greed but for anything that is consumed (literally or metaphorically), and therefore wasted in overindulgence", also like food and drink.

Though [up]'s got a pretty succinct explanation. Not sure I'd qualify Tony Stark under Temperance, though, given that ridiculous party he throws in Iron Man 2. And Steve has some battle-lust, if AOU and Civil War are anything to go by.

Cap notably only has a bodycount of 2 by the end of The Winter Soldier (blasting two mooks with a grenade) if you don’t count his order to shoot down the Helicarriers. This isn’t so in Civil War, where he deals several personally lethal blows, like Goomba Stomping a man’s head into a car, or exposing another enemy to poison gas. Falcon also has had his wing pack upgraded with missiles. Maybe being independent from SHIELD means he doesn’t try for taking prisoners anymore.

Cap tends to use a gun almost as much as he uses his shield, which leads to a lot of dead enemy combatants.
