Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

What one considers cringe comedy is about as subjective as what you find funny to begin with. I have my own standards for cringe comedy, and Thor 3 did not meet them.

I don't know why y'all are arguing with Unknowing.

I agree about situational humour. It's more satisfying to me to see characters react to stupid, than be stupid.

I mean I agree the humor in Civil War was pretty good. I heavily disagree that the humor in Thor: Ragnarok counts as cringe.

I don't think I've found any of the humor in these films particularly cringey.

But then, I have a pretty diverse range of humor.

Edit: Except maybe Banner falling into Widow's breasts early in AOU. That was pretty silly and just there to push that romance.

Maybe is why I dont like him: it feel is just jeff goldblum being him rather than a chararter, kinda like how robert jr start just acting himself in Iron man 2 rather than Tony stark.

Overall, this is why I like and dont like of Ragnarok:

-I really enjoy Thor fight with Sultur, I find him eactly what I expect: awsome, brutal and somewhat cocky.

-But I the same time I didnt really like the final fight, overall mook fighting does nothing for me but show how cool the hero are and while Thor power was awsome, I just come to me as nordic version of Raiden from mortal kombat.

-Valkyrie....just....damn, people were right, she STOLE the show, if someone should replace Thor is her.

-The movie finally confirm what everyone kinda suspect of Odin having a shady past and being quite ruthless in the past, of course he dies before that and any meanifull confrontation stop mattering because of that.

-I have mixed vibes for the imperalism motivation, is good but for some reason Hela remind me of some old iron age conqueror like shao khan rather a "Modern" imperalism should be, usually Imperalist choke themselves with jargon, holiest than you behivor while Hela is just "im awfull and proud of it" which come as little bit to cartoonish for me.

-Saakar: I remenber when media pushover critic actually guess the used of Saakar in the movie and other troopers said it would be stupid since it would cut Hulk best arc for a Thor one.....in turn out they were right to said that.

-The three amigos: I know they were useless but having them die so pointless come as disrespecting, also where is Sif?.

-So they finally manage to tone down loki which is good, on the other hand I feel he have being forgiven quite easly, specially banner since Loki use him.

-I kinda like Hela, so far they did a good job of not shitting her like every other villian for the sake of humor or a joke, that is a good start.

So my veredict is....better than thor 2 I guess.

I still think it's bullshit that Valkyrie was never actually named in the fucking movie. And she only exists because Waititi couldn't wrap his brain around a female character being "worth" Thor or being able to challenge him as a character despite not being a physical match for him.

They didn't refer to her as anything other than "The Valkyrie". Which yeah, I can kind of empathize that it was weird they never actually named her, but I really could not care much about that complaint.

The attack towards Waititi though, I don't understand that and have never heard him say anything about that.

Not like he had a say in that, Portman left of her own accord after the bullshit production of Thor: The Dark World.

Loki being easily forgiven is something I could look past because Thor preempts the inevitable backstab this time and accuses Loki of being a static character

So Loki proves him wrong out of spite

(Also based on the snake story their whole history has been based on Loki being easily forgiven by Thor)

“We wanted Thor to encounter somebody that was near his equal and that his relationship with Jane may have evolved in unexpected ways in between The Dark World and Ragnarok and we wanted to pit him against a character who was much more his equal and in many ways his superior. Valkyrie is trying to not embrace any sort of Asgardian heritage that she has. Thor thinks maybe that will create a bond between them and, on the contrary, she wants to forget it all entirely.”

...yeah, I can see this as being a bit iffy to describe Valkyrie in comparison with Jane.

[up]And yet it is a add qway to describe it, Jane was pretty much the mary jane of Thor peter: the muggle love who never past of asking what the super special men is doing.

sad but true.

Also a little here wild mass guessthe stonemason in Agent of Shield is in fact the father of Skorne in the movie, he left him when he wsa a boy and he that create him the idea of proving himself to asgardwild mass guess

I dont know, I just like that chararter, shame he die.

I mean, just because Jane didn't have superpowers doesn't mean she couldn't be Thor's equal in some way. I believe that's the part Sharknado was taking issue with here.

Agreed. Jane was mortal, but brilliant. Casting her as less than Thor’s equal isn’t accurate and is kinda sexist (only warrior women are equal?)
